Donald warns on capacityCarnival Corporation ceo

Arnold Donald has expressed concern over the sheer volume of new capacity to come onto the market in coming years, warning it could lead to restricted growth.

Speaking to media recently, Donald said the wave of new and increasingly larger ships on order was turning into a worrying trend which could limit yield growth as lines are forced to aggressively compete for passenger markets.

“In an ideal world, you wish it wasn’t happening,” he said.

Donald’s comments come just days after MSC Cruises doubled its order of vessels with capacity of 5,000 passengers plus, from two vessels to four.

Royal Caribbean recently signed an order for its fourth Oasis-class ship, while Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Lines, P&O Cruises World Cruising and Carnival Cruise Lines itself will all take delivery of at least one new ship in the next four years.

The Carnival boss said while he didn’t expect ticket prices to rise much for the foreseeable future, employing best practices to bring expenses down while increasing onboard revenue was part of

Carnival’s own “sound” strategy.“The reality is the only way

you’re going to grow is onboard revenue and ticket yield.

“But we need to have demand be much higher [and] that is a challenge,” Donald continued.

He warned that “super aggressive” pricing tactics devised to fill ships could become an industry-wide problem if it begins.

“People say, ‘I’m not going to go on that ship, but cruises only cost this much, and I don’t want to pay more than that because I don’t want to get ripped off’.”

However, Donald said all of the new capacity did have an upside, with cruising now firmly in the limelight, generating media hype.

Packed with news Today’s issue of TD Cruise Update features three pages of all the latest cruise information from Australia and worldwide.

MSC restructures pricinglaunCHing its first 18-month

brochure later this week, MSC Cruises will unveil ‘experience’ pricing categories, each catering to a different type of holiday.

The four experiences - ‘Bella’, ‘Fantastica’, ‘Aurea’, and ‘MSC Yacht Club’ - take their names from cabin categories on MSC ships.

Lynne Clarke, managing director of MSC Cruises Australia and New Zealand, said clients would be able to “personalise their holiday even further” by selecting one of the four experiences.

“We really want to give travellers even more choices regarding their cruises, so that’s where our experience pricing comes in,” she said.

Due to be released online on 05 Jun, the new brochure, covering Oct 2014 to Apr 2016, will also include earlybird savings from $200pp up to $500pp when combining two cruises.

“We urge people to start planning and booking from now considering this remarkable early bird sale will end 31 Aug 2014,” Clarke said.

MSC is sending a ship to Australia for the first time next year, with “overwhelming” sales reported for the 33-night Grand voyage from Dubai to

Sydney aboard MSC Orchestra.For MSC’s 2015 and early 2016

rates, see www.msccruises.com.au at the end of this week.

Tourist Office.

The Austrian National Tourist Office is hosting a group of travel agents in Vienna this week in the lead-up to tomorrow’s launch of the new Avalon Illumination.

Avalon’s latest “Suite Ship” will debut with Deborah Hutton as Godmother before its three day inaugural cruise to Budapest.

With Vienna being such a key destination on the Danube River, Austrian Tourism has taken the opportunity to showcase the destination with a wide variety of activities over the last few days.

The participants have enjoyed cycle tours, cooking classes, concert and opera performances, horse-drawn carriage rides, walking the city streets and tours of some of the museums.

Austria’s rich culinary scene has also been explored, and a highlight of the trip tomorrow will be an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the famous Spanish Riding School before boarding the ship.

Fiji Princess relaunchBlue Lagoon Cruises has

resumed operations of its three, four & seven night Yasawa Island cruises on the newly renovated and refurbished Fiji Princess.

Adopting a nautically inspired colour scheme, the refreshed vessel now boasts the result of $1.2m of work, with furniture and cabin amenities upgraded.

Chief executive officer Peter Duncan said it was high time the ship had a rest and a makeover.

“This refurbishment has been a long time in the planning, and is a major investment by Blue Lagoon Cruises not only into our vessel and product offering, but will also raise the bar of cruising experiences available in Fiji.

“Blue Lagoon Cruises has recently come under our management and we have made several changes based on guest feedback including brand new itineraries with a maximum of four hours cruising each day, more activities and a more personal experience of the Fijian culture,” Duncan added.

The company recently kicked off an intensive trade relaunch at the recent Fiji Tourism Exchange trade show in Denarau.

underdOgs unfortunately don’t always win, as evidenced late last month by rebellious Kiwi shack builder Paul Jepson.

The anti-authoritative builder was featured in this column in Apr (CU 29 Apr) for his rustic shack built smack-bang in the middle of Nelson Harbour which was proving a headache for local fishing and cruise vessels.

A court order to remove the illegal dwelling expired without action, seeing the Environment Court authorities in to remove the structure by towing it to land and dismantling it.

Its owner/occupant Jepson was nowhere to be found when the authorities moved in.

The shack was fitted with a rainwater collection system, personal stove and a bed, but no plumbing, using wooden pallets and corrugated iron.

Supporters of Jepson said he just wanted to live peacefully, albeit with a fantastic view.

Aussies among the first on Jade

Originally launched for the first time only weeks ago, Scenic Tours recently welcomed this group of Aussie agents aboard its brand new Scenic Jade for a taste of the wonders of life onboard.

The group of 26 travelled along the Rhine from Nuremberg to Amsterdam, enjoying one week of the 15-day ‘Jewels of Europe’ cruise itinerary.

The group stopped at Bamberg, Würzburg, Wertheim, Rüdesheim and Cologne before disembarking in Amsterdam.

Along the way, the group partook in an excursion on the Romantic Road to the town of Rothenberg and mingled with the residents of Freudenberg in an experience inclusive of a medieval feast at Marksburg Castle.

Scenic Tours inclusions such as private butler service, onboard electronically-assisted bicycles for hire and the GPS guided touring system Scenic Tailormade were also tried, tested and enjoyed.

When leaving the ship in the Dutch capital, the agents also took in a tour to the windmills of Zaanse Schans, capped off with

an Italian dinner at Portobellos.pictured above onboard Scenic
