For two years from the date of purchase, when this Craftsman Edger is maintained, lu-bricated, and tuned up. according to the operating and maintenance instructions in theowner's manual, Craftsmanwill repair, free of charge, any defect in material or work-manship.If this Craftsman Edger is used for commemial or rental purposes, this warranty ap-plies for only 90 days from the date of purchase.

This warranty does not cover the following:

• Expendable items which become worn during normal use, such as spark plugs, etc.

• Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bent crankshafts and the failure to maintain the equipment according to the instructions con-tained in the owner's manual.

IMPORTANT: Safety standards requireoperator presence controls to minimize therisk of injury. Your Edger is equipped withsuch controls. Do not attempt to defeat thefunction of the operator presence controlunder any circumstances.

BEFORE USE

• Read the owner's manual carefully. Bethoroughly familiar with the controls andthe proper use of the Edger. Know how tostop the edger and disengage thecontrols quickly.

• Do not operate the Edger withoutwearing adequate outer garments. Wear

slippery surfaces.• Keep the area of operation clear of all

persons, particularly small children andpets.

• Thoroughly inspect the area where theEdger is to be used and remove allforeign objects.

FUEL SAFETY

• Handle fuel with care; it is highly flam-mable. °

• Use an approved container.• Check fuel supply before each use,

allowing space for expansion as the heatof the engine and/or sun can cause fuel toexpand.

• Fill fuel tank outdoors with extreme care.

Never fill fuel tank indoors. Replace fueltank cap securely and wipe up spilledfuel.

• Never remove the fuel tank cap or addfuel to a running or hot engine.

• Never store fuel or Edger with fuel in thetank inside a building where fumes mayreach an open flame.

OPERATING SAFETY

• Never allow children or young teenagersto operate the Edger. Keep them awaywhile it is operating. Never allow adults tooperate the Edger without properinstruction.

• Do not operate this machine if you aretaking drugs or other medication whichcan cause drowsiness or affect yourability to operate this machine.

• Do not use this machine if you arementally or physically unable to operatethis machine safely.

• Always wear safety glasses or eyeshields during operation or while perform-ing an adjustment or repair to protectyour eyes from foreign objects that maybe thrown from the Edger.

• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts.

• Exercise extreme caution when operatingon or crossing gravel drives, walks, orroads. Stay alert for hidden hazards ortraffic.

• Exercise caution to avoid slipping orfalling.

• Never operate the Edger without properguards, plates, or other safety protectivedevices in place.

• Never operate the Edger at high transportspeeds on slippery surfaces. Look behindand use care when backing.

• Never allow bystanders near the Edger.• Keep children and pets away while

operating.• Never operate the Edger without good

visibility or light.• Do not run the engine indoors. The

exhaust fumes are dangerous, containingCARBON MONOXIDE, an ODORLESSand DEADLY GAS.

• Take all possible precautions whenleaving the Edger unattended. Stop theengine.

• Do not overload the Edger capacity byattempting to edge too deep at too fast arate.

SAFE STORAGE• Always refer to the owner's manual

instructions for important details if theEdger is to be stored for an extendedperiod.

• Never store the Edger with fuel in the fueltank inside a building where ignitionsources are present such as water andspace heaters, clothes dryers, and thelike. Allow the engine to cool beforestoring in any enclosure.

• Keep the Edger in safe working condition.Check all fasteners at frequent intervalsfor proper tightness.

REPAIR/ADJUSTMENTS SAFETY

• After striking a foreign object, stop theengine (motor). Remove the wire from thespark plug, and keep the wire away fromthe plug to prevent accidental starting.Thoroughly inspect the Edger for anydamage, and repair the damage beforerestarting and operating it.

• If Edger should start to vibrate abnor-mally, stop engine (motor) and checkimmediately for the cause. Vibration isgenerally a warning of trouble.

• Stop the blade whenever you leave theoperating position. Also, disconnect thespark plug wire before unclogging theblade and when making any repairs,adjustments or inspections.

• When cleaning, repairing or inspecting,shut off the engine and make certain allmoving parts have stopped.

• Never attempt to make any adjustmentswhile the engine is running except whenspecifically recommended by the manu-facturer.

TO REMOVE EDGER FROM CARTON

• Remove the control rod, bottle of oil and

parts bag from carton.• Cut down all four corners of the carton.

• Remove packing material on front andrear of unit. Leave packing material onbottom of unit until control rod is as-

sembled. This will help keep the frontwheel in a stable position to allow foreasier assembly of control rod.

TO ASSEMBLE THE EDGER

• Loosen T-knobs before pivoting the upperhandle upward being careful not to pinchor pull the engine control wire, until thehandles align, then tighten T-knobs.T-knobs should be to the outside of the

handles as shown in second figure.

• Insertoneendof the control rod from rightto left through the hole in the front wheelbracket. Attach with hairpin found in partsbag. See figure below.

• To attach the recoil starter rope to the ropeguide, twist the rope through the ropeguide mounted on the right side of thehandle.

Throttle Control - Used to control the en-

gine speed.

Primer Button - Injects fuel directly into thecarburetor manifold for faster starts.

Starter Handle - The engine on this edgeris equipped with an easy pull recoil starter.

Depth Control Lever - Controls the depthof the blade.

Blade Guard - Used to prevent stones orother material from being thrown at the op-erator.

Engine Control Lever- Must be held backto allow engine to start and run.

Index Lever- Permits adjustment from theedging (vertical) position to beveling (45 ° )position. To change position, pull the indexlever and rotate the quill assembly to thedesired angle or position.

HOW TO USE YOUR EDGER

Z_ WARNING: The operation of this

Edger can result in foreign objects beingthrown into the eyes, which can cause se-vere eye damage. Always wear safetyglasses or eye shields while operating theEdger.

We recommend standard safety glasses orWide Vision Safety Mask for over yourglasses.

TO STOP EDGER

• Make sure the depth control lever is all

the way forward and release enginecontrol lever. There is a O STOPposition on the throttle control lever in

case of a failure with the engine controllever. Wait for all moving parts to stopbefore leaving the operator position.

Z_ CAUTION: Never leave the Edger

unattended while the engine is running.Always raise the cutting blade and stop theengine.

TO USE THE ENGINE CONTROLLEVER

• Pull the engine control lever back withyour left hand and hold it in contact withthe upper handle cross tube to allow en-

gine to start and run. See next figure.

• Release the engine control lever to stopthe engine.

NOTE: If engine continues to run after

lever is released, use the stop O positionon the throttle control to stop the engine.See your Craftsman Service Center to cor-rect the engine control lever problem.

/_ CAUTION: Always stop the engine

and make sure all parts have stoppedwhenever leaving the operator's position or

when cleaning, replacing or inspecting theEdger.

• Run at full '_ engine speed duringnormal use.

• Push throttle control lever forward to

increase speed; back to decreasespeed.

• Pulling the throttle control lever all theway back will stop IO the engine.

• Push primer button I-r-five times. Seepage 6 figure for location, Wait about twoseconds between each push.

NOTE: Do not use primer button to re-start a warm engine after a short shut-down.

TO USE THE DEPTH CONTROLLEVER

• Position your Edger in desired edging lo-cation before operating.

• Start the engine and move the depthcontrol lever back to lower the cuttingblade.

• Select the edging depth you need.There are 3 selections up to approxi-

mately 2 inches deep.

IMPORTANT: If very deep edging isrequired, we recommend that a shallowcut be made first, then cut at greaterdepths until the desired depth is ob-tained.

/_ WARNING: Keep away from the rotat-

ing blade. The blade can cause injury.

TO USE THE INDEX LEVER

(BEVELING OPERATION)

• Stop engine and disconnect the sparkplug wire from the spark plug.

INDEX LEVER IN THE NOTCH MARKEDBEVEL CUT

• Pull the index lever out of the edgingnotch as shown above and position it inthe notch marked bevel cut.

• Reconnect the spark plug wire andstart the engine. Move the depthcontrol lever to the desired bevelingdepth.

_ CAUTION: Never leave the Edgerunattended while the engine is running.Prior to adjusting the indexing blade posi-tion, always raise the cutting blade andstop the engine.

WARNING: Keep away from the rotatingblade. The blade can cause injury.

TO USE THE BEVEL CUT FEATURE

Bevel edging reduces the need to edge asoften creating a type of trench along yoursidewalk, driveway and etc. Move the in-dex lever to the bevel cut position and se-cure index lever in the slot. Prior to startingthe engine, line the Edger up as ff you weregoing to bevel cut and move the depth con-trol lever down to test the blade location.Return the depth control lever to the for-ward slot of the adjustment bracket to raisethe blade. Start the engine and move thedepth control lever to the desired depth ofcut.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

PRE-USE CHECK OF CONTROLS

All controls should be checked for properfunction before servicing or starting theengine.

• Move the depth control lever into allthree positions in the selector plate.Make sure the depth control lever snapsinto all three holes as shown in figure onpage 6.

• Return the depth control lever to theforward hole in the selector plate.

FILL/ADD OIL:

This Edger was shipped with a 20 ouncecontainer of SAE30 motor oil. This oil mustbe added to the engine before operating.Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick and fill thecrankcase to FULL line on dipstick. Yourengine may not require the entire 20ounces of oil. DO NOT OVERFILL.

NOTE: Engine may already contain someresidual oil.

Tighten the fill cap/dipstick securely eachtime you check the oil level.

OIL RECOMMENDATIONS

Only use high quality detergent oil ratedwith API service classification SG. Selectthe oil's SAE viscosity grade according to

your expected operating temperature:

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30,10W30, etc.) improve starting in coldwe_tther, these multi-viscosity oils will resultin increased oil consumption when usedabove 32°F. Check your engine oil levelmore frequently to avoid possible enginedamage from running low on oil.

TO ADD ENGINE OIL• Place the Edger on a level surface.• Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick as shown

in next figure.• Fill the engine crankcase, pouring slowly.

DO NOT OVERFILL. For approximatecapacity see PRODUCT SPECIFICA-TIONS on page 11 of this manual.

• Reinstall the oil fill cap/dipstick andtighten securely. Wipe away excess oil.

• Check oil before each use. Add ifneeded.

FILL GAS:NOTE: ENGINES WHICH ARE CERTI-FIED TO COMPLY WITH CALIFORNIAAND US EPA EMISSION REGULATIONSFOR ULGE ENGINES: Are certified tooperate on regular unleaded gasoline.Include the following emission controlsystem(s): EM, TWC (if so equipped).include any user adjustable features -therefore no other adjustments are needed.Fill the fuel tank with clean, fresh, unleadedpremium, or reformulated automotivegasoline only. DO NOT use leadedgasoline. Be sure that the container youpour the gasoline from is clean and freefrom dust or other foreign particles. Neveruse gasoline that may be stale from longperiods of storage in the container.Reinstall fuel cap.WARNING: Experience indicates thatalcohol blended fuels (called gasohol orusing methanol) can attract moisture whichleads to separation and formation of acids

during storage. Acidic gas can damage thefuel system of an engine while in storage.To avoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage of 30days or longer. Drain fuel tank, start engineand let it run until fuel lines and carburetor

are empty. Use fresh fuel next season. SeeStorage Instructions for additional informa-tion. Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

Z_ WARNING: Gasoline is flammableand caution must be used when handling orstodng it. Do not fill fuel tank while Edger isrunning, hot, or when Edger is in anenclosed area. Keep away from openflame, electrical spark, and do not smokewhile filling the fuel tank. Never fill fuel tankcompletely; but fill the tank to within 1/4-1/2inch from the top to provide space forexpansion of fuel. Always fill fuel tankoutdoors and use a funnel or spout toprevent spilling. Make sure to wipe up anyspilled fuel before starting the engine. Storegasoline in a clean, approved container,and keep the cap in place on the container.Keep gasoline in a cool, well ventilatedplace; never in the house. Never buy morethan a 30 day supply of gasoline to ensurevolatility. Gasoline is intended to be used asa fuel for internal combustion engines;therefore, do not use gasoline for any otherpurpose. Since many children like the smellof gasoline, keep it out of their reachbecause the fumes are dangerous to

inhale, as well as being explosive.

TO START THE ENGINE

Before starting the engine, be sure youhave read and understood all the instruc-tions on the preceding pages. The Edger isequipped with a recoil starter. The opera-tion of the engine is controlled by thethrottle control lever. See page 6.

• Push the depth control lever forward andlatch in the forward slot of the adjustmentbracket to raise the blade.

• Move the throttle control lever, see figureon page 6, to the FAST ,(me position.

• Push primer button I_" fiv"'etimes, seefigure on page 6. Wait about twoseconds between each push.

NOTE: Do not use primer to restart awarm engine after a short shutdown.

• Pull the engine control lever back tocontact the upper handle tube and holdthe Edger handle and control lever firmly

• Pull back sharply on the recoil starterhandle. DO NOT allow the starter rope tosnap back, let it rewind slowly whileholding the starter handle.

NOTE: If engine fails to start after threepulls, push primer button two times andpull starter rope again.

• When the engine starts, run at full enginespeed during normal use.

NOTE: The cutting blade speed iscontrolled by the engine speed. Toreduce the cutting blade speed, pushback on the throttle control lever. To

increase the blade speed, push thethrottle control lever forward.

• To stop O the engine, make sure the

depth control lever is all the way forwardand release the engine control lever tothe stop position or push the throttlecontrol lever to stop I_!. See figure onpage 6.

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES

Z_ WARNING: Never run the engineindoors or in a poorly ventilated area.Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide,an odorless and deadly gas. Keep hands,feet, hair and loose clothing away from anymoving parts on the engine or Edger. Avoidthe muffler and surrounding areas. Tem-peraturas may exceed 150° F.

EDGING TIPS

• Edging is best performed when conditionsare dry. If the soil is too wet, dirt becomespacked in and around the blade causingpremature belt wear and decreasedperformance.

• If dirt does become packed around theblade, stop the engine, remove the sparkplug wire, and remove the packed debrisbefore continuing to edge.

• If very deep edging is required, werecommend that a shallow cut be madefirst, then cuts at greater depth until thedesired depth is obtained.

• Uniform edging can be performed whenthe blade guide (see figure on page 6)rides on and against the surface whichyou are edging.

• Edging can be customized by varying thenumber of passes and by the distanceyour blade is from the surface you areedging.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The warranty on this Edger does not coveritems that have been subjected to operatorabuse or negligence. To receive full valuefrom the warranty, the operator must main-tain the Edger as instructed in this manual.The above chart is provided to assist theoperator in propedy maintaining the Edger.

LUBRICATION

• After each 25 hours of use of your Edger,apply light machine oil to all movingparts.

• We recommend that the oil in the enginecrankcase be changed after each 25hours of use thereafter.

NOTE: If the Edger is being used in sandyor dusty areas, change the oil more fre-quently to prevent premature engine wear.

TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL

• Disconnect the spark plug wire from thespark plug.

• Remove the oil drain plug as shown infirst figure on this page and drain the oilinto a flat pan.

• After draining all the oil, reinstall the oildrain plug securely.

NOTE: The oil will drain more freely whenthe engine is warm.

• Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick. See firstfigure on page 9.

• Fill the engine crankcase, pouring slowly.DO NOT OVERFILL. For approximate ca-pacity see PRODUCT SPECIFICA-TIONS on this page.

NOTE: The quill assembly bearings arefactory sealed and will require no lubrica-tion.

• Reconnect the spark plug wire on thespark plug.

Oil Drain Plug

AIR CLEANER

Replace the filter once a year; more oftenunder dusty or dirty conditions. DO NOTattempt to clean or oil the air filter.

To install a new air filter, do the following:

• Disconnect the spark plug wire from thespark plug.

•Tum the cover as shown below to the left

(counterclockwise) and remove the coverand the air filter from the flange.

• Discard the air filter.

• Clean the cover and the flange thor-oughly.

• Insert the new air filter into the cover.

• Push the cover firmly against the flangeand tum it to the right (clockwise) as faras it will go as shown in figure below. Besure the retainers are locked around theflange.

• Reconnect the spark plug wire.

CAUTION: Never run the engine withoutthe air cleaner element installed. Adefective air cleaner can result in loss of

engine power and can cause excessivewear or damage to the engine componentsif dirt or dust is permitted to enter theengine through the carburetor. A damaged

air cleaner, or one that is clogged with dustor dirt should be replaced immediately.

SPARK PLUG

Clean the spark plug and reset the gapperiodicany. Clean the area around thespark plug base before removal, to preventdirt from entering the engine. Replace thespark plug if the electrodes are pitted or

burned or if the porcelain is cracked. Cleanthe spark plug by carefully scraping theelectrodes (do not sand blast or use a wirebrush). Be sure the spark plug is clean andfree of foreign material. Check the elec-trodes gap with a wire feeler gauge andreset to .030 inches if necessary. If a newspark plug is needed, refer to the PROD-UCT SPECIFICATIONS on page 11 for theproper replacement spark plug.

Before reinstalling the spark plug, coat the

threads lightly with graphite or light oil toinsure easy removal. Tighten the spark plugfirmly into the engine. If a torque wrench isavailable, torque the spark plug to 15 foot-pounds.

Z_ CAUTION: Always stop the engineand disconnect the spark plug wire beforemaking any repairs to the Edger.

V-BELT REPLACEMENT

Your Edger is equipped with a V-belt madeof a special compound. If the belt becomesworn or breaks, replace it with an originalequipment belt as shown in the RepairParts section of this manual. Never use asubstitute.

• Disconnect the spark plug wire.• Drain gasoline and oil from Edger.• Tip Edger backwards on handle and

block top of handle against wall or bench.• Remove three screws from the belt guard

as shown in first figure.

• Push blade bearing housing back towardsengine to compress spring and releasetension on belt.

• Remove old belt (carefully note directionof twist around engine pulley). Seesecond figure.

• While spring is compressed, install newbelt on quill and engine pulleys being sureto twist belt in proper direction as shownin second figure.

NOTE: If belt is not installed propedy theblade will not turn in the proper direction andcould damage the blade or belt. Refer tosecond figure for proper direction of belttravel.

BLADEREPLACEMENT

The cutting blade is subject to wear anddamage such as nicks and dents. This willnot generally affect its function.

This blade is specially designed to not re-quire sharpening. Do not attempt to sharpenthis blade. If wom or damaged the bladeshould be replaced.

CAUTION: When removing or tighteningthe blade nut, always use the methodshown in figure below. The holding wrenchmust always be positioned on the nut be-hind the cutting blade.

/_ CAUTION: Do not attempt to sharpen

this blade. You could cause damage to theblade which could result in breakage andpossible user or bystander injury.

To replace the blade, do the following:

• Disconnect spark plug wire.

• Remove the 1/2-20 Iocknut shown infigure below securing the blade to thedrive shaft.

• Remove the blade.

IMPORTANT: Note the position of thewasher and the blade cutting edge toensure proper re-assembly. The blade ismarked THIS SIDE OUT.

• Position the replacement blade againstthe washer on the drive shaft and securewith flange nut. Be sure to tighten nutsecurely to 40-45 foot pounds.

• Reconnect the spark plug wire.

WARNING: Always wear gloves whenworking on blade, it is sharp.

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

The carburetor has been pre-set at thefactory and readjustment should not benecessary. However, if the carburetor doesneed to be adjusted, contact your nearestCraftsman Service Center.

IMPORTANT: Never tamper with the

engine governor, which is factory set forproper engine speed. Overspeeding theengine above the factory high speedsetting can be dangerous. If you think theengine-governed high speed needsadjusting, contact your nearest CraftsmanService Center, which has the properequipment and experience to make anynecessary adjustments.

Edger indoors or in an enclosed, poorlyventilated area. If gasoline remains in thetank, fumes may reach an open flame,spark or pilot light from a furnace, waterheater, clothes dryer, cigarette, etc.

• Clean the Edger thoroughly; remove alldebris and wipe the unit dry.

• Inspect the Edger for worn or damagedparts and tighten all loose hardware.

• Oil all points described in the Lubricationparagraph in the MAINTENANCE sectionof this manual.

• Store the Edger in a protected area andcover for additional protection.

• Store the Edger in the wheels-down,operating position. If the Edger is storedin any other position, oil from thecrankcase could enter the cylinder,causing a service problem.

You can keep your engine in good operat-ing condition during storage by:

• Changing oil.

• Lubricating the piston/cylinder area. Thiscan be done by first removing the sparkplug and squirting clean engine oil intothe spark plug hole. Then cover the sparkplug hole with a rag to absorb oil spray.Next, rotate the engine by pulling thestarter two or three times. Finally,reinstall spark plug and attach spark plugwire.

IMPORTANT:A yearly checkup or tune-up by a Craftsman Service Center is agood way of ensuring that your Edgerwill provide maximum performance forthe next season.

ENGINE

IMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essentialfuel system parts such as the carburetor,fuel filter, fuel hose, or tank during storage.Also, experience indicates that usingalcohol-blended fuels (called gasohol,ethanol or methanol) can attract moisturewhich leads to separation and formation ofacids during storage. Acidic gas candamage the fuel system of an engine whilein storage.

To prevent engine damage (if Edger is notused for more than 30 days) follow thesteps below.

• To remove gasoline, run the engineuntil the tank is empty and the enginestops.

• If you do not want to remove gasoline,a fuel stabilizer (such as Craftsman fuelstabilizer No. 33500) may be added toany gasoline left in the tank to minimizegum deposits and acids. If the tank isalmost empty, mix stabilizer with freshgasoline in a separate container and addsome to the tank. Always follow instruc-tions on stabilizer container, Then runengine at least 10 minutes after stabilizeris added to allow mixture to reach
