AGploration Teen Training!

land Extension’s AGsploration: The Science of Maryland Agricul-ture curriculum at our Winter In-stitute on Saturday, February 18, 2012 through Monday, February 20, 2012 at the Patuxent River 4-H Center in Upper Marlboro. As a team member, your commit-ment is to fill out an application and evaluation consent form which can be found at www.maryland4h.org, attend the AGsploration team training in

February, and make a 30-hour commitment teaching and evaluating the AGsploration curriculum. Completed applica-tions are due by January 9, 2012 to April Hall Barczewski at UME-Cecil County, 200 Chesa-peake Blvd, Suite 1500, Elkton, MD 21921. The AGsploration program is limited to 30 participants. Applicants will be accepted by a review process and we encourage at least one

youth from every 4-H unit to apply.

Are you interested in production agriculture, health and/or environ-mental issues as they relate to Maryland agriculture? Do you enjoy teaching others? Are you interested in meeting other 4-Hers from around

the state? If so, then the AGsploration Winter Institute might be for you. The AG-sploration development team invites 4-H youth ages 14-18 or 4-H alumni ages 19-21 to become trained as a teen teacher for University of Mary-

Winter is a great time to be active! There are

plenty of fun things to do out in the snow that are

beneficial to your health. Did you know you could

burn 285 calories an hour building a snowman and

319 calories an hour having a snowball fight? Even

sledding or making snow angels gets you up and

moving instead of cooped up indoors. And once you’re

done in the snow, go inside and try this treat to

warm you up again. Its quick, easy to make, and is healthy too!

Hot Mulled Cider! What you need:

2 cups of Apple Cider

2 Cinnamon Sticks

1 Clove

1 Tart Apple, cored and sliced

Bring the cider, cinnamon sticks, and clove

to a simmer over medium heat in a small sauce pot. Let the mixture simmer

for about 3 minutes.. Pour into 2 mugs and add the sliced apples. Have your

child carefully garnish each mug with a cinnamon stick.

Activity of the Month: Screaming Vikings!

Instructions:

Begin in a circle with one person in the middle. The goal of the game is not be in the middle at the end The person in the middle

points at a person seated in the circle and then screams, “Screaming Viking! (or one of the other formations described below).

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten!” While the person is counting, the person who was selected and the peo-

ple directly to the left and right must form a formation, described below. Feel free to make up more fun formations to try out

with your group!

If any of the three people (the person selected and the people to the left and right of that person) do not correctly respond in

time then whoever messes up must go into the middle. The appropriate responses can be one of the following:

1. Screaming Viking: each person to the left and right of the selected person must make a rowing motion outwardly to the sides,

while the person in the middle must place his or her fingers to the sides of his/her head with index finger pointed upwards, like

horns. All three people must scream loudly.

2. Smurfs: the 3 of them interlock arms and sing the smurf song, “La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.”

3. Chia Pet: the three of them must act as a growing chia pet with hands lifting upwards. The 3 of them must shoud, “Ch-ch-ch-

chia…”

4. Jello: the person in the center wobbles like jello, while each person to the side holds their arms out, forming a bowl. You can

make up other appropriate responses — the sillier the better! The more enthusiastic and wacky you are, the more entertaining
