Feedback from the Parent Night on Resilience and Self-Esteem facilitated by Maggie Dent on Tuesday evening has been very positive. While 248 booked online the headcount on the night was 175, with quite a few families attending from neighbouring schools. With 595 families in our school it is a shame that more families did not avail themselves of the opportunity to attend and thereby reflect on and refine their parenting skills. Very few schools provide evenings like this facilitated by such high quality presenters. Our Year 2 families are celebrating their Year Level Mass at all parish masses this weekend. We hope all families are able to attend. A Year 4 family iPad Bootcamp has been scheduled for next Tuesday 16 th and Thursday 18 th June from 6:30-8:30pm to support parents in assisting their child with the introduction of these wireless devices as part of the online learning environment. Prep families are being inducted into the Parish Sacramental Program model at a Baptism Family Activity Night next Wednesday 17th June with sessions running from 5-6pm and 6:30-7:30pm. The gala event of our 50 th Anniversary celebrations is our Golden Jubilee Dinner Dance to be held at Rossdale Golf Course Clubhouse next Friday 20 th June starting at 7pm. This event is sold out with 300 people attending. We will launch our unique and innovative contemporary history of St Louis Parish and School through the lens of story- telling “A story of Community, Culture + Worship”, which goes on sale for the very reasonable price of $25, available in both hardcopy and also as an e-book. With a first edition batch of only 300 printed, you will need to get in quick to buy your hardcopy, otherwise you will have to place an order and go on a waiting list for a 2 nd edition reprint. Families who have not yet booked a time for their Student Progress Report Conference are reminded that online bookings close on Sunday 21 st June at 10pm. I wish to advise that we have recently appointed Mrs Tanya Brookes as replacement teacher for Ms Jussahra Treagus in 6TT who is officially going on Maternity Leave at the end of term, after having most of Term 2 off on sick leave due to pregnancy complications. We welcome Tanya to our staff and wish Jussahra all the best for the safe arrival of her second child. Finally, please note that school finishes at 1pm on Wednesday 24 th June for Student Report Conferences and that school will be closed on Thursday 25th and Friday 26 th June for a combined St Louis and St Brigid’s School and Parish Staff Spirituality Conference. St Louis de Montfort and St Brigid’s

Staff Conference

‘Nurturing The Soul,

Standing On Holy Ground’

Thursday 25th – Friday 26th June 2015

Foothills Conference Centre, Mooroolbark

In the beginning, Creator, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands (Hebrews 1:10 NIV)

The last two days of term are designated closure days for staff professional learning. Our parish schools of St Louis and St Brigid’s will come together offsite for these two days, further developing relationships between our schools and participating in a spirituality conference. Both schools have gathered together already to begin their journey and we look forward to sharing two fruitful days in partnership. We will explore insights which may shed light on our understanding of the mystery of the Divine. Aims:

To deepen our adult faith

To re-frame our responses to the big questions in life

To bring modern science into conversation with our religious tradition

To explore our understanding of the nature of God in this context

To enhance staff wellbeing

To provide staff with an opportunity to interact and socialise.

3LM Garden to Kitchen

To coincide with our Inquiry unit ‘Is it Living?’ 3LM has been participating in the

Garden to Kitchen program throughout Term 2. During the program students are

provided with the knowledge and skills that lead to healthy and environmentally

sustainable lifestyle choices. Students learnt about the environment, hot houses and

their purpose, how to maintain a garden space, how to care for livestock, how to

grow and care for food, watering, compost care, healthy foods, good nutrition and

food preparation, through an active and hands on experience that develops a strong

connection to the earth and their community.

“Yesterday it was 14 degrees outside and 17 degrees inside the hothouse. That is a difference of 3 degrees. Yesterday it was our last garden session. I have enjoyed planting, cooking, having animal time and making hot houses over the garden beds.” Ollie

“When we arrive at gardening we sit on the tyres and Frank tells us what the temperature is on that day and what we will be doing. My favourite thing I have done is digging up dirt.” Kaden

“On this day Sandy told us that we were going to measure the garden beds and stick piping in the soil so that hoses could go into them to make hot houses.” Alice

“In this photo we are making a frame for a hot house. We had to put pipes in the soil. We had to measure a metre between each pipe before putting the pipes in the soil.” Loic and Jordan

“Here we are planting spinach in the garden beds. We had to take the spinach out of their pots and gently break them into sections before planting.” Achilles

“We used chalk to number the garden beds and we also marked where the metre point was so we knew where to put the pipes in for the hot houses.” Matilda

“I put the pipes in at every 1 metre point. We had to dig holes to get the pipes in. I have enjoyed tasting yummy food and feeding the guinea pigs and rabbits in the garden this term.” Lucas

“In this photo we are placing hoses in pipes so we can put the plastic cover on later. Loic, Matilda, Ollie, Lucas, Piper, Alice and I worked together. I have enjoyed cooking and eating the muffins.” Marcus

“In this photo I was planting spinach. To plant the spinach I had to measure 30cm between plants. I have enjoyed cooking and tasting the arancini balls.” Finn H

“In this photo I was planting spinach in the garden beds. We had to dig holes about 20 cm deep into the dirt and compost. I have enjoyed cooking this term.” Isabel

‘In this photo we were making chicken food. Some of the ingredients were corn, wheat and shell grit. I’ve enjoyed helping out in the garden and being with the animals.” Kai

“Sas and I dug up the compost and put it in a tube in the spinach garden bed. We also put worms in the tube. I enjoyed picking up the worms because they felt slimy.” Shane

“In this photo we were learning about photosynthesis and what things need to grow. I have liked cooking, being with the animals and helping out in the garden.” Piper

“In this photo we are planting peas. We had to get a pea plant from the hot house and then dig a hole in the dirt. We had to squeeze the pot, and then turn it upside down to get the pea plant out.” Ash

“Here we were planting the pigface which is a succulent. I have enjoyed cooking with Crispy Queen and helping Frank and Sandy.” Van

“Here we are holding Buckley. We fed the rabbits celery and combed their hair. We also played with the guinea pigs. Animal time has been our favourite thing about the Garden this term.” Meghna and Grace

“Here we were measuring the temperature of the soil in the garden beds. We used a thermometer and recorded the results on a sheet of paper.” Harry and Finn M

“In this photo we were making orange and poppy seed muffins and had to squeeze orange juice out of half an orange. When we ate them they were nice and fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. They were delicious.” Jasmine and Shania

“Here we are measuring 1 cup of flour with a measuring cup. We were making orange and poppy seed muffins. Digging up soil has been my favourite thing.” Dean

“Here I am making arancini balls. We used our hands to roll the balls. They tasted delicious. I enjoyed planting plants in the tyres.” Simon

“To make arancini balls we used parsley, chives, bacon, celery, rice and pumpkin. We cooked them in a saucepan that had hot oil in it. They were delicious and were very soft to touch.” Saskia and Liana
