The nominating committee has done a great job of bringing us an impressive slate. Now your task comes this month. VOTE! Look for the candidates’ statements on 4-6 and see who best represents your interests. Six members are vying for four positions on the Board. Ballots will be posted on-line September

15. For those of you without email, ballots will be sent via snail mail. You must vote (or have your ballot postmarked) no later than 11:59 PM on October 1st. Will there be an SOS entry in the 2015 Parade of Lights (POL)? The head elf for 22 years and his able assistant have retired from organizing, developing, executing and running the SOS POL boat. Christmas isn’t that far away and a volunteer must step forward now to lead the effort and a skipper must volunteer the use of his/her boat. This event provides great visibility for SOS and everyone enjoys cheering on our entry. Contact Doug Gage at [email protected] to volunteer. The fall sailing season is being kicked off by the Appetizers and Desserts raft-up in Langford Creek off the Chester River on September 12-13. This is always a particularly fun event. The Cruising Committee has planned jam-packed sailing schedule so sign up now and don’t get left behind. A special thank you to the Nominating Committee! Debra Roane, Ed Petersohn and Laura Gwinn did an outstanding job recruiting six candidates. Once again the Seafood Feast was a resounding success with plenty of crabs, shrimp and other goodies and a great new band, which was recommended by John Ihnat. Robyn Stewart was the event manager and Bob Lucas worked overtime getting the facility set-up and cleaned-up. Thank you! How could we have Town Hall meeting without Debbie Goldberg to ensure that we were properly fed? In addition, Harry Keith and Bob Lucas were instrumental in handling all the other details of hosting an SOS function. Kudos to you all! Ann Ashton single-handedly organized a double-header cruise in Maine. Week one was a group of 40 members aboard the schooner Victory Chimes and the second week was five bareboats. Great job, Ann! I’m off to Maine to join the other bareboaters, so I will see you at the Appetizers and Desserts Cruise!

See you on the water ,Hope

Hope Andruss

For those of you who are new to SOS, I am your current Commodore. An SOS member since 1989, my previous

activities in the club have included being a member of the Board of Directors, serving as Secretary and Vice Commodore and liaison to various committees, member and chairman of the Education Committee, and chairman of Spring Training. Prior to being elected to the Board two years ago, I served as coordinator/event manager/speaker of numerous social, education and cruising functions. Outside of SOS I have had broad experience in leading volunteer organizations as a committee or board member of a number of sailing, social, service and alumni organizations. I learned to sail in grade school in an Opti and have been an avid Chesapeake Bay sailor since the early 1980s. Seventeen years ago another SOS member and I bought Celebration together. So I have been an SOS Bay skipper since and have hosted many of you on my boat for fun-filled weekends. I am also frequently skipper on the Club’s bareboat cruises. Over the years I have developed many great friends and had experiences – both SOS organized and personal - that would not have happened if I hadn’t been active in the club. Why run for the SOS Board again? In the coming year, I would focus the SOS’s management of membership recruitment and retention, as well as increasing the club’s use of various Internet capabilities to enhance our operations. My prior experiences from SOS and other volunteer organizations will be valuable to developing these areas as a Board member. I am looking forward to serving you, the members, for another two years. Thank you for your support and vote.

My Arnold imitation at the town hall meeting might have sounded a bit rusty (some say contrived), but I am definitely happy to be back. I come with a long SOS resume (too lengthy to share here) that started in the Education committee with Hope and most recently concluded as a highly paid (I like to say that, but it just isn’t so) hit man consultant working on the Spring Training program. In between I breathed (and coughed a bit) on the rarified air from the top of the SOS mountain! The past decade has presented challenges to me, but I’ve always tried to keep my finger in the SOS pie. During the hiatus, I expanded my knowledge and experience in the not-for-profit association world as the Research Director of a 138,000 member association (a worthy goal for our own membership committee!). The problems SOS faces are different from a decade ago and require new thinking and solutions. We need to combine what worked well in the past with innovative approaches for today. It’s not going to be easy, but bear in mind that negativism is a always a no-no. The mundane is easy but the impossible requires a bit of sweat, and there is nothing we cannot accomplish if we work together! Let’s sweat!!!

Darlene Frieman I have been a member of SOS for 3 ½ years. Currently, I am the Membership Committee Chair and am now running for SOS Board. As Chair, I receive contact information regarding new members and skippers, send out new member packets and answer questions, write a monthly report to the Board, and attend the Board meetings. If elected, I would work with the Board to develop a system where each new member/skipper passes through “the gates” of welcoming SOS members, is asked out to a Happy Hour, a member(s) meets with the new member to go over the new membership packet, then has them signed up for training, etc., etc. The Skippers would take the new Skipper through a similar system. I would also run the numbers to see how many new members signed up in the past 3 years, how many are still around, how many are active, and who dropped out and why. My goal is to develop a check off list for new members from day one through their 1st sail. I am a native Marylander who grew up around boats as my father was in the boat business since the 60s. We were always on the water. After working at Westinghouse Oceanic Division at the Bay Bridge, the Anne Arundel County Council, and a law firm in Annapolis, I decided to work for my father’s company, Coastal Marine. I sold boat trailers and trailer parts wholesale to boat dealerships throughout Maryland and Virginia. I hauled trailers everywhere to be delivered or to be shown at the Richmond Boat Show or the Annapolis Boat Show (power and sail). It was in the early 80s when I learned to sail a 27’ Stiletto Catamaran on the Severn River. After that, I sailed many times throughout the American and British Virgin Islands, as well as the West Indies – Tortola down to Union Island. When I married, my husband had a 28’ power boat which we took up through the Intracoastal Waterway from Annapolis to New Jersey, and back to Havre de Grace and then down to Solomons. Since we docked our boat at our house, we would be out on the water every chance we could, weather permitting.

Janet Gonski After 9 years in SOS, I am running for the Board now as I have time and ability to give what I believe the position and responsibility deserve. I’d like to share my thoughts through five key words.

First: Listen -- without judgment, yet honoring the traditions and procedures that have kept SOS going. I’ve sailed with a variety of skippers, assisted at coordinations, done registration at town halls, spring trainings, social events … read Board minutes and I listen well to those who have celebrations and concerns. Second: Voice -- I am willing to use my voice, ideas, and beliefs to create change that benefits. Volunteering as the Annapolis Area Fireside Chat organizer as a co-chair, we noted some concerns with the paperwork and forms. The next year when we were in charge of all the area chats, we (with approval) modified the forms to state the role or position that was to receive each paper as well as who held that role the particular year. In addition, we heard from the Montgomery County /Bethesda people who wanted chats more accessible to them so we created and supported a series in that area. Other years as I volunteered, first assisting and then in charge of, Spring Training registration we worked with the data person to create a smooth system. Each time, I used my voice to create change that benefits. Third thought: Represent -- What is it that works? Doesn’t work? What are your suggestions for improvement? I want to represent your thoughts and ideas – I’ve wondered why it’s so easy to find fireside chat hosts, yet hard to find coordinators. We see each year that Spring Training has value to over 300 people, yet it is a challenge to staff. How will we keep what’s good and encourage more support? I won’t know unless I make it comfortable to contact me. (cont. Page 6)

Fourth: Synthesize -- My job experience has given me much practice in listening to all elements and bringing them together through ideas and suggestions. To honor what works so well in SOS where we have a club continuously hundreds of members strong, and meet the needs of current skippers and their boats as well as current club members I believe we need synthesis as a skill. And fifth: Transparency -- I’m not afraid to ask and seek understanding. There have been times people felt that there was “movement behind the scenes” and the reactions lead to frustration and negativity. If you know and can count on the belief that we will be transparent then it diminishes that sense and encourages and strengthens our sense of community. After all we are a community of sailors with a love of Nature and the Chesapeake and membership in a club that gives us access to enjoy and share that. So, perhaps, my goal for being on the SOS board is contained in 5 words and a phrase: open communication.

Laura Gwinn

When I joined SOS 9 years ago, little did I know that I would be joining a community that would become my friends and my mentors in my journey to becoming a sailor. I have tried to give back by skippering, teaching others, participating as faculty/panel member in Spring Training, and as chair of Skipper's Advisory. Becoming a Board member continues that journey. While on the nominating committee, as I was calling people, many of whom had no desire to serve or were too busy, it seemed almost hypocritical to ask others to serve when I had not (look out, in 3 years when I call to ask you to run for BOD). Therefore, I decided to run. As chair of Skipper's Advisory, I gave skippers a voice. They were consulted on many issues and often there were lively debates on

SkippersNet. Important issues were put to a vote, and a tally of the voting sent to the skippers. I re-instituted twice yearly skippers meetings and rejuvenated the mentoring program. As a member of the Board of Directors I hope to maintain that same availability and transparency. Members should be aware of what the Board is doing; they should be able to contact a Board member any time (well, maybe not after 9:30PM!) to discuss issues of concern. My career as a trial attorney honed my skills in listening and actually hearing what someone has to say; it enabled me to learn to build consensus, but to also play devil's advocate -- to take apart an issue, examine it from many sides, make sure all the facts are available for making a decision. These are all skills necessary for a successful Board member.

I hope to help move this Club forward, to prepare for the future. It is time to quit saying "But we've always done it this way" and to start saying "How can we make this work?" I'm Laura Gwinn and I approve of this message.

Jim Randall

I am honored to be nominated for the board of directors. It means more to me than just a position on the board, it means that I can give back to the club some of the pleasure I have experienced. I have been a member of the club since the early eighties and have been a skipper and worked on several committees. I try to volunteer to do something at the events and meetings that I attend just to give back. As for experience in sailing, my uncle built me my first sailboat when I was eight years old and I have been sailing and owning boats ever since. While living in Scandinavia, I lived on and sailed the Baltic and the North Sea in my wooden 57 foot cutter. I would like see a SOS bareboat in the Baltic in the summer where you can sail 22 hours a day in sunlight. In the States I skippered a 65 foot Catamaran and sailed it to St Croix so it could be used in the charter fleet. If elected, I would help find solutions within the framework of our by-laws to help the skippers, committee chairs and members attain their goals for a bigger and better club.

NO THANKSGIVING DINNERS? OR YES THANKSGIVING DINNERS!

IF we are going to have Regional Thanksgiving Dinners on November 21, we need volunteers to host the dinners. These gatherings are always a great feast with good fun. If you have not participated, here is how it works. The host/ess decides: how many to host, the start time, coordinates what dish the guest will bring. At the door, the guests will contribute $15 to the hostess who receives the total amount of the contributions to cover the cost of beverages, tableware, decorations, turkey, and so on. The host will decide if the money is to be paid in advance or at the door. There is no registering on the web site. The guests register through Kitty St. Romain who will coordinate guest list with the hosts. The hosts will invite the guests. These lucky people will contribute a small donation at the door, bring a dish and help tidy up. It couldn’t be easier or more fun. You may have wanted to contribute to SOS activities but due to a lack of time, have not done so. This is the perfect opportunity to take on a limited but fun event. If you want to host or have a question about the experience, contact Kitty St. Romain by September 20 but now is BETTER! [email protected] or 410-353-8119

SOS Chesapeake Cruising By Mike Pittinger, Cruising Chair

Peggy Green, Jim Huber, and Matt Flanagan

The sailing season is happening all around us. You are now staring fall in the face, get out and sail! Sign up early, and enjoy the fall sailing. It doesn’t matter what year it is, or who is Cruising Chair, the real rubber meets the road with the coordinators. They are the ones who “put it all together” so we can cruise with friends, and yet to be friends. Please thank a coordinator near you! As I sit here wondering when the repairs on Ariosa will be complete I can’t help but wonder what will be needed next to keep her sailing well for the years to come. We don’t have the luxury of just having something repaired or refurbished as we age. Yeah, I know some new parts are available, but we all avoid those unless really needed. This month’s topic is about sailing with loss of mobility, balance, or strength. Normally I address something that has happened, and make a couple of points about it to reinforce the policies or rules of the club. This month it’s a bit different, because it’s not MY perspective that we will be seeing but a long time member’s perspective. He and a skipper had a quiet, thoughtful sit down after a day of sailing. The conversation worked the way it was supposed to work between the skipper and the crew. The issue was discussed and everyone talked in reserved tones and then they brought the issue to “Us”. “Us” being Safety, Cruising, and Skippers Advisory, and First Mates Advisory. I took the lead after discussion with Safety since I was brought into the discussion first, but it is a team effort. We have issues with mobility and balance as we get older and although the mind was willing, the member just could not do some of the tasks that needed to be done that day as crew. We are now reviewing the comments and recommendations of the skipper and the very nice write up of the First Mate Emeritus that was crew. We have some good recommendations, from diverse perspectives, an experienced safety driven skipper, and an experienced safety conscious First Mate Emeritus. These discussions have yielded a few notable considerations. 1. Perhaps its time for you to wear a life jacket or

inflatable while on the vessel if you can’t swim, can’t swim well, or have balance issues. This might also be considered if you are on the dock and have those issues together.

2. In addition to skill level, coordinators are instructed to let skippers know if a crew member has any physical limitations when they are offered crew.

NOTE: In each member's online profile there is a data element, Physical Limitations, where anything that would prevent one from serving as capable crew can be noted; this will show up automatically every time a member registers for a cruising event. If a member lists physical limitations in the Comment area of the online Registration Form, it must be done every time one registers.

3. Skippers need to tell coordination if they have a vessel that supports physical limitations of our “getting older” sailing community.

These are just a few of the recommendations talked about, and they are being discussed in a very open forum. Skippers have been asked for input, first mates have been queried, Safety, Cruising, Skippers and First Mates are all involved in reviewing our policies and procedures and offering suggestions, comments, and review. Each area has stepped up and I have been coordinating the responses. Later this fall, we will have a better picture of how we are addressing this issue and what we can do better, and what we should not do. It takes some time to pull it all together. If we have policy or procedural changes we will implement them after open discussion and the appropriate review cycle. Later we will publish whatever our findings are as we consider this a safety and a cruising issue. There will be a period for open discussion and club comment. If our findings require a board action then we will present the specific action along with the final report to them. Most issues are kept very quiet since the individuals desire it that way. In this case the individuals stepped up as a Skipper and First Mate should and started the ball rolling to fix a current and future issue.

Bareboat Skipper Certification Sandy Rosswork, Bareboat Chair

Several Mediterranean countries have had certification requirements for skippers for years. More recently, all of the countries (with the current exception of Italy) have begun to add and to enforce the requirements, so the charter companies must also comply. As an example, Turkey, a non EU country, has within the past 2 years adopted the same requirements.

Currently, these countries require skippers to have a sailing license approved in their country of origin, the International Proficiency Certificate, or ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising Course. In order to take or challenge ASA 104, one must also take or challenge ASA 101 and ASA 103. Italy has allowed skippers whose countries of origin do not require such certification to charter without it. This may or may not continue.

Pete Stogis is a qualified ASA instructor. He can administer the 3 exams (ASA 101, 103, and 104) to experienced sailors in a one day course. There are costs involved, but they are minimal: Texts are $23 each, exams are $10 each, and you must join ASA for one year at $45. If you want the Inter-national Proficiency Certificate (IPC), that's $59. Call Pete directly to arrange for this procedure. Pete is not charging for his time! Thanks Pete! Contact him at 301-680-0864 or at [email protected]. THE NEXT COURSE – SEPTEMBER 12!

SOS BAREBOAT CRUISE

SEPTEMBER 2016 If you are seeking a sailing vacation that’s packed with terrific conditions, beautiful landscapes, historically significant ancient ruins, secluded islands, vibrant nightlife, warm culture and terrific cuisine – Greece is the place!

Located on the southern end of mainland Greece, Marina Zea is perfectly situated for an exhilarating sailing vacation through the wondrous Saronic Gulf. This cruising ground provides travelers with a wealth of opportunities to

experience Grecian culture through ancient ruins, towering landscapes, and decadent cuisine. Explore vibrant islands like Poros and Hydra or kick back on Cape Sounion Bay – the choices are as limitless as your imagination.

A Marina Zea sailing vacation in the Saronic Gulf features shorter passages and well-protected, relatively flat wind and waters. SOS is planning a one-week SOS bareboat cruise from Saturday, September 10 to Saturday, September 17, 2016. We are making hotel reservations for everyone on the cruise for Friday, September 9, 2016 in Athens at a hotel near the Marina Zea. The one-night cost of the room (double occupancy) is included in your estimated cruise cost. The cost of this 7-day Athens cruise is $1,550 for members and $1,600 for non-members. The cost for a 7-day 4600 Club Catamaran cruise is $1,800 for members and $1,850 for non-members. Some members may extend the cruise to 14 days, 9/10/2016 to 9/24/2016, at a cost from Sun Sail of $2,300, or $2,350 for non-members. Airfare to and from Athens, provisioning for the boat, and local transportation to the Marina Zea are NOT included. To learn more about this great opportunity to cruise this beautiful part of the world, go on the SOS website to Bareboat Cruising and fill-out your application and waiver for the Athens September 2016 SOS Bareboat Cruise. For more information email Alex Daly at [email protected].

AMAZING SAILING OPPORTUNITY

By Sandy Huberfeld An amazing sailing opportunity strikes once a year. Visualize being out on a sailboat in the Bay and enjoying a beautiful sail on a refreshing September day. Imagine while sailing you are also able to contribute to an incredibly important charitable organization. Does it sound impossible? It is not. Most of us have either been touched by, will be touched by, or know someone that has been assisted by Hospice. Hospice assists with emotional and spiritual support not just for terminal patients but also for their loved ones. This year’s Hospice Cup Race will be on September 19.t.h It is a fund raising event for local Hospice Chapters. Not a racer? No worries. Hospice Cup offers a unique race opportunity for people who sail but do not usually race. No spinnakers are involved. This is an opportunity to give back and enjoy a day with friends and have fun. Cruiser or racer, plan on participating. Look for more details regarding the Race and phenomenal after party in the July Whisker Pole. In the meanwhile if you have questions, contact Dennis Krizek, [email protected] or check out the Hospice Cup web page http://www.hospicecup.org.

Travel and Adventure Wanderers Joan and Pete Stogis returned in July from three weeks in Norway. They spent the first week on a small ship that prowled around the Svalbard island group and were able to reach 80-45 N before the ice pack closed in. Polar Bears, Walrus, Blue and Fin whales and seals were added to the life list. The next two weeks were spent on an architectural tour (Joan's former career) of Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger. Norwegians love to build tunnels, even under fjords. There are 40 between Oslo and Bergen, one 12 miles long. Sailboats and marinas are plentiful close to the Arctic Circle. The Gulf Stream allows a surprisingly long boating season. Norway is also Tesla heaven due to government subsidies for electric vehicles. Another great fishing trip to Alaska for Zonia Action. It is nice to fish with the wildlife in the area--humpback whales, dolphins, otters, and seals. See photos below of her catch.

Milestones and Celebrations Congratulations to Commodore Hope Andruss, Dave Tuttle, Dean Collins, George Hollendusky, Tom Wiltshire, Mary McClellan, Harry King and Peter Breit for completing the ASA Certification Clinic. They now have the "licenses" that meet the new chartering requirements for the Mediterranean and other countries.

This is a typical day's catch. Halibut is the white fish with a one per day limit. The silver fish are various types of

salmon. The small dark fish and the orange fish are rockfish, no relation to the rockfish we know on the bay.
