Dynamic and well-functioning leadership is so important to a vibrant 4-H community. Participation in the Sacramento County 4-H Council indicates that this governing body is long overdue for a tune-up. So, it’s time for a change… and not a tune-up, but an over-haul. Council meetings are marked by limited attendance, difficulty in recruiting officers, and an uncertainty around authority and purpose. Often times the Council’s work is on administrative and management issues—budget, bylaws, and the likewith little emphasis on planning and program development. And its focus is generally on 4-H clubs and not the entire 4-H program. Perhaps most importantly, young people do not often enthusiastically participate. Our 4-H program deserves a leadership structure that is engaging and empowering, one that supports leaders to envision our program’s future, and set a path forward. Both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara 4-H communities have inspiring stories of new leadership and management structures that have transformed their organizations. Staff and volunteers report new events and programs, increased membership, a rise in volunteers, greater community involvement, and an increase in revenue. And they report that energythat hard to measure intangibleis abundant. Sacramento County will convene a 4-H Futures Task Force to set in place a new, similar leadership structure. Dynamic and well-functioning leadership is so important to a vibrant 4-H community. Participation in the Sacramento County 4-H Council indicates that this governing body is long overdue for a tune-up. So, it’s time for a change…and not a tune-up, but an over-haul. Council meetings are marked by limited attendance, difficulty in recruiting officers, and an uncertainty around authority and purpose. Often times the Council’s work is on administrative and management issues—budget, bylaws, and the like—with little emphasis on planning and program development. And they report that energy—that hard to measure intangible—is abundant. Sacramento County will convene a 4-H Futures Task Force to set in place a new, similar leadership structure. We see the rebuilding of our leadership team as an opportunity to:

Revitalize or expand the use of adult volunteers and young people as program managers

Develop an integrated and coordinated program delivery model

Attract new high-performing volunteers to 4-H

Engage more youth as equal partners in 4-H program development, management, and evaluation

Expand 4-H’s reach to touch the lives of more young people

Vision all that 4-H can be in our community, and to create a plan to make it happen.

Our first 4-H Futures Task Force meeting will take place in January, and our work will be completed by May. Know that we’re moving forward, and in a very positive direction.

Hello Sacramento County!

This is your 2012-2013 4-H All Star Rachel Ricchiuto.

The deadline to apply for 2013-2014 4-H All Star is February 28, which will be here soon! Now’s the time to find out how you can be part of the 2013 – 2014 4-H All Star team. Please contact me to arrange a time for me to visit your club. My email is [email protected] The North Central Sectional Council met at the Sacramento County 4-H Office on November 17th. Seven counties were represented at the meeting. CAL Conference had a very successful planning meeting, so all of you attending that conference prepare to be amazed! Two youth chairs volunteered to plan and host the 2013 Citizenship Weekend. Consumer Science Field Day which was held on November 3rd was a success. Santa Clara County will be hosting the 2013 Sectional Presentation Day. The date is March 30th 2013, so put it on your calendars! Presentation Day. Just a heads up that County Presentation Day, which usually takes place in February, is coming up. If you would like to give a presentation this is the time to start preparing. If you need ideas for topics, talk to your project leaders about the different topics and types of presentations that you could do for that project. Here is the link to the State Presentation Manual http://www.ca4h.org/files/2193.pdf. In the manual you can find tips about presenting, how to make visuals to go with your presentation, and descriptions of all of the various types of 4-H presentations. I would like to see a lot of 4-H’ers present at our County Presentation Day, so if you haven’t already, start thinking about what you would like to present! Hi 4-H Events are fun social events for High School aged 4-H’ers and their friends. Put these dates on your calendar and come join me for some fun activities!

Advanced Mountain Horse Camp

is a 2012 Golden Clover Award Winner Congratulations to the Advanced Mountain Horse Camp program. They were nominated for a Golden Clover Award in the Group Category for Outreach & Collaboration. Sponsored by the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation. This category is awarded to a group for increased public awareness of the 4-H Youth Development Program, involving new youth and adults in 4-H, reaching out to communities that have historically not benefited from 4-H, and creating partnerships with other youth development organizations. Thank you to the dedicated volunteers that put on the Camp each summer, including Shawn & Shelly Hutchinson, Dave & Peggy Grooms, and Alan & Robbie Edwards.

Congratulations!

4-H On The Wild Side

recognized as a National 4-H Program of Distinction

In Sacramento County, our 4-H program has an outdoor educational camp that has been recognized as a National 4-H Program of Distinction. 4-H On the Wild Side aims to enthuse and educate elementary school children about nature and the outdoors, and encourage community involvement and leadership skills in teenagers. It is both a service learning experience for teens who plan and lead the program, and an environmental education experience for elementary school-age participants. Over several months, teen staff work in partnership with adult volunteers to orchestrate and deliver weekend camp programs to 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students attending schools in low-income neighborhoods. Teens receive training in environmental curricula and in teaching inquiry-based science, then design and deliver two weekend programs. Up to eighty children attend each session, rotating through the teen-led activities to learn about ecosystems, migration, habitat, and other environmental lessons. Since 2000, over 1,500 youth have participated. Annual evaluations reveal consistent outcomes for the program including significant knowledge gain for participants, growth in leadership skills for teen presenters, and a sense of community contribution.
