    Preface This book is a compendium of sample topics for summer training of MBA students. Anattempt has been made to make it as comprehensive and concise as possible. Thetopics given herein are for the purpose of guiding the students to choose theirsummer training projects and can be modified as per the requirement of thecompany. The topics have been classified into areas of specialization for the sake of convenience and clarity. In addition to being a guide for summer training this bookcan also be used to peek into the job requirements of various specializations and canbe used to decide on the right specialization for a student.

    In addition to sample topics this book contains various guidelines to be followed inorder to derive the maximum benefit out of the two months of summer training. Itcontains the rules of University and the code of conduct the student is expected toobserve during the period of internship.

    The book also contains a section on the activities which are generally done by variousdepartments of a company. This shall help in widening the perspective of thestudents and also increase the exposure he can receive.

    Working capitalmanagement at theorganization

    Companys big chunk of fundsusually gets stuck in workingcapital. In order to run the businesssmoothly business needs theappropriate amount of workingcapital. But working capital at anytime should not be more/less thanthe requirement of the company.Appropriate amount of workingcapital needs to be maintained .

    Working capital has three majorderivers:

    Cash Receivables Payables

    All three need to be properlymanaged. Cash conversion cycleneeds to be minimized, Receivableturnover and payable cycle need tobe optimized. All the factors havetheir effect on profitability of thebusiness. Students will study theworking capital management

    techniques followed by thecompany so as to maintain theliquidity while maintaining theprofitability and suggest means toimprove the working capital cyclewithout hampering profitability.

    Project financingIn a business companies have towork on new projects in order toenhance their profitability. Butbefore a new project is taken up itsviability has to be checked. It shouldpass certain parameters. Once thecompany decides to go up with aproject then the problem of itsfinancing comes. How to finance aproject? Different financinginstruments have to be evaluated.Students will study the financinginstruments used by the company

    for financing a project out of available options. Cause forselecting a particular instruments.

    They will analyze the availableinstruments and suggest thecompany about other profitableoptions.

    Ratio analysis to know thefinancial position of company*

    Ratios tell all about the companyswell being. Different ratios are usedto get information about companysworth, its profitability, liquidity &solvency. Students will get theinformation about the differentratios of the company. Theircomposition and will compare it

    with their peer group. Whileanalyzing the ratios if they find anyflaw in companys working they willsuggest the measures to thecompany to improve their workingwhich will automatically improvethe ratios.

    Budgetary controltechniques used by theorganization

    Budgeting is a control device in the

    hands of the company. Differentbudgets are prepared by thecompany for the efficient working of the company. Because budgetedfigures give a parameter to thecompany against whom the resultshave to be evaluated. Students willstudy the different techniques usedby the company for budgetarycontrol, reasons for the use of aspecific technique. Outcomes of thetechnique in the form of increasedproduction, increased sale, lessexpenditure, reduced labor turnover, improved cash position etc.

    Inventory control techniquesused by the company

    In any production house inventoryconstitutes the major portion of their working capital. Inventorymust be managed properly so as toreduce the chances of shortage aswell as excess of inventory.Production houses use variousinventory management tools suchas ABC analysis, JIT, LIFO FIFO,stock levels etc. Student is requiredto study the various Inventory

    control techniques used by thecompany, reasons behind the use of a particular technique, benefits of using a particular technique.Students will explore theopportunities to use other Inventory

    control techniques not used by thecompany.

    Cash Conversion cycles andits Impact on theprofitability

    Firms typically follow a cycle inwhich they purchase inventory, sellgoods on credit, and then collectaccounts receivable. This cycle isreferred to as the cash conversioncycle. Sound working capital policyis designed to minimize the timebetween cash expenditures on

    materials and the collection of cashon sales.

    Shortening the cash conversioncycle leads to higher profitabilityand valuation of the company,provided the other factors areconstant. Generally, a drawback of shorter Days Sales Outstanding(DSO) is loss in sales. The students

    have to study how the companiesare achieving these mutuallycontradicting objectives andsuggest means to improve the cashconversion cycle without hamperingsales.

    Receivables managementtechniques used by thecompany

    A company gets receivableswhenever it sells goods on credit.Receivables are an importantcomponent of working capital aswell of balance sheet. Students arerequired to analyze the currentreceivable management techniques.

    Whenever a new project is undertaken by a company its financialviability needs to be checked usingvarious capital budgetingtechniques. Students will analyzethe techniques adopted by thecompany, reasons behind theadoption of a particular technique(such as payback period, NPV, IRR)its benefits over the rejectedtechniques.

    Cost reduction techniquesused by the companyand their effectiveness.

    Company can increase itsprofitability by increasing itssale/selling price or by reducing itscost. Its easier for a company toreduce its cost. Students will studythe various cost reductiontechniques used by the company

    such as KIZEN and the benefitsderived by the company after theuse of these techniques .

    NPAs and growing scope of Securitization

    NPAs are a part and parcel of banking industry. But banks can use

    these NPAs for their benefit byresorting to the technique of Securitization. Students will berequired to study the NPAs of aparticular bank, how they aregenerated and how securitizationworks in reducing NPAs. Tellingcomplete procedure followed by thebank along with required proofs.

    Risk Management in LifeInsuranceWhenever we talk about Riskmanagement it is all aboutunderwriting process. Students aresupposed to learn completeunderwriting process followed bythe life insurance company. Theyhave to find how risk can changethe premium requirements.

    A study on bankingprocedures

    Banking itself is a big industry. It iscomposed of lot of procedures say,making drafts, clearing, assigningthe MICR codes to non MICR bank

    cheques. A student doing his/herintern in the banking sector isexpected to learn all the bankingprocedures and what is the use of following these procedures.

    Comparative study of loanprocedures followed bybanks

    Loans are the life blood of the

    banking business. A procedure hasto be followed to grant a loan.Students will study the procedurefollowed by banks in granting theloans. They will also compare theloans of different banks issued insame stream. They will be requiredto find out the possible causes of difference in interest charged by

    different banks for same kind of loan.

    Portfolio ManagementPortfolio construction is itself atedious task. It needs consistentrebalancing of the assets as per theneeds of the investor. Students

    doing their intern in financialplanning will be required to know allabout the construction of portfolio,how and why the portfolios arerebalanced. They will also study theeffect of rebalancing on theportfolio.

    Hospital and HealthManagement

    Study on Patient SatisfactionStudents can work upon variousdepartments like IPD/OPD tomeasure the satisfaction level of thepatients regarding the servicesprovided by the hospital. They canfind out the areas in which thepatient satisfaction level is low andcan develop a model for improvingit, thereby helping the hospital toretain customers and increaserevenue.

    Gap AnalysisStudents can use the SERVQUALscale to measure the service gapsexisting in the service deliverysystem of the hospital. They canfind out the causes of the existinggaps. Finally they can developstrategies to close those gaps andthereby improving the servicedelivery.

    TAT of LaboratoryProcedures

    Turn Around Time (TAT) is the timeperiod between collection of samplefor diagnostic test and delivery of

    report. The students have to recordthe TAT for a definite time period.

    They have to find out the average TAT for each procedure andcompare with a benchmark. Finallydesign a model to improve up onthe procedures having higher TAT.

    This will help the hospital toimprove the responsivenessparameter of the service deliveryprocess.

    Patient Flow in OPDOPD is the unit of the hospital

    where patients have the firstservice encounter. Often it is seenthat most of the hospitals faceproblems of overcrowding andlonger waiting time period in OPD.

    This ultimately leads to thedissatisfaction among patients.Students have to do a detail studyon each and every procedure takenin the OPD. They have to find outthe lacunae in the service deliveryprocess and finally develop a modelfor optimum service delivery.

    Comparative Study withNABH standards

    NABH is the body responsible foraccreditation of hospitals in Indiawhich certifies the qualitymanagement practices in thehospitals. NABH has developedcertain guidelines and set standardsfor hospital to be certified. Studentshave to evaluate the servicedelivery system of the hospital asper the NABH guidelines and have

    to compare the status of thehospital with the benchmark set byNABH. Finally they have to suggestand recommend the hospitals toreach the NABH standards. This willhelp hospital to attract morepatients especially internationalpatients thereby increasing therevenue.

    Medical AuditMedical audit is one of the majorprocess for achieving qualityhealthcare service delivery.

    Students have to check medicalrecords of the inpatients for adefinite time period and also thepast records. They have to find outthe missing components in therecords. Finally they have todevelop a check list for maintainingthe medical records.

    Materials and Store

    ManagementStudents have to study on theparameters for selecting thevendors for hospital supplies. Theyalso have to do an in-depth studyon vendor rating system on theexisting vendors of the hospital.

    They can collect the informationfrom the market and help thehospital in getting the best vendors.

    This will help the hospital in qualityassurance and cost cutting byimproving the supply chainefficiency.

    In most of the hospital infection dueto urinary catheterization is very

    common giving rise tocomplications and increasing thelength of stay of the patients.Students have to develop a checklist for all procedures regardingurinary catheterization. They haveto keenly observe each procedureduring their stay in the hospital.

    They have to find out the deviationsin the standard procedures. Finally

    Students have to do an in-depthstudy on the design, existingfacilities, process and patient flow inthe emergency department of thehospital. They have to find out thelacunae in the above areas. Theyhave to develop an ideal design forthe department for smoothoperations. This will help hospital toreduce the overcrowding andimprove the overall operations of

    the emergency department.

    Medical Billing DepartmentStudents have to do an in-depthstudy on different billing proceduresin the hospital such as insurancereimbursement, TPA bills, ESI &

    CGHS bills etc. They have to alsofind out the patient satisfactionlevel regarding billing. They have tofind out the areas of improvementand suggest procedures foroptimum billing process.

    GENERAL RULES

    (i). Authors

    a) Single Author

    Family name first, then acomma and space and thenpersonal name(s) or initial(s).e.g. Singh, A.

    b) Two Authors

    List the authors in the formabove with & between them.

    e.g. Mohammed, A. & Khan, J.

    c) Three Authors:List the authors as above with

    a comma after the first and &after the second.

    e.g. Pryce-Jones, T., Patel, V.& Brown, P.

    d) More than three authorsshould be listed with only the

    first named followed by theGreek term et al. Thistranslates as and others.

    e.g. Hussain, J. et al.

    Editors

    Editors are treated the same

    as authors except that Ed. orEds. is put in brackets afterthe editor or editors names.

    Corporate Author

    A corporate author is a groupwhich takes responsibility forwriting a publication. It couldbe a society and professionalbody, an internationalorganisation, a governmentdepartment or any other

    group. A governmentpublication should begin withthe country, then the

    department, then anycommittee or subcommittee.

    (ii) Date

    The date of publication should beincluded.

    If there are a number of differentreissues or reprints of the item givethe earliest date of the edition youare referring to.

    e.g. if the information in the bookreads 1989 reprinted in 1990,1992, 1995, 1996, 2000 give1989.

    If it is not possible to ascertain thedate put the following: [n.d.] or[undated] or [no date].

    (iii) Title

    The title should be copied from theitem itself if possible and should be

    in italics. If there is no title on theitem you may need to invent adescriptive title. In this case youshould put it in square brackets [ ].

    (iv) Edition

    If there are different editions of thework you should give details of

    which edition you are using. e.g 3rded

    (v) Place

    Where appropriate you shouldinclude the place where the itemwas published.

    e.g. New Delhi (India)

    If there is more than one place of publication given choose the firstone.

    e.g. for Paris, New York,London give Paris

    (vi) Publisher

    If the item is published give thename of the publisher as it appearson the item.

    e.g Sultan Chand & Sons

    If the item is unpublished it may stillbe possible to give the name of thebody responsible for issuing thework.

    Information about a book should, if possible, be taken from the titlepage and the back of the title page.

    Popular serials e.g. Business World,are usually called magazines but

    A web page should be treatedsimilarly to a print work in that itmay have an author or editor and atitle.     and also include the date on whichyou viewed the page.
