Do your work

Handwriting * Program- Handwriting Without Tears * Duration- Cursive all year/3 to 4 times a week * Second semester - everything must be written in cursive!

Vocabulary •  WordMasters- learn 25 words •  two times a year

•  Analogies- using vocabulary words in analogies

Learn 10 different types of analogies

Spelling * Focus on a spelling pattern each week Monday- Pre-test (take-home list will come home with tic-tac-toe sheet!) Tuesday- What’s the rule? Word pattern sort. Wednesday- Poems, sorts, and sentences that incorporates word patterns and practices words. Friday-Post-test (Tic- Tac- Toe sheet due with parent signatures)

K-2 Learning to Read VS.

3-5 Reading to Learn

Reader’sworkshop * Daily-10/15 min. mini-lesson, 35/40 min. independent/reading response time, 5/10 minutes of partner share.. •  Skills- author’s purpose, cause/effect,

inferences, questioning, envisioning, predicting, theme, and main idea

Reader’s workshop * Conferring-meeting with your child one-on-one •  Strategy groups- small group instruction

based on skills they need to learn

•  Book clubs- kids working on the same book having discussion about the book

Writer’s workshop * Daily-10 min. mini-lesson, 25 min. writing time, 5 min. share * Skills- narrative writing, information writing, opinion writing, letter writing, poetry

* GUM – Grammar, Usage, Mechanics

Math workshop * Program- Investigations, Engage NY * Daily- 20 min whole group lesson, 30 min. independent work/workshop, 10 min. wrap-up and review * Skills- mastery of + and – skills, multiplication facts up to 10x10, intro to division facts, place value, data/graphs, fractions, geometry, measurement, estimation, time, money, area * Website for strategies!

Social studies/Science * Areas of Focus

Social studies- multicultural, colonial, pioneers, economics, civil rights

Science- light and sound, plants, food chains, environmental interactions

Take-home practice * Every night- Read for 20 minutes and

practice math facts (websites) * Take-home folder * Assignment Book - Oops! * Missing/late homework policy

How Can I help with homework?

•  Foster independence- homework should be

done by themselves •  If they are stuck- then help! •  Let me know! •  Don’t tell them how to spell it or where the

error is…point them in the right direction!
