Jesus Healed a Paralyzed Man MARK 2:1-12

People came from everywhere to see Jesus . When the news spread that He was in Capernaum, they hurried to the house where He was speaking . So many people crowded into the house to hear Jesus teach, there was no more room—not even in the doorway!

The large crowd did not keep four men from Jesus . Their friend could not walk, so the men carried him on a mat . Since there was no way to go through the doorway, they gently carried their friend to the roof of the house . They dug through the roof until they made an opening . Then carefully, they lowered the mat with their friend to Jesus .

Jesus saw that the men had great faith in Him . He looked at the man on the mat and said, “Your sins are forgiven .”

Some of the scribes (teachers of the law) were upset by what Jesus had said . They thought, Why did Jesus say that? Only God can forgive sins!

Right away, Jesus knew what the scribes were thinking . He said, “Why are you thinking those things? Is it easier for Me to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?”

Jesus showed His power on earth to forgive sins . He turned back to the man on the mat and said, “Get up, pick up your mat, and go home .”

Immediately, the man stood up! He picked up his mat and walked out of the house in front of everyone . The people were amazed! They praised God and said, “We have never seen anything like this!”

A heatwave in California once sent temperatures

soaring to 109 degrees Fahrenheit and turned grapes on the vines

into raisins .

At 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, lightning is

five times hotter than the sun’s surface .

The coldest temperature was recorded

in Antarctica when temperatures fell below

—135 degrees Fahrenheit!

A storm in Texas once produced hail as large as softballs .

Every minute, one billion tons of rain falls on the earth .

A windstorm inside a professional football

stadium was so strong it tilted the goal posts .

Jesus told the storm to calm, and it did! Jesus’ power can quiet the “storms” in your life, too . As you color the picture, pray and ask Jesus to calm any worries or fears you have .

Jesus and the disciples were sailing on the Sea of Galilee. It lies 680 feet below sea level. Hills and mountains surround the small sea. When the cool, dry air from the mountains collides with the warm, moist air of the sea, strong winds often cause violent storms that arise quickly and without warning.

Jesus Calmed the Storm MARK 4:35-41

A large crowd of people stood on shore and listened to Jesus teach while He sat in a boat . (Mark 4:1) That evening, Jesus told His disciples, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea .” Jesus was already in the boat, so they sailed away from the crowd .

Before the boat reached the other shore, a fierce storm pounded the boat . Waves rolled and crashed over the sides of the rocking boat .

Where was Jesus? In the back of the boat, sleeping on a pillow! The disciples were scared! They woke Jesus and said, “Teacher!

Don’t You care that we are going to die?”Jesus got up and spoke sharply to the roaring wind and violent sea .

“Peace! Be still!” The wind stopped . The waves dropped . The sea was still and calm .

Looking at His disciples, Jesus asked, “Why are you afraid? How is it that you have no faith?”

The disciples were in awe of Jesus . “Who is this?” they asked one another . “He commands the wind and the sea, and they obey Him!”

BIG LOVE

SHOWING LOVE

Ever wondered what happened to Nicodemus after his visit with

Jesus? The Bible gives us some clues later in the Book

Nicodemus Visited JesusJOHN 3:1-21

Nicodemus was a Pharisee—an important Jewish religious leader . He studied and taught God’s law, and he tried very hard to obey the law . Nicodemus knew there was something different about Jesus . Jesus’ teachings were new to Nicodemus, and Nicodemus wanted to learn more .

One evening Nicodemus visited Jesus and said, “We know You are a teacher sent from God . No one could do the miracles You do without God’s power .”

Jesus said something that confused Nicodemus: “A person cannot see the kingdom of God unless he is born again .”

“How can anyone be born a second time?” wondered Nicodemus . “Can he return to his mother’s body to be born again?”

Jesus explained that the Holy Spirit helps a person begin a new life of faith in God . “Do not be amazed that I said you must be born again,” Jesus said .

Jesus continued to teach Nicodemus: “God loved the world so much He gave His One and only Son so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life .” Jesus explained to Nicodemus that God did not send His Son into the world to judge and punish the world . God sent His Son so that the world would be saved through Him .

Jesus Promised the Holy Spirit JOHN 14:15-26

On the night before Jesus was crucified, He ate a Passover meal with His disciples . (John 13) At the meal, Jesus encouraged them not to be troubled (John 14:1) and challenged them to be obedient .

“If you love Me,” Jesus said, “you will keep My commands .”

Jesus promised that when He was no longer with the disciples, God would send the Holy Spirit to help them . “I will ask the Father, and He will send you a Counselor to be with you forever,” Jesus said . “He is the Spirit of truth .”

Jesus told the disciples that this Helper, the Holy Spirit, would come to people who love Him and keep His commandments . People who do not love Jesus would not be able to know the Holy Spirit . Jesus said, “He will stay with you and will be in you . I will not leave you alone .”

Jesus continued: “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word . The one who doesn’t love Me will not keep My words . The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, will teach you and remind you of everything I have told you .”

God Created the World GENESIS 1:1–2:3

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth . The earth was dark, and it did not have any shape . On the first day God said, “Let there be light” and immediately, there was light . God called the light “day” and the dark “night .” God saw that the light was good .

On the second day God said, “Let the waters separate,” and the waters spread apart . God called the space in between the waters “sky .”

On the third day God said, “Let the waters under the sky gather together, and let dry land appear .” As soon as God spoke these words, it happened . God called the dry land “earth” and the waters “seas .” God saw that the earth and seas were good . Then God said, “Let the earth make plants and trees that have seeds .” There were plants and trees . And God saw that it was good .

On the fourth day God said, “Let there be lights in the sky to separate the day from the night .” It happened as God said . God made the sun to shine during the day and the moon and stars to shine at night . And God saw that it was good .

Then God said, “Let the water be filled with creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the sky .” Living creatures filled the seas and the sky . This was the fifth day, and God saw that it was good .

On the sixth day God said, “Let the earth be filled with all kinds of animals .” Livestock, creatures, and wildlife filled the earth, and God saw that it was good . Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image and according to Our likeness to rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature on the earth .” So God created man in His own image . He created a man and a woman . God saw all He had created, and He thought it was very good .

On the seventh day God had completed His work . God blessed the seventh day and said that it was holy . Then God rested .

Adam and Eve Sinned GENESIS 2:4-24; 3

When God created the earth, He made a garden called Eden . God made beautiful trees that were good for food . In the middle of the garden, God placed the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil . The man could eat from any tree in the garden, but God told him not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil . If the man ate from that tree, he would die .

God saw the man and said, “It is not good for you to be alone .” A deep sleep came over the man . While he slept, God took one of his ribs and used it to form woman . The man was Adam, and the woman was Eve .

One day a crafty serpent spoke to Eve . “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?”

Eve corrected the serpent . “We may eat fruit from any tree except the one in the middle of the garden . God said, ‘You must not touch or eat that fruit, or you will die .’ ”

The serpent disagreed . “You won’t die . God knows you will become like Him when you eat from that tree . You will know about good and evil .”

Eve looked at the fruit on the tree . She took some of the fruit and ate it . She gave some of the fruit to Adam . He ate it, too . Immediately, Adam and Eve realized what they had done . They tried to cover themselves and hide from God .

That evening God called to Adam, “Where are you?” Adam was hiding . God asked, “Did you eat from the tree I told you not to?”

Adam told God, “The woman You gave me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it .”

Eve said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate it .”God told the serpent, “You are cursed . You will move on your belly and

eat dust .” Then God told Eve, “You will have great pain when you have a baby .” God told Adam, “You must work hard to grow your food now, and one day you will die .” Then God made Adam and Eve leave the garden .

UNIT 2SESSION 3

Noah Built the Ark

Nehemiah 9:6 tells us that God created the heavens and all the stars . Look at this picture of the nighttime sky . Can you find the 8 pairs of matching stars and the one star that is not like any others? Draw lines to connect the matching pairs and circle the star that is different .

Find and read Nehemiah 9:6 in your Bible. What does the verse say that the stars do? Write the answer here.

It is good to remember that God is in charge of all creation . Has there ever been a time when you were afraid because of something that happened in the natural world? In the box below, write or draw about that time . Then stop and thank God for His power in keeping us safe, just as He kept Noah and his family safe .

It must have been noisy on the

ark! Have you ever wondered

how the animals slept? Animals have very unique

sleep patterns . For example, out of every 24 hours, a bat sleeps around 20 hours, usually hanging upside down . Giraffes sleep only about 30 minutes each night, for only about five minutes at a time . They sleep standing up but twist their necks so their heads rests on their bottoms–their favorite pillows!

Take your family on the ark . Take seven pairs of every clean animal and one pair of every unclean animal . Also, pack food for all of you .”

Noah obeyed God’s instructions . Two of each animal came to Noah and entered the ark, just as God had commanded . When Noah’s family and the animals were on the ark, God safely shut them in, and the rain began . Rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights . The earth was flooded, and water covered everything, even the tops of the highest mountains . For 150 days the floodwater rose higher and higher . After the flooding God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water began to go down .

Everyone inside the ark was safe . After the water went down, the ark landed safely on a mountain . Noah waited 40 days and then opened the window and sent out a raven . The raven flew back and forth until the waters dried up .

Then Noah sent out a dove, but she came back to the ark because she could not find a dry place to rest . After seven more days, Noah sent out the dove again . This time, she came back with an olive leaf in her beak . A week later, Noah sent out the dove again, and this time she did not return . The water that covered the earth had dried up .

God told Noah and his family to come out of the ark . Noah built an altar, and he and his family worshiped God . God promised that He would never again destroy every living thing on the earth with floodwaters . He placed a rainbow in the sky as a sign of His promise .

People Built a Tower GENESIS 11:1-9

All of the people on the earth traveled throughout the land, and they spoke the same language . When the people found a valley in Shinar (SHIGH-nahr), they liked it so much they decided to live there .

The people had an idea . “Let’s make oven-fired bricks and build a city . Let’s build a tall tower so that it touches the sky . The tower will make us famous! Otherwise, we will be scattered all over the earth .”

God came down to look over the city and the tower that the people were building . God said, “If they are doing this as one people who all speak the same language, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible .” God confused their language so they could not understand each other .

God scattered the people all over the earth, and they stopped building the tower . The city with the unfinished tower was called Babylon . It was at Babylon that God confused the language of the whole earth and scattered people throughout the earth .

God Sent Ten Plagues EXODUS 7:1–12:32

The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for over 400 years . God instructed Moses to tell Pharaoh (the king) to allow the Israelites to go into the wilderness and worship God . Pharaoh refused . He told the taskmasters to make the Israelites work even harder .

Many times, Moses told Pharaoh to let God’s people go . Each time, Pharaoh refused . Each time, God sent a plague on the people of Egypt . (The plagues were mighty works of God that showed His power .) God caused the water in Egypt to become blood . He caused frogs, lice (or gnats), and flies to cover the land . He caused the Egyptians’ cattle to die and boils to form on the skin of the Egyptians . He caused hail to fall from the sky and locusts to cover the land .

Then God brought a great darkness . For three days, the Egyptians could not see one another, but the Israelites had light . Still, Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go . Finally, God told Moses He would send the worst plague yet . The firstborn son of every Egyptian family would die . God gave Moses instructions for the Israelites to follow so that they would be safe . The Israelite families did as God instructed, and God protected them . In the Egyptian homes, however, the firstborn died—even Pharaoh’s son .

Pharaoh called for Moses and his brother, Aaron, in the night . “Leave my people and go!” Pharaoh ordered . “Take your families and your animals and leave!” The Israelites—600,000 men and their families—were finally free!

David Faced Goliath 1 SAMUEL 17:1-50

Nine feet, nine inches tall . Bronze armor weighing 125 pounds . With a brass helmet and a 15-pound point on his iron spear, Goliath, the terrifying champion of the Philistine army, stood across the valley from the Israelite army . Every day for 40 days Goliath shouted, “Send me a man so we can fight!” Not one Israelite stepped forward .

One day David’s father, Jesse, sent David to check on his older brothers who were in the Israelite army . Jesse sent grain, bread, and cheese with David to give to his brothers and the army commanders . When David arrived, he heard Goliath as he shouted his usual threat . He heard Goliath shout mean things about God . David asked, “Who is this Philistine who challenges the armies of the living God?”

David told Saul that he would fight Goliath and that God would keep him safe . David remembered that God helped him protect his father’s sheep from a bear and a lion . David knew that God would help him fight Goliath .

Saul offered his armor to David, but he was not used to wearing it . Instead, David chose five smooth stones from the river and put them in his pouch . He grabbed his sling and walked confidently toward Goliath . Goliath cursed David, but David was not scared . David said, “You come against me with weapons . I come against you in the name of the Lord whom you have dared! Everyone will know today that the battle is the Lord’s!”

Goliath rushed toward David . David skillfully placed a stone into the sling and slung it quickly, hitting Goliath’s forehead! The Philistine warrior fell facedown on the ground . God helped David beat Goliath, and the Philistines ran away .

A widow cried out to the prophet Elisha, “My husband has died . He owed a great deal of money . Now the person who lent my husband money wants to take my sons to pay the debt!”

Elisha asked, “What do you have in your house?”

“Just a little oil,” the widow replied .Elisha said, “Borrow empty jars from

your neighbors . Do not get a few—get many! Take the jars inside your house and shut the door . Pour your oil into all of the jars . Set the full containers over to the side .” The widow did exactly what Elisha told her to do .

After she borrowed the containers, the widow and her two sons went into her house and closed the door . When her sons brought her a jar, the woman filled it with oil and set it aside . Another jar, more oil!

Finally, she asked for another jar, and her son said, “There aren’t any more .” The oil had filled every container they had gathered, and then it stopped .

The widow found Elisha and told him about the miracle God had provided . “Go and sell the oil . Pay the debt with the money,” Elisha said . “You and your sons can live on the money that is left .”

Three Men Delivered from the Fiery Furnace DANIEL 3

King Nebuchadnezzar built a gold statue that was 90 feet high . When everyone came to see it, one of the king’s servants declared: “When you hear the sound of music, you must bow down and worship the statue . If you do not bow down and worship the statue, you will be thrown into a furnace of blazing fire .”

So when the people heard music, they bowed down and worshiped the statue . However, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not follow the orders .

Some men told King Nebuchadnezzar, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not bow down and worship the statue .” King Nebuchadnezzar was angry . He ordered the men to bow down and worship the statue .

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego said, “The God we serve can rescue us from the furnace, and He can rescue us from you . But, even if He does not rescue us, we will not bow down and worship the statue .”

King Nebuchadnezzar was very angry . He demanded that the furnace be set seven times hotter than before . He had Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego tied up and thrown into the furnace .

Suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up and said, “Didn’t we throw three men into the fire? I see four! The fourth man looks like a son of the gods .” Nebuchadnezzar went to the furnace and said, “Servants of the Most High God, come out!” Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walked out . They were not burned . They did not even smell like smoke!

God Judged Belshazzar DANIEL 5

After King Nebuchadnezzar died, Belshazzar became king . During a feast for many guests, Belshazzar demanded that the gold and silver cups Nebuchadnezzar had taken from God’s temple be brought to him . He and his guests drank from the vessels and praised their false gods .

Suddenly, the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and began writing on the wall . Belshazzar was scared! He called his wise men and offered them riches if they could read the writing, but no one could read it .

Daniel was brought before the king . The king offered Daniel the same rich rewards if he could tell him what the writing meant .

Daniel said, “You can keep your gifts, but I will read the writing and tell you what it means .” Daniel explained to Belshazzar how the previous king, Nebuchadnezzar, had started to think he was better than God . So God removed Nebuchadnezzar from his kingdom . Nebuchadnezzar lived in the wilderness and became like an animal until he confessed that God is ruler over all .

Daniel said that Belshazzar was proud and had praised gods that were not real . Belshazzar had not glorified God when he used the golden cups and bowls from the temple .

Then Daniel read the four words to Belshazzar: “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN (men-AY, men-AY, tek-AL, par-SIN) . MENE means that God has decided your kingdom will end . TEKEL means that you have been judged and found wanting . PARSIN means that your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians .”

That very night Belshazzar was killed, and Darius the Mede became king in his place .
