Boys’ Champions, MVPs

Tickets for the 32st annual Westerly Com-munity Credit Union Holiday Basketball Tour-nament at Westerly High’s Federico Gym are $4 for adults and $3 for students.

Varsity and junior varsity boys’ and girls’ teams from Stonington, Westerly, Chariho and South Kingstown will be playing.

The tickets are good for all junior varsity and varsity games played that day. All tourna-ment proceeds benefit the sports boosters of the participating schools. Since its inception in 1984 the WCCU has donated $193,901.30 to participating schools.

An all-tournament team consisting of five players and a most valuable player are se-lected for the varsity and junior varsity tourna-ments. The boys’ varsity MVP award is named for the late Mark Mitchell, who played in the tournament’s early years as a Stonington High

player. He later coached the Stonington ju-nior varsity.

The credit union honors the late Bob Bewlay each year by giving a sportsmanship award to a player in the varsity boys’ competition. Bew-lay worked at the credit union for 34 years. A separate sportsmanship award is given to a player in the varsity girls’ tournament.

The tournament begins this year on Satur-day, Dec. 26 and concludes on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Games will not be played on Sun-day, Dec. 27.

Two junior varsity games and two varsity games are played each day.

Westerly is the defending boys’ champion and Stonington won the girls’ title last season.

Westerly has won the most boys’ champi-onships with 13, while Stonington has claimed the girls’ title 17 times.

WESTERLY — It’s the grand dames of the 32nd annual Westerly Community Credit Union Holiday Basketball Tournament against the new kids on the block when Stonington plays South Kingstown 8 p.m. Dec. 26 in the girls’ basketball opening-round nightcap.

While Stonington has won a record 17 WCCU titles, South Kingstown makes its debut in the tournament. The Rebels, who play in RIIL Divi-sion I, replace longtime participant Exeter-West Greenwich.

The WCCU basketball committee decided to replace the Scarlet Knights, who could not com-mit to fielding a junior varsity team this year. A year ago, EWG was uncompetitive in the var-sity tournament and did not field a team in the JV tourney.

South Kingstown, 6-12 last season, was happy to fill the vacancy despite already playing in the North Kingstown Tournament in recent seasons.

The Stonington-South Kingstown matchup features two of the tournament’s top individual standouts.

Stonington senior Tatyana LaFrance Boyce, a 5-8 shooting guard, averaged more than 19 points a game last year and came into this year as Stonington’s No. 3 all-time leading scorer with 1,175 points.

South Kingstown senior Celia Tomlinson, a 5-11 forward, made the Providence Journal All-State second team as a junior. She heads an experienced group of Rebels, including se-

nior guard Maddie West, for third-year coach Amanda Verone.

“We didn’t lose anyone from last season when we were rebuilding from scratch,” Verone said. “Things were rough at the beginning of the year because we lacked game experience to get over the hump. Toward the end, we grew up quite a bit and were in every game.”

Verone welcomes the new challenge of play-ing in this tournament and facing a respected yet uncharted opponent in Stonington. The Rebels, who finished eighth in the 10-team Divi-sion I, won their playoff opener last year before losing in the quarterfinals to No. 1 and eventual champ Barrington, 53-41.

“It’s a different challenge for us to play Ston-ington,” Verone said. “They have a lot of tradi-tion. We’re as excited to play them as we are being part of the tradition of the tournament. This tournament has a different feel and a differ-ent vibe than what we’ve been used to.”

The Stonington-South Kingstown winner ad-vances to the championship Dec. 30 at 8 p.m. The Dec. 26 losers meet in the varsity consola-tion game Dec. 29 at 6:15 p.m.

Stonington coach Paulla Solar likes playing in the WCCU tournament, partially because she favors using a 30-second shot clock under Rhode Island rules. There is no shot clock in Connecticut games.

“We enjoy the tournament,” Solar said. “There is always a great atmosphere with a large crowd and alumni coming back for the holidays. We

WESTERLY — Just like its soccer counter-part, the Chariho High girls’ basketball team would like nothing better than to end a long losing streak to Westerly when the WCCU Holiday Basketball Tournament tips off on Dec. 26.

In the fall, the girls’ soccer team beat West-erly, 1-0, on Sept. 21 to end a six-game losing streak to the Bulldogs.

But the basketball streak is much longer. Chariho has lost its last 20 games to the Bull-dogs. The last victory came in the 2005-06 season.

The two teams play on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. in the opening varsity game. Stonington and tournament newcomer South Kingstown follow.

“They know we haven’t beaten then in a while,” said Chargers coach Arianna Dolock, who played for Chariho. “They are very ex-cited and eager.”

The two teams did not play last year since Chariho was in Division II and the Bulldogs in Division I. They did not draw each other

in the opening round of last year’s holiday tournament.

“We definitely think this is one of the most even matchups we’ve had in the past years,” Dolock said. “We didn’t have an opportunity to play them last year and it was disappoint-ing. Anytime you play Westerly in any sport it is a big game.”

Chariho, which last won the tournament in 1991, opened the season with a 14-point loss to Division I Coventry.

Westerly, a Division I school, trounced Divi-sion III Narragansett in its opener.

Chariho senior guard Katie Cuddy scored 14 in the season-opener with four 3-pointers.

She was a second-team Division II-South selection last season. She is still recovering from a leg injury she suffered during the soc-cer season.

Dolock said Cuddy grew almost two inches from last season to 5-10.

“She gives them good leadership. With her size she can take you to the hoop, too,” said Westerly coach Sue Haik, who played at Westerly. “We have to try to match up with her

WESTERLY — Chariho High and Westerly High will need no introduction when they square off in the 32nd annual WCCU Holiday Basketball Tournament on Dec. 28 in the first round.

They have scrimmaged against each other and faced each other in the summer league. But Westerly coach Mike Gleason said that mat-ters little, especially after he watched Chariho earn a 12-point win against a good Division II Prout team earlier this season.

“They are big and that will present a challenge for us. Their size will bother us and they score in transition. They must have had 20-30 points against Prout in transition,” Gleason said. “They will do a lot of things we haven’t seen in a while. They present a whole new challenge.”

Chariho opened the season with a 12-point loss against Di-vision I Coventry before beat-ing the Crusaders.

Westerly is off to a 2-0 start, with wins against Division I North Kingstown and Division

III Ponaganset.Westerly returns a sec-

ond-team All-State player in guard Jacee Hamelin.

Hamelin can drive to the basket, shoot the 3-pointer and find open teammates. He had 23 points against NK, but managed just two against Ponaganset. He did hand out 12 assists in the victory against the Chieftains.

Taber Gates mans a wing spot for the Bulldogs. He hit the winning 3-pointer from well behind the arc in the fi-

nal 10 seconds against NK and followed that with 24 points against Ponaganset. He was the WCCU tournament MVP last year as a freshman.

“They have Jacee who can score and Gates is a good shooter. And their help de-fense is really good — they clog up the lane. And they have (Marc) Perry underneath. They have a lot of pieces,” Chariho coach Corey Downey said.

Westerly’s Taber Gates was the MVP of last year’s tournament. He scored 14 in Westerly’s first win of the season and hit the game-winning 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds.

WESTERLY — By the luck of the draw, a nice opportunity — a berth in the 32nd an-nual WCCU Holiday Tournament finals Dec. 30 — awaits the South Kingstown-Stonington winner in the opening round Dec. 28.

If you ranked the WCCU boys’ basketball tournament field based on last year’s record and returning personnel, Westerly (17-10 with four starters back) and Chariho (11-14 with three starters returning) are 1-2. Those neigh-boring rivals meet Dec. 28 at 6:15 p.m.in the opening round.

Stonington returns two starters from a 7-13 team last year. South Kingstown brings back one key regular from a 5-11 team. Stoning-ton and South Kingstown meet in the Dec. 28 nightcap at 8 p.m. at Federico Gym in Westerly.

“The tournament gives us a chance to play for something early and it is very well attended,” Stonington coach John Luzzi said. “Of course, our ECC schedule and goals to make the ECC and state tournaments remain our primary focus”

The Bears will have three games under their belt before the tournament begins. They are breaking in a young backcourt, includ-ing a freshman point guard and sophomore combo guard, sixth man Ben Dellacono, to mesh with 6-4 senior Amadi White, 6-3 junior Matt Schmeelk and senior swingman Robert Atkins.

White averaged 14 points and 11 re-bounds last season and will be counted on for increased production as the Bears must replace the 21-point a game scoring of Matt Donahue, who left after his junior year to en-roll in prep school. Schmeelk saw ample var-sity minutes as a sophomore and showed a knack for rebounding.

“Amadi looks strong and Matt worked very hard on his game in the off-season,” Luzzi said. “We look solid in the [center and power forward] position and will run most of our of-fense through them.”

Luzzi saw his first glimpse of South Kings-town last week.

“I know they play in Division I — the top league in Rhode Island,” Luzzi said. “I hear

points and 8.0 rebounds through the first two games.

Downey said Caleb King will draw the defen-sive assignment against Hamelin.

Beyond that, he didn’t want to give too much away about his defensive plans.

“Every game is different and you don’t want to get away from your sets,” Downey said.

Chariho has two good guards of its own in se-niors Nate Morin and Jake Beauregard.

Morin is averaging 18.5 points per contest over the first two games.

Morin was a Division III-South second-team selection last season.

Beauregard is averaging 5.0 assists per game and was a first-team Division III-South selection last season.

“They have a lot of leadership at the guard position and Ciringione and (Darin) Thibeault can play inside. Chariho is for real,” Gleason said.

Ciringione, who was the quarterback on the football team, is averaging 8.0 rebounds per game.

Downey said the game with Westerly is not a typical nonleague tournament contest.

“We are familiar with them. It’s definitely a challenge for us. We get up and will be excited. With the crowd there it’s impossible not to get

excited,” Downey said.Westerly is the defending champion and has

won the tournament three times in the last four years. The Bulldogs have won the title 13 times, more than any other team.

Chariho last won the tournament in 2008.Downey was the MVP of the 1994 tournament

when he played for Chariho.“I always remind them (his team) about that,”

Downey said.South Kingstown and Stonington will play in

the second game Monday. The consolation game is Wednesday at 6:15

p.m. followed by the title contest.“The best part about the tournament is the

fact that pretty much every year most teams that are in it have a chance to win it,” Gleason said. “It seems every year the championship game goes down to the buzzer.

“And you have a big unknown with South Kingstown. Anytime you bring a Division I team to town it’s an exciting thing.”

Gleason said the tournament is always a top priority for the Bulldogs.

“It’s one of the first things that is mentioned when we develop team goals,” Gleason said. “I have a really high opinion of Chariho and their team. If we don’t play our best game, we could leave Federico Gym with a loss.”

like facing top nonleague competition. South Kingstown plays in Division I, so expect a good game.”

The Bears return three starters from a 16-9 team that repeated as WCCU champs a year ago. One of the gradua-tion losses was 6-foot center Margot Calmar, the WCCU most outstanding player who amassed over 1,000 ca-

reer points and 1,000 career rebounds.

LaFrance Boyce joins ju-nior forward Cameron Dre-her (7 ppg) and sophomore guard Kate Hall (7 ppg) as returning starters from last season.

Halle Anderson, a 5-9 sophomore forward, and freshman Kate Johnson figure to see ample playing time for the Bears.

physically and try not to let her get to the spots where she likes to score.”

Westerly defeated Narra-gansett, 43-16, in the opener and senior Alyssa Valentini led the way with 14 points.

Valentini did not play her ju-nior year, instead devoting her time to prepare for the softball season.

Her return gives the Bull-dogs an aggressive scoring and rebounding presence in-side. Valentini can also run the floor for the Bulldogs.

Abby Murdock and Emily Sullivan provide experience at the guard spots.

“They definitely have a good amount of their offense coming from the guards,” Dolock said. “We cannot allow them to drib-ble penetrate. I’m anticipating they will be pressing quite a bit.

“We have to be prepared for that and limit our turnovers.”

Chariho also has experience returning in guard Jess Rego and forward Jamie Dobson.

“We are just going to have to play our style and watch our turnover ratio,” Haik said. “They are a very physical team.”

Haik and Dolock both played in the tournament during their high school days.

“It’s important to play well. People talk about these games a lot more than they do some of the other games. When you see everybody around town, they talk about the tournament and certain players and mo-ments. It makes it a lot of fun,” Haik said.

Dolock agreed.“It breaks up the year a little

bit and we always have a great time,” Dolock said. “The addi-tion of South Kingstown will be very interesting this year.

“It’s really nice to see that all of the teams in the girls’ tournaments will have females leading their teams. You don’t see that too often. I think we are ready go and excited.”

The consolation game will take place Dec. 29 at 6:15 p.m. followed by the championship contest.

they are young like we are.”South Kingstown’s top re-

turnee is 6-3 forward Kevin Roberts. The Rebels, who haven’t had a winning re-cord since the 2009-’10 sea-son, featured a senior-laded lineup last year.

Seniors Eric Gaudette, Terell Handley and Riley Mc-

Donald look to expand their varsity roles this year. Coach Roland Fiore said there is ath-leticism if not experience in the junior class.

“It’s a young squad,” Fiore said. “We’re hoping to jell by the time we get to the tourna-ment. With the personnel we have, we’re hoping to play a quicker pace this year.”
