We are officially in season and music is exploding absolutely everywhere in this part of the world. I’ve seen dozens of great live music performances this past week and have a ton of shows on the horizon to tell you about. Let’s roll… Robert Keen, Robert Keen… Robert Earl Keen (Bandera, TX) played a sold out show at Brewster Street Ice House on May 17 th . Captain Chester, Vicki and I loaded up the van and crossed the creek in high style for this one. The last time I’d seen REK was with Chester and Vicki when he played his annual Christmas show at Brewster in 2010 and we were more than ready to see him again. To say the place was packed was an understatement. And it was one of those crowds that knew every word of every song and sang along to all of them. Keen didn’t really pull out anything new, relying mainly on his tried and true bag of tricks… but that was good enough. Tarpon Music Bash was a smashing success… Al Barlow (New Braunfels, TX) rolled into town with a couple dozen of his Hill Country friends last weekend for two great nights of non-stop music for the Third Annual Tarpon Music Bash at the Tarpon Ice House. Some of the highlights were sets by Michael Waid, Dallas Burrow & Music From the Karma Farm, Billy Snipes, Lucas Taylor, J.W. Brothers, Scott & Smiley, Alex Whitmore, The Cofield Brothers, Paul McLaughlin, Dan Brodhag, Jamie Smith, Tiffany Tuesday and Johnny Santos. On Saturday afternoon, the routine changed this year. Instead of trying to play continuously all day and night, the group headed to the beach for a bar-b-q. Then most of the players stuck around on Sunday for Rockin’ Ricke’s Open Jam and kept the party going. All and all, the event was a smashing success. Songwriters Showcase lands in a good place… The 29 th Annual Songwriters Showcase was held at Roberts Point Park in Port A last Monday, May 21 st . This event is a fund raiser for the Island Art Center and has moved around every year since leaving it’s home at the Tarpon Inn in 2009. They tried Cinnamon Shores in 2010 and the pavilion at Roberts Point the next year with everyone, including myself, whining to no end about it not being at our beloved Inn anymore and how bad the sound is in the pavillion. This year the powers that be came up with the best solution I’ve seen. They pulled a 40 foot flatbed trailer to the very end of the park, by the water, and fenced off the “Chili Field”. This seems like the perfect place to set up a permanent stage, to me. I like the Patsy Jones stage by the ferry landing, but this location had a better feel to it. By the way, the music was glorious! For me, the highlight of the evening was seeing Triggerfish reunite. I commend Preecher Williams, Woodie Lawson and Mary Rose for putting on another fabulous event and for keeping this wonderful Port A tradition alive. It’s one of the things that makes Port A so special. Memorial Day Weekend Best Bets… Here’s a quick rundown for my picks over the Memorial Day Weekend. The Rockport Festival of Food and Wine is going on over at the Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport on Saturday and Sunday. I previewed all their acts in last weeks column (Carol Elliott, Carolyn Wonderland, Aqua Vox, Larry Joe Taylor, Bo Porter, Another Level). This is a very comfortable festival and I highly recommend it. On Saturday, the 26 th : Max Stalling (Ft. Worth, TX) brings his Americana show to the Executive Surf Club, chick magnet, Bob Schneider (Austin, TX) plays Brewster Street, blues belter Shelly King (Austin, TX) is at Dr. Rockits, and Jul and the Chrome Wheels play the Tarpon Ice House. Over at the Back Porch the weekend starts on Thursday with Texas Renegade. Then on Friday and Saturday they bring in the heavyweights, Gary P. Nunn (Austin, TX) and Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX). And, on Sunday the Porch will have the big horn fueled dance band, Cruise Control (Corpus Christi, TX) funkin’ up the joint. DO NOT MISS LIST Rockport Music Festival The second annual Rockport Music Festival will be held in Fulton Harbor Park on June 7-9. The level of talent playing this fest is staggering. I wrote a detailed description of all the acts playing this festival in the May edition of CC Magazine. You can read it online on their Facebook page. Here’s the line- up. On Thursday the 7 th the master of blue eyed soul, Delbert McClinton (Ft. Worth, TX) will once again play the private VIP festival kick-off party. Delbert is the guy who gave harmonica lessons to John Lennon and played with Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed and Bobby Blue Bland. In my mind, he’s the eighth wonder of the world. Austin’s hippiest chick, Toni Price, will open the show. On Friday the 8 th the festival goes country with two amazing performers. The Houston kid, Rodney Crowell (Nashville, TN) and the next generation’s answer to Nashville, Hayes Carll, will perform. Crowell came up in the Houston camp of degenerate songwriting geniuses (Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earl) and moved to Nashville to make his mark. His incredible record, Diamonds and Dirt, scored him a Grammy nominee for “Best Country Song” (After All This Time) and five number one hits. Hayes Carll (Houston, TX) is a young man on his way to the top. Carll is the first artist to reach number one on the Americana charts with a self –released album. On Saturday the 9 th get ready for a world class show. None other than Los Lobos (East Los Angeles, CA) will headline followed by Marcia Ball (Austin, TX), The Blues Broads featuring Traci Nelson and Angela Strehli, Greezy Wheels (Austin, TX) and The RMF All-Stars featuring Derek O’Brien, Chris Layton and David Grissom. Where to start? Los Lobos started out three decades ago as “just another band from east L.A” and can now claim 10 Grammies and 19 records with NO line-up changes. Did I mention that they hung the moon? Marcia Ball has been Austin’s darling since she came on the scene in the 70’s with Freda and the Firedogs. She’s released 16 albums since 1972 and has been nominated for a Grammy. The Blues Broads are a super-group of ladies with high pedigree. Tracy Nelson (Nashville, TN) goes back to the 60’s Fillmore scene in San Francisco with her old band, Mother Earth. He voice is one of the more powerful forces on this earth. Nelson’s signature song, Down So Low, will bring tears to your eyes. Angela Strehli (San Francisco, CA) is a Texas girl who personifies a classy blues singer. Greezy Wheels (Austin, TX) used to be the house band at the world famous Armadillo World Headquarters back in the 70’s. And the RMF All-Stars feature two of Austin’s guitar gods, Derek O’Brien and David Grissom, plus the drummer from Stevie Ray’s band, Double Trouble, Chris Layton. I can personally attest that these guys will blow the roof off. And that’s the truth!
