Advances in Dermatology
COURSE DESCRIPTIONDermatology is a rapidly evolving specialty, with new advances in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology made every year. New medications and treatment modalities for both common and uncommon dermatological diseases have been released, or will be in the next few years, that will change the treatment indications for these conditions. In addition, older medications may still play a role in treating these conditions, and how they should be properly incorporated is vital for optimizing patient outcomes.
This two-day program will educate practitioners with an interest in the care of persons with skin disorders, including dermatologists, dermatologic surgeons, other specialists, primary care physicians and residents in dermatology with current therapeutic options and treatment guidelines as taught by an experienced faculty. It will focus on newly emerging clinically applicable knowledge — ranging from new guidelines to recognition of emerging agents and adverse events to translational research — regarding the best approaches to management of patients in order to achieve the best quality of care/outcomes for patients suffering from both common and uncommon dermatologic conditions.
STATEMENT OF NEED • There are new systemic modalities for treating debilitating diseases such as psoriasis, autoimmune and other inflammatory dermatological conditions. Providers need to learn how and when to incorporate these modalities, especially in conjunction with older systemic options. As the field of dermatology learns more about these potentially devastating disorders, treatments become better tailored toward treating these diseases more directly and effectively. The hope is that using these new treatments — either alone or in conjunction with older therapies — will improve patient disease outcome and decrease adverse events.
• Communication is a key part of patient safety. Counseling patients on expectations of benefits and about potential adverse events is a critical part of successful patient communications. Practitioners need to be updated on emerging knowledge regarding effectiveness and side effects so as to best counsel patients.
• There are new topical medications that are being released that are expected to change the landscape of the medical management of acne, rosacea, and atopic dermatitis. These new treatment options will be made available to patients who previously had not been
eligible for any kind of treatment options. In addition, these new treatments can be combined with older systemic options.
• New technologies in laser and light source devices and injectable filler substances are being developed rapidly for the treatment of dermatologic conditions. These advances may offer better outcomes for patients with these dermatologic conditions and dermatologists need to learn how and when to use them safely and effectively.
• As the indications for optimal management of cutaneous malignancies is always evolving, it is essential that clinicians be updated on these new options. New recommendations based on epidemiologic, histopathologic and clinical research need to be reviewed as well as best options on how to manage these malignancies to decrease both patient morbidity and mortality.
TARGET AUDIENCE Dermatologists or physicians with an interest in dermatology
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
• Establish an algorithm to determine which patients with psoriasis or autoimmune dermatological conditions are eligible for each new drug, how to dose the drug and how to safely monitor these patients
• Better counsel patients on the expected benefits and possible side effects of systemic and topical medications, as well as the use of surgical and other procedural techniques to treat skin diseases and cosmetic concerns
• Recognize those patients previously ineligible for treatment of acne, rosacea and atopic dermatitis and offer them new therapies
• Describe the safety profile, risks and side effects of new medications; explain how to dose and monitor therapy; and assess their efficacy depending on the severity of disease
• Establish a strategy to recognize which patients would benefit from new laser/light source devices or injectable substances, as well as describe how to use them safely and effectively
• Describe the new indications for management of cutaneous malignancies and outline the options for their patients suffering from cutaneous malignancy in order to optimize their outcome
