Standard specificationsThe 3AH3 vacuum circuit-breaker comply with thestandards of IEC 56, IEC 694, BS 5311 and DIN VDE0670. The V-breakers 3AH3 for 15kV rated voltagemeet the requirements of the American standardsANSI C37 with respect to their insulating capacity.

Ambient temperature/humidity and loadabilityThe 3AH3 V-breakers are designed for the normaloperating conditions laid down in the standards.Permissible ambient temperatures:

Maximum value =+40°CAverage over a period of 24 hours =+35°CMinimum value = -5°CPermissible atmospheric humidity:Relative humidity, 24 hours mean <95%Relative humidity, 1month mean <90%

Under these conditions condensation may occasionallyoccur. The rated normal currents listed in Fig. 1/4 werelaid down for 40°C ambience in accordance with DINVDE/IEC. Use under conditions other than normal ispossible with certain measures that can be implemen-ted on request.

The maximum permissible load current as a function ofthe 3AH3 V-breaker ambient temperature has beenplotted in Fig.1/2. The load currents indicated apply toopen-type switchgear. Metal-enclosed switchgear mustbe derated as specified by switchgear manufacturer.

Site AltitudeThe rated insulating capacity values (rated impulsewithstand voltage, rated power frequency withstandvoltage) 1) specified for the equipment are, in accord-ance with the provisions if VDE Standard 0111 and IECPublication 71, based on standard atmosphericconditions (1013 h Pa, 20 ºC, and 11g/m3 watercontent ).i.e. sea lever. The insulating capacity of aninsulation in air decreases with increasing altitude as aresult of change in the air density, Standards prom-ulgated by VDE, IEC and other disregard this decreasein insulating capacity for altitude of up to 1000m, i.e.the decrease of approximately 9% at this altitude is stillpermissible.

The standards provide no guideline for altitudes ofmore than 1000 m with respect to insulation ratings;they leave this up to an agreement between manufa-cture and user.

Our own recommendation is as follows:Since this method used for rating insulation up toaltitudes of 1000 m has proved to be satisfactory, itshould also be applied to higher altitudes. The altitudecorrection factor a should therefore be based on theinsulating capacity at 1000m, which is lower by 9%(corresponding to 0.91 or 1/1.1) than the capacity atsea level. The following expression thus applies for the selectionof the equipment:

Rated withstand voltage to be selected 2)Required rated withstand voltage 2)

> (1.1xa)Example:Site altitude above sea level 3000 mRequired rated impulse withstand voltage 95kV(For a 15kV system according to ANSI)Correction factor a 0,73(According to Fig. 1/3)Rated impulse withstand voltage to be selected:

95kV1.1x0.73

=118kV

Switchgear with a rated voltage of 24kV, List2 (ratedlightning impulse withstand voltage of 125kV) meet thisrequirement. The actual insulating capacity at the site is thenwithstand voltage 3) = a* rated withstand voltage 2)of the selected switchgear unit.

The following definitions apply:1) Rated withstand voltage2)=require value corresponding to the provision of DIN ,VDE,IEC for sea level. Withstand voltage 3)= actual value for the given altitude2) Rated lightning impulse withstand voltage Rated power frequency withstand voltage3) Lightning impulse withstand voltage Power frequency withstand voltage

Low-voltage plug connector (X0)

The control elements of the 3AH3 vacuum circuit-breaker provided in the mechanism housing are wiredfor external connection to the plug connector(X0). Thestandard version is provided with a 64-pole plugconnector.

Shunt closing release (Y9) 3AY1510The closing solenoid unlatches the charged closingspring and thus closes the circuit-breaker electricallyIt is available for both AC and DC operation. Aftercompletion of a closing operation, the closing solenoidis de-energized internally.

Shunt releases (shunt opening releases)The shunt releases are used for automatic tripping ofcircuit-breakers by means of appropriate protectiverelays and for deliberate tripping by other electricalmeans. They are designed for connection to externalvoltage (DC or AC voltage). In special cases, fordeliberate tripping, they can also be connected to avoltage transformer.

Shunt releases based on two different operatingprinciples are used.

Shunt release (Y1) 3AY1510The 3AY1510 shunt release is used as standard in thebasic circuit-breaker version, with this design, theelectrically supplied tripping pulse is passed to the″open″ latching mechanism by means of a direct-actionsolenoid armature and the circuit-breaker is thusopened.

Shunt release (Y2) 3AX1101 1)

The 3AX1101 shunt release is fitted if more than oneshunt release is required. With its design, the electricalopening command is transferred in boosted form to the″Open″ latching mechanism via a solenoid armaturethrough unlatching of a energy store and thus thecircuit-breaker is opened.Power consumption: <60W or <55VAUndervoltage release (Y7) 3AX1103 1)

Undervoltage release consist of a stored-energymechanism, an unlatching mechanism and anelectromagnet system which is connected continuouslyto the supply when the circuit-breaker is in the closestate. If this voltage drops to below a certain value theunlatching mechanism is released and opening of thecircuit-breaker is thus initiated via the stored-energymechanism.

The deliberate tripping of undervoltage releasegenerally takes place via an NC contact in the trippingcircuit. But it can also be carried out via an NO contactby short-circuiting of the magnet coil. With this type oftripping, the short-circuit current is limited by the built-inresistors (see circuit diagram Fig.3/4)

Under voltage releases can also be connected tovoltage transformers. When the operating voltagedrops to impermissibly low levels, the circuit-breaker istripped automatically.Power consumption: <6.5 W or <7.5 VACT-Operated release (Y4) 3AX1102 1)

CT-operated releases consist of a stored-energymechanism, an unlatching mechanism and anelectromagnet system. When the tripping current isexceeded (90% of the CT-operated release ratedcurrent) the unlatching device of the stored-energymechanism is released and thus opening of the circuit-breaker is initiated. In addition to the primary currenttransformer, matching transformers are required forapplication of the CT-operated releases.Power consumption for 0.5A and 1A<6VA at 90% ofthe rated current and with open armature.

CT-operated release (Y6) 3AX11041)(Low-energy release 0.1Ws)

In connection with a solid-state release (7SJ41overcurrent time protection or similar) and low-powerprimary current transformers (window-typetransformers), it is possible with the 3AX1104 to createa CT-operated release without additional supplyvoltage.

The 3AX1104 is of similar design as the 3AX1101/1102 releases. With its coil data and its low energyrequirement of < 0.1Ws, its designend to be directlyactuated by a release impulse provided by a capacitorof the above-mentioned electronic release systems.

Breaker tripping signal, cut-out switches (S6and S7)

When the vacuum circuit-breaker is tripped by meansof a release, the position switch S6 briefly makescontact. This contact making can be used forsignalling. In the event of intentional mechanicaltripping, the cut-out switch S7 breaks this contact.

Varistor module (V1 to V3) 3AX1526 1)The disconnection of inductive loads in DC circuits maycause switching overvoltage which pose a risk toelectronic control units. In order to prevent this, theinductances of the circuit-breaker mechanism andcontrol (motor, closing solenoid, shunt release andauxiliary contactor) can be connected to varistor (withDC operation). For rated operating voltage of 60V to220V DC the varistor module 3AX1526 is available asan accessory; it limits the overvoltage to about 500V.The module contains 2 separate varistor circuits.

Electrical local closing/electrical interlocking1)

In the basic version, the closing spring must bereleased mechanically if the breaker is to be closedlocally. A version with electrical local closing can alsobe supplied. In this version, the making circuit of thecircuit-breaker is activated electrically via a push-button. In this way, allowance can also be made forstation-specific interlocks, and undesired makingoperations prevented. For example, interlocking of thecircuit-breaker is possible via the auxiliary contact of adisconnector.Circuit-breaker with electrical local closing cannot beclosed mechanical.

Mechanical interlocking1)Operating mechanism of disconnectors can be fittedwith a mechanical switchgear interlocking facility. Thedisconnector and the associated circuit-breaker are inthis case interlocked mechanically. The sensing parts check the switch position of thecircuit-breaker and prevent if from closing mechanicallyand electrically if the associated disconnector is not ina position to allow safe operation. On the other hand, the disconnector is prevented from being operatedwhen the circuit-breaker is closed.

The mechanical interlocking facility can also be used tointerlock breaker trucks or draw-out breaker parts.

Adjustment instruction: 3G 460 00127 (3AX 1520-3C)

Dimensions and weightThe dimensions and weights of the vacuum circuit-breaker are shown in the relevant drawings.

For planning purposes, the drawings showing detailedoverall dimensions, can be ordered through theappropriate Siemens agency.

The weight is also stated on the breaker rating plate.
