The Purifica on of the Temple

Jesus was enraged at the thriving commerce going on around the Temple of Jerusalem. Any day, but more specially during the Sab-bath, the faithful would flock to the Temple. They come to offer animal sacrifices in the Temple. And so there was selling and buying of oxen, sheep and pigeons that were necessary for the Temple cult. There were priests who reject the offered animals because they were impure. And the people would, in turn, buy from the animal sellers around the Temple for exorbitant prices. Most o en, the priests would have share from the commercial exchange in the system of animal sacrifice.

Taxes were collected from the people for the support of the Temple, its priests and the religious authori es that managed it. Taxes were paid with coins that are not bearing effigies. For this reason, people exchanged their Roman money to Tyrian money. And so there were money changers. Spaces around the Temple were also u lized for the commercial exchange. And the Temple itself de-rived huge amounts of money from the rent.

There was nothing new in the system that was taking place in the Temple. It had been going on for genera ons, known by many. But no one confronted it un l Jesus came along. He condemned the commerce that arise from the devo on of people in the Temple, reminding everyone that the Temple is a house of God. More than that, he confronted the authori es in the Temple who tolerated this system to thrive. In effect, Jesus signed his death warrant when he cast commerce out of the temple.

When money creeps in, it tends to take over. Churches, Basilicas, Shrines and other places of worship a ract commerce because of the heavy foot traffic generated by the arrival of the faithful. The faithful have needs and business ou its and the enterprising peo-ple cater to them. Chris an sacraments, on the other hand, are not le untouched by commercialism. Christening par es, First Com-munion money, Confirma on discos, wedding feast—all these can also be tarnished by buying and selling.

There is a very thin line that demarcates temples, churches, basilicas, shrines, and houses of worships from the oikos emporiou, or marketplace. The awareness of this fact would provide the horizon for mindfulness. For what the Lord Jesus wants is for the house of worship not to degenerate into a marketplace. For him, the house of worship is not merely a building where people gather (to hi-eron); it is a house of the Father. Zeal for the house of his Father consumed Jesus.

Our bodies can also be the presence of the Divine. And our bodies can also be the site for the marketplace the way we pamper them with the products of the emporium, or the market. Our communion with God necessitates the presence of our bodies in all their totality. From me to me, it is helpful to go the way of Jesus when he “purified” the Temple of his Father in rela on to the purifica-

on of our bodies. That we are meant for God, whole and en re. And that our bodies can be the temple of the Holy Spirit immanent in our daily lives.
