(Yankton) SCOREBOARD AREA CALENDAR Press&Dakotan DAILY DOSE BY JEREMY HOECK [email protected] If last season was any indication, the Mount Marty College men’s basketball team is headed in the right direction. The Lancers reached the 10-win plateau for the first time since the 2005-06 team recorded 16 victories. Not only that, last year’s squad hosted — and won — its first ever post-season game in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). How have the Lancers progressed? This season, the Mount Marty men have raced out to a 5-3 start and a 2-2 record in the Great Plains Athletic Con- ference (GPAC). And, with six games remaining before Christmas, there’s a strong chance MMC could reach the 10-win mark be- fore the holiday. That would leave at least 14 games after the break to near the program’s best record in six years. So, again, how have the Lancers progressed? • First of all, they’ve avoided injury. Last year’s team lost three key players to injuries — Jeff Viereck, Austin Harms and Jeff Larsen. • Transfers. Senior point guard Mitch Ackelson, a transfer from NCAA Division II Missouri-St. Louis, leads the team in scoring (13.3), rebounding (9.4), assists (3.1) and steals (2.4). Ackelson pulled down 17 rebounds in Tuesday’s home win over York — proof that he’s a threat on both ends of the court. Fellow transfer Scott Odekirk has averaged 6.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, as well. The Lancers are at home Saturday at 4 p.m. against Midland (7-3, 3-1), a team receiving votes in the lastest NAIA top 25 poll. Lancer Men Headed In The Right Direction Daily opinions from the P&D Sports Staff on local and na- tional high school, college and professional sports. In women’s cross country, Augustana junior Molly Kokesh (Scotland) and Northern State sophomore Makayla Perryman (Dakota Dunes) were honored. Wayne State sophomore Brock DeVries (Jefferson) was selected in football. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade- point average of 3.2 or better. The student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his or her institution, and must have completed at least one full academic year at that institution. Lancer Womens’ JV Squad Wins At Briar Cliff SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Mount Marty College women’s basketball team used three players in double fig- ures to beat Briar Cliff 69-57 in junior varsity action Thurs- day. Tara Des Lauriers led MMC (4-2) with 16 points. Holly Hegge had 14 points and Sarah Crosgrove added 12 points in the win. White Edges Red In South Dakota Track Intersquad VERMILLION — The White scored earned a 143.5- 139.5 win over the Red in the South Dakota Track and Field’s Red vs. White Intersquad, which was held Thurs- day at the DakotaDome. Both teams captured 14 event wins on the day. The White edged the Red on the men’s side (75-70), while the Red narrowly topped the White in the women’s competition (69.5-68.5). The White was led by sophomore Jeff Mettler, who won the men’s 3,000 meters at 8:37.79 and the men’s 1- mile run at 4:27.67. Junior Ashley Sveum (Eau Claire, Wis.) won the women’s 400 meters (59.97) while junior Alexa Duling captured the women’ 60-meter hurdles. Sveum and Duling were also part of the winning women’s 4 x 400 relay, which included freshman J’Myah White ) and sophomore Anna Hyronimus. That relay posted a win- ning time of 4:04.36. The Red had three multi-event winners, led by fresh- man Analisa Huschle. Huschle won three women’s events, including the high jump at 5-4 ¼, the long jump at 17-8 ¾ and the triple jump at 36-11. Junior Carol Miller added a pair of wins, capturing the women’s 3,000 meters (10:43.52) and the women’s 1-mile (5:25.25). Senior Jared Clement won two events for the Red. He captured the men’s 60 meters at 7.05 and added a win in the men’s 200 at 22.89. Clement was also part of the winning 4 x 400 relay. South Dakota’s teams open the 2012 regular season on Jan. 14 at home with the annual Alumni Meet. DWU Football Coach Resigns MITCHELL (AP) — Dakota Wesleyan University is looking for a new head football coach after Brad Pole re- signed from the position. DWU Athletic Director Curt Hart announced Pole’s res- ignation Thursday. Hart says a new committee will be formed to start a search for Pole’s replacement. Defen- sive coordinator Ross Cimpl will be the acting head coach in the interim. Pole’s resignation comes after the Tiger’s 6-4 season this year. The team started the season 5-0 but slid to 1-4 in the second half of the season. Two of those losses came by a combined total of seven points. Pole coached at Dakota Wesleyan for seven seasons. In a statement, Hart thanked Pole for his time at the university and wished him luck in the future. All SD Amateur Baseball Teams To Use Wooden Bats MADISON (AP) — All amateur baseball teams in South Dakota will use wooden bats beginning next year. KJAM radio reports that state commissioners approved the move during their fall meeting last month. The deci- sion came after a survey of team managers around the state showed the majority favored going to wooden bats. Class A amateur teams have already been playing ex- clusively with wooden bats. Class B teams have had the option of using aluminum bats, and most do. Many baseball leagues around the country have been going to wooden bats in recent years, for reasons that in- clude tradition and safety. NDSU Team Bus Collides With Car, No One Hurt FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota State women’s basketball coach Carolyn DeHoff says no one was hurt when the team’s bus collided with a vehicle in Des Moines, Iowa. DeHoff tells The Fargo Forum newspaper that the right front tire on the bus struck a car carrying two women Wednesday night near the team’s hotel. DeHoff says she called 911 and emergency officials responded within min- utes. She says everyone involved is fine. The Bison played Drake on Thursday night. Ganious From Page 8A “My biggest thing is getting to know each kid as a human being, not just a player. It’s a journey to- gether with each one, so that’s what I look forward to the most.” When it came time to discuss football with his new players, the excitement Glenn showed at his introductory press conference flowed to the team, Powell said. “As he was talking, the guys were getting excited hearing what he wants us to do,” Powell said. “He talked about his expec- tations of winning the Missouri Valley and getting us to the play- offs. We need to work every day toward that goal. “The guys are already pumped up for the season. Everyone’s ready to go right now.” The journey for Glenn doesn’t start next fall, it starts now, with assembling a coaching staff and recruiting for the 2012 class. First things first, putting to- gether a staff of assistants. Though he didn’t reveal any specifics, Glenn said one of his tasks will be finding a full-time defensive coordinator. “We’ll hopefully finalize that soon,” he said. “We’ll keep some of the guys and then finalize a de- fensive coordinator. I’ll get with him and compare notes — his list of guys and my list of guys we want. The one move Glenn specifi- cally mentioned was the promo- tion of offensive coordinator Wes Beschorner to associate head coach and O.C. Beschorner has been a USD assistant for six sea- sons, the last three in charge of the offense — he was also the in- terim head coach after Ed Meierkort was fired on Nov. 22. Secondly, between today (Fri- day) and National Signing Day for high school recruits on Feb. 1, 2012, Glenn and his staff have 55 days of recruiting. Naturally, there’s some ground to be made up. “If you lose even a week, you’re out of sync,” Glenn said. “We’re fighting to get back into homes and to get visit from kids. It’s a very competitive business; we’ve got our work cut out for us.” On the issue of recruiting, Powell said the announcement of Glenn as head coach will “defi- nitely help” in attracting players to come to USD. “Kids in high school, a lot of times, decide on programs by the coaches alone. They look for people who achieved greatness; won in the past,” Powell said. “Coach Glenn has all those attrib- utes. He’s just a people person in general, so he’ll be able to go into a kid’s house and convince him. “I’m excited to see who he gets in.” Asked about being the head coach at a place he was once a student, player and later an as- sistant coach in 1974, Glenn an- swered without hesitation that he’s anxious for football to start next fall. “It’s exhilarating to realize that I’ve come full circle,” he said. “I’m totally honored to be here. I just want to give back to my university and bring it a win- ning program.” n e n e Newspapers In Education Holiday Greeting Cards designed by local children to support Newspapers In Education Purchase Share the warmth of the holidays with these unique full color cards! $ 12 oo for a package of 12 tax included These wonderful cards can be purchased during business hours at 319 Walnut, Yankton, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm or call 665-7811, 1-800-743-2968 PRESS&DAKOTAN YANKTON DAILY Glenn From Page 8A • Help Build Credit • No Checking account required $ 100 to $ 3000 CONVENIENT LOAN 1818 Broadway Suite D-1, Yankton, SD 57078 605-665-1640 NEED Fast Cash... If last season was any indication, the Mount Marty College men’s basketball team is headed in the right direction. The Lancers reached the 10-win plateau for the first time since the 2005-06 team recorded 16 victories. Not only

that, last year’s squad hosted — and won — its first ever post-season game in the Great Plains Athletic Conference(GPAC).

How have the Lancers progressed? This season, the Mount Marty men have raced out to a 5-3 start and a 2-2 record in the Great Plains Athletic Con-

ference (GPAC).

And, with six games remaining before Christmas, there’s a strong chance MMC could reach the 10-win mark be-fore the holiday. That would leave at least 14 games after the break to near the program’s best record in six years.

So, again, how have the Lancers progressed?• First of all, they’ve avoided injury. Last year’s team lost three key players to injuries — Jeff Viereck, Austin Harms

and Jeff Larsen.• Transfers. Senior point guard Mitch Ackelson, a transfer from NCAA Division II Missouri-St. Louis, leads the team

in scoring (13.3), rebounding (9.4), assists (3.1) and steals (2.4). Ackelson pulled down 17 rebounds in Tuesday’s homewin over York — proof that he’s a threat on both ends of the court. Fellow transfer Scott Odekirk has averaged 6.0points and 4.1 rebounds per game, as well.

The Lancers are at home Saturday at 4 p.m. against Midland (7-3, 3-1), a team receiving votes in the lastest NAIAtop 25 poll.

All SD Amateur Baseball TeamsTo Use Wooden Bats

MADISON (AP) — All amateur baseball teams in SouthDakota will use wooden bats beginning next year.

KJAM radio reports that state commissioners approvedthe move during their fall meeting last month. The deci-sion came after a survey of team managers around thestate showed the majority favored going to wooden bats.

Class A amateur teams have already been playing ex-clusively with wooden bats. Class B teams have had theoption of using aluminum bats, and most do.

Many baseball leagues around the country have beengoing to wooden bats in recent years, for reasons that in-clude tradition and safety.

“My biggest thing is getting toknow each kid as a human being, not just a player. It’s a journey to-gether with each one, so that’swhat I look forward to the most.”

When it came time to discussfootball with his new players, theexcitement Glenn showed at hisintroductory press conferenceflowed to the team, Powell said.

“As he was talking, the guyswere getting excited hearingwhat he wants us to do,” Powellsaid. “He talked about his expec-tations of winning the MissouriValley and getting us to the play-offs. We need to work every daytoward that goal.

“The guys are alreadypumped up for the season.Everyone’s ready to go rightnow.”

The journey for Glenn doesn’tstart next fall, it starts now, withassembling a coaching staff andrecruiting for the 2012 class.

First things first, putting to-gether a staff of assistants.Though he didn’t reveal anyspecifics, Glenn said one of histasks will be finding a full-timedefensive coordinator.

“We’ll hopefully finalize thatsoon,” he said. “We’ll keep someof the guys and then finalize a de-fensive coordinator. I’ll get withhim and compare notes — hislist of guys and my list of guys wewant.

The one move Glenn specifi-cally mentioned was the promo-tion of offensive coordinator WesBeschorner to associate head

coach and O.C. Beschorner hasbeen a USD assistant for six sea-sons, the last three in charge ofthe offense — he was also the in-terim head coach after EdMeierkort was fired on Nov. 22.

Secondly, between today (Fri-day) and National Signing Day forhigh school recruits on Feb. 1,2012, Glenn and his staff have 55days of recruiting. Naturally, there’s some ground to be madeup.

“If you lose even a week, you’re out of sync,” Glenn said.“We’re fighting to get back intohomes and to get visit from kids. It’s a very competitive business;we’ve got our work cut out forus.”

On the issue of recruiting,Powell said the announcement ofGlenn as head coach will “defi-nitely help” in attracting playersto come to USD.

“Kids in high school, a lot oftimes, decide on programs by thecoaches alone. They look forpeople who achieved greatness;won in the past,” Powell said.“Coach Glenn has all those attrib-utes. He’s just a people person ingeneral, so he’ll be able to gointo a kid’s house and convincehim.

“I’m excited to see who hegets in.”

Asked about being the headcoach at a place he was once astudent, player and later an as-sistant coach in 1974, Glenn an-swered without hesitation thathe’s anxious for football to startnext fall.

“It’s exhilarating to realizethat I’ve come full circle,” hesaid. “I’m totally honored to behere. I just want to give back tomy university and bring it a win-ning program.”
