Welcome Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to our new year and all that it promises here at Sacred Heart, Highgate for 2017, in this our very special 120th Anniversary Year. At Assembly this morning, we began as always, with our school song with the children, and we focused on the work of the Sisters and Bishop Gibney. We concluded with our final verse, noting that this is the work of us all The firm foundation that was laid, Continues now today, as we live out our faith. Moving forward now with pride, to do our best we strive, With Jesus as our guide. These wonderful words, have led us to determine that 2017 is the year in which we will Strive for Excellence at Sacred Heart. This is the first of our school’s fortnightly newsletters, after what I’m sure has been a chance for families to enjoy a wonderful Summer break, enjoy plenty of rest and the opportunity to recreate together! On behalf of all our teachers and staff, I extend a very warm welcome to you all and a special hello to our new children and their families who have joined Sacred Heart this year. This year we welcome the following new staff members to our school Miss Stephanie Ryan to both the Year Five classroom and the Music Specialist role and Mrs Rosie Stewart and Mrs Lisa Grazia asSpecial Needs Education Assistants I am sure that our School Community will make all our new and returning staff members feel athome and supported in their roles Our teachers have settled smoothly into routines planning and timetables after their holiday break and are delighted with theenthusiasm of their classes as everyone tackles their studies In addition to my welcome accompanying todayrsquos Newsletter is amessage from Archbishop Timothy Costelloe

Learning Learning from our experiencesNext week we conduct the 2017 Parent Information Sessions on Wednesday 8th February These sessions are planned as anopportunity to inform parents about curriculum content classroom rules and routines homework expectations etc Our Teachers haveprepared comprehensive handouts and presentations and if parents are not able to attend information packs will be sent homeOnce again we will call for an evaluation and feedback form for parents to complete shy thank you in anticipation of this and we willspend some time as a staff collating and identifying how we can improve or enhance these sessionsshy it has already been suggestedto us that a school map would be useful to all new parents who may not be aware of the school layout Thank you for yourcontributions to ensuring we are meeting everyonersquos needs Additionally we have requested of the Parents and Friends Associationa flyer with information about this yearrsquos planned events School Banking (on Wednesdays this year) and the rewards relationshipsthat our Association have with local businesses that benefit Sacred Heart families The coming weeks are important as a data collection period and once assessments and standardised tests are completed teachersare able to plan for both enrichment opportunities and the necessary intervention strategies As always preparation for any testingsituation begins with adequate restshy these first weeks at school can be very tiring and combined with warm weather really can affectour boys and girlsshy early nights are called forAll good work is grounded in good communication and I urge parents to always makecontact with their childrsquos teacher if they have queries regarding their childrsquos learning and progress The expected warm weather that usually accompanies February will see our school provide adequately for the childrenrsquos learning intheir air conditioned classrooms and their break times will see the Hall and its air conditioning being utilised Please donrsquot forget tofreeze water bottles and send along fruit for the afternoonrsquos Crunch and Sip break

Engagement The promotion of positive relationships with our studentsstaffparents

I value and appreciate the building of strong and positive relationships with all our community It is so vital in a Catholic School that wecommunicate with each other through the eyes of understanding and compassion ndash our attitude each day will be a model of reflectionto our students parents and to our communityI have been very impressed with the level of engagement that our students havealready demonstrated in these early days

I look forward to our special Blessing and Commissioning of our senior students at next Wednesdayrsquos Mass I was able to chat withour senior students this week to outline some of the opportunities that they will experience this year including Camp in Week Threeand what we expect of them this year as leaders and role models within our school

On Sunday 26th February the first of many pleasant gatherings that will be hosted by the Parents and Friends Association this yearwill be the Family Sausage Sizzle and Picnic on the School Oval I look forward to seeing many of you there Thank you to all who areassisting in preparation for this eventshy it is sure to be a lovely way to begin our year More details to follow soon

Accountability Taking responsibility for the quality of our work

Accompanying this weekrsquos Newsletter is information regarding timetables and the Term Planner shy these can become the importantfridge details Please read these carefully and hopefully the next weeks should run fairly smoothly

This year Sports Uniforms on Friday will see our students wear their white Sacred Heart sports shirts and their coloured Factionsports shirts are to be worn on Mondays or Tuesdays at their Physical Education lessons with Mrs Alderman Next week all parentswill receive the printout of their childrsquos confidential details that are currently on our Administration system Please read these formscarefully and make any necessary changes and updates and return these forms to the School Office promptly in order for records tobe updated

Discipleship Living out the teachings of Jesus

In the realm of discipleship I have witnessed a genuine spirit of generosity within our school community As we strive to lead byexample and follow the call of Jesusrsquo service to others we unknowingly have a profound effect on others I would also like toacknowledge the hard work and preparation that you our parents and guardians have accomplished over the summer break Thelove and care that you have shown for your children helps them to show love and concern for their friends and family Thank you forfulfilling your vocation as a parent and guardian This has such a positive influence on our boys and girls

We commence the 2017 School Year with our Opening Whole School Mass next Wednesday at 900am We will be ably led by ourYear Six class Thank you to Miss Barker and our other staff for their work in preparing the children for this special liturgyOur studentleaders will be blessed and commissioned to their duties at this Mass and we encourage and welcome our parents and families tojoin us for this special occasionOur staff will also be blessed and commissioned to their ldquovocation or callingrdquo to work in a CatholicSchoolFather Irek Czech continues in his role as Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Highgate this year Father eagerly awaits hisinvolvement in all our activities at school this year

In closing can I call for prayers for all families within our school community who may need them and can I wish everyone well for theweekend and thank you all for your hard work in getting the children back to school so well prepared and fully equipped Enjoy nextweek

Engaging Hearts and Minds is back in 2017

The staff at Sacred Heart Primary School are committed to enhancing our students social skills again this yearThe second half of the 2016 school year was a busy and exciting time in regards to our work in this area As aresult of some action research carried out with staff by one of our Assistant Principals Carolyn Perlini a SocialSkills Committee has been formed This committee worked tirelessly last year to suggest ways to improve thesocial skills of our students enhance the current wholeshyschool social skills program and overall raise the profile ofthe social skills program this year We look forward to sharing our journey with you this year Please find belowour schools focus social skills for Term 1

Uniform Focus

At Sacred Heart we wish for the students to take great pride in the way that they present themselves in the schooluniform For the duration of Term 1 we would like to have a Uniform focus for the students each week to ensureconsistency in correct uniform Next week we are focussing on students wearing the correct footwear to schoolA reminder that black sneakers should only be worn on sports days Black laceshyup school shoes or brown schoolsandals should be worn with the everyday uniform The uniform policy can be accessed on the school website httpwebshpshwaeduaupdfpoliciespolicies_uniformspdf

Please note that if your child is dressed in the incorrect school uniform and does not have an accompanying note

explaining this staff will bring this to your attention with a uniform notice We thank you for your coshyoperation withthis matter

School DriveshyThrough Safety (Please note all school gates open at 250pm)

As we begin this new school year it seems appropriate to review school DriveshyThrough Safety forleaving school At the end of the school day students may be excited distracted and tired and maynot concentrate on road safety Given their young age students may also be unable to predict oridentify dangers and tend to act impulsively We ask that parents picking up their children to pleasecarefully supervise them and discuss the importance of road awareness We encourage parents totalk with their children about safe behaviour on the footpath ndash it is not a safe place to play or run Weask you to please include discussion on the dangers of vehicles that may be entering or exiting schooldriveways and teach them how to stop and check for vehicles before crossing

Until your child is at least eight years old please hold their hand

bull on the footpath leaving the school grounds

bull in the car park and

bull when crossing the road

Up until at least 10 years old it is necessary to supervise your child very closely holding their handwhen crossing the road

Talk with your children about Stop Look Listen and Think every time they cross the road leavingschool

STOP one step back from the kerb LOOK for traffic to your right left and

right again

LISTEN for the sounds of approaching traffic

THINK whether it is safe to cross

Swimming training will commence next MONDAY 6TH FEBRUARY at 315pm ndash 4pm sharp I have employed our coach Andy Mueller to help our children in Years 3 shy 6 to improve their technique and become efficient atswimming 50 metres This session is for children who are interested in performing to the best of their ability and becoming a member of our InterschoolTeam It is NOT for beginning swimmers and children in our Junior years The school has paid for the lane hire but each child will need to pay an entry fee I look forward to seeing you at the pool

THE SCHOOL CARNIVAL IS T0 BE HELD AT BEATTY PARK shy THURSDAY 23RD FEBRUARY

We commence the 2017 School Year with our Opening Whole School Mass next Wednesday at 900am We will be ably led by ourYear Six class Thank you to Miss Barker and our other staff for their work in preparing the children for this special liturgyOur studentleaders will be blessed and commissioned to their duties at this Mass and we encourage and welcome our parents and families tojoin us for this special occasionOur staff will also be blessed and commissioned to their ldquovocation or callingrdquo to work in a CatholicSchoolFather Irek Czech continues in his role as Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Highgate this year Father eagerly awaits hisinvolvement in all our activities at school this year

Swimming training will commence next MONDAY 6TH FEBRUARY at 315pm ndash 4pm sharp I have employed our coach Andy Mueller to help our children in Years 3 shy 6 to improve their technique and become efficient atswimming 50 metres This session is for children who are interested in performing to the best of their ability and becoming a member of our InterschoolTeam It is NOT for beginning swimmers and children in our Junior years The school has paid for the lane hire but each child will need to pay an entry fee I look forward to seeing you at the pool

School DriveshyThrough Safety (Please note all school gates open at 250pm)

As we begin this new school year it seems appropriate to review school DriveshyThrough Safety forleaving school At the end of the school day students may be excited distracted and tired and maynot concentrate on road safety Given their young age students may also be unable to predict oridentify dangers and tend to act impulsively We ask that parents picking up their children to pleasecarefully supervise them and discuss the importance of road awareness We encourage parents totalk with their children about safe behaviour on the footpath ndash it is not a safe place to play or run Weask you to please include discussion on the dangers of vehicles that may be entering or exiting schooldriveways and teach them how to stop and check for vehicles before crossing

Until your child is at least eight years old please hold their hand

bull on the footpath leaving the school grounds

bull in the car park and

bull when crossing the road

Up until at least 10 years old it is necessary to supervise your child very closely holding their handwhen crossing the road

Talk with your children about Stop Look Listen and Think every time they cross the road leavingschool

STOP one step back from the kerb LOOK for traffic to your right left and

right again

LISTEN for the sounds of approaching traffic

THINK whether it is safe to cross

Swimming training will commence next MONDAY 6TH FEBRUARY at 315pm ndash 4pm sharp I have employed our coach Andy Mueller to help our children in Years 3 shy 6 to improve their technique and become efficient atswimming 50 metres This session is for children who are interested in performing to the best of their ability and becoming a member of our InterschoolTeam It is NOT for beginning swimmers and children in our Junior years The school has paid for the lane hire but each child will need to pay an entry fee I look forward to seeing you at the pool

THE SCHOOL CARNIVAL IS T0 BE HELD AT BEATTY PARK shy THURSDAY 23RD FEBRUARY

COMMENCES AT 930AM AND CONCLUDES BY 1230PM A NOTE REGARDING THIS SCHOOL EVENT WILL BE SENT HOME NEXT WEEK

PARENT HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED A SHEET HAS BEEN PLACED ON THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION NOTICEBOARD NEARTHE CANTEEN THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT Mrs Stephanie Alderman Physical Education Teacher
