Early Preplant Burndown Herbicide Applications with Anthem ATZ

Early Season Weed control Maximizes Yield Potential

3/27/13

When developing burndown and EPP herbicide strategies corn growers must consider weed species, size, and subsequent emergence. Conversely to last year very little active growth has occurred in the month of March resulting in smaller weed heights. Small plants (especially marestail) present at the time of application should improve consistency of control for foliar applications. However, removal of existing vegetation selects for new emergence and as heat units accumulate summer annuals will begin competing with corn plants. One of the key aspects of maximizing yield is removing early season weed competition. Anthem ATZ provides broad spectrum residual activity on many grass and broadleaf weeds such as glyphosate-resistant marestail. Furthermore, including Anthem ATZ in tank-mixes with burndown herbicides will diversify herbicide chemistry as well as offer foliar activity on emerged weeds.

Anthem ATZ

Anthem and Anthem ATZ Corn Herbicide Recommendations Conventional and Reduced Tillage

1. Early Preplant (EPP) - 14 to 30 days before planting. Apply Anthem ATZ at 32 oz/a + Atrazine 0.5 to 1 lb or Anthem 8-10 oz/a + Atrazine 1 to 1.5 lb. Apply after tillage practices such as nutrient incorporation. Integrates well in an EPP followed by PRE to Early POST planned strategy.

2. Preplant – At plant to 14 days before planting. Apply Anthem ATZ at 32-40 oz/a + Atrazine 0.5 to 1 lb or Anthem 8-10 oz/a + Atrazine 1 to 1.5 lb. Apply after nutrient incorporation or other methods of seedbed preparation. If emerged vegetation is present at the time of application tank-mix a nonselective herbicide such as glyphosate, glufosinate or paraquat at labeled rates. Preplant timings fit well into a planned 2 pass program and may be used to diversify herbicide strategies providing robust activity on multiple weed species.

3. Preplant Incorporated – Anthem and Anthem ATZ applied alone or in tank-mixtures with Atrazine may be incorporated into the upper 1-2’’ of soil surface up to 14 days before planting. Uniform cultivation will maximize consistency of herbicide dispersal. Anthem and Anthem ATZ may be used with commonly used clear fluid nitrogen fertilizers (28 or 32% UAN).

4. Preemergence – At plant up to crop emergence. Anthem ATZ 32 oz/a + Atrazine 0.5 to 1 lb or Anthem 8-10 oz/a + Atrazine 1 to 1.5 lb applied at planting up to crop emergence will provide excellent in season weed control with activating rainfall. If emerged vegetation is present at the time of application tank-mix a nonselective herbicide such as glyphosate, glufosinate or paraquat at labeled rates. Preemergence applications also fit well in planned 2 pass programs.

5. Early Postemergence (EPOST) – Emergence to V4 (4 visible leaf collars). Anthem ATZ 32 oz/a + Atrazine 0.5 to 1 lb tank-mixed with glyphosate (Roundup Ready® corn) applied EPOST will provide additional foliar activity and broad spectrum in season residual control. Including NIS at 0.25% v/v to non loaded glyphosate formulations, or COC (1% v/v) will optimize herbicide performance. When tank-mixing with other herbicides use the adjuvant recommendation for the tank-mix partner

No-Tillage

.

1. Preplant (PP)– At plant to 14 days before planting. Apply Anthem ATZ 32 to 40 oz/a + 0.5 to 1 lb Atrazine or Anthem 8 to 10 oz/a + Atrazine 1 to 1.5 lb plus nonselective herbicide such as glyphosate (32 oz/a) + 2,4-D (1 pt/a) or paraquat (2 qt/a). Use adjuvant recommendation for the nonselective tank-mix partner.

2. Early Postemergence (EPOST) – From emergence to V4 (4 visible leaf collars). Apply Anthem ATZ 32 oz/a + Atrazine 0.5 to 1 lb. Postemergence herbicides such as Impact, Callisto, Laudis, or Hornet may be tank-mixed with Anthem ATZ to enhance foliar activity and increase weed spectrum.

Anthem and Anthem ATZ are Suspoemulsion (SE) formulations - Treat SE formulations the same as flowables or liquids. Remember DALE – Dry, Agitate, Liquids, Emulsifiers/Adjuvants.

Capture LFR PPI vs. Untreated Corn Stand Counts

Capture LFR 5.3 oz/a

Check

Can you see the difference?

• Capture LFR applied Preplant Incorporated (PPI) at 5.3 oz/A at a depth of no more that 3 inches provides excellent control of white grubs, wireworms and cutworms. • Controlling seedling pests will maximize potential for emergence and early growth. • Capture LFR works well in PPI management practices and may be tank-mixed with preemergence corn herbicide premixes.

• Improved formulation characteristics increase tank-mixing capabilities with liquid fertilizers. • Capture LFR integrates well with seed treatment chemistries and provides residual activity on seedling pests such as grubs, wireworms, and cutworms.

Seedling Damage

Physical damage caused by wireworms and grubs can influence seed coat integrity inviting pathogens and reducing emergence. Wireworm injury is often signified by growing point damage resulting seedling death. Cutworms feed on above and below ground plant tissue reducing stands and plant health. Injury associated with each pest has a common fate, stand reduction. Seed inputs are of economic importance and preserving each kernel’s potential for emergence and early season health is critical for maximizing yield.

Authority Herbicides The Authority family of products offer superior residual activity on multiple weed species including waterhemp, lambsquarters, and marestail. Residual herbicide use ahead of transgenic seed varieties will provide a greater interval for timely postemergence treatments. The importance of timely POST herbicide treatments is evident as effective chemistries provide greatest activity when applied to small weeds. Utilizing Authority brands will contribute to herbicide diversity in addition to buying extra time to make the POST herbicide treatment count. • Authority First - 4-6.4 oz/a, Cloransulam provides an additional mode of action with activity on ragweeds, lambsquarters, velvetleaf and marestail. No pH restrictions. • Authority XL – 4-8 oz/a, Chlorimuron integrates another mode of action with activity on broadleaves such as giant ragweed, cocklebur, morningglory, and marestail. Use higher rates on areas where glyphosate performance is inconsistent on waterhemp and palmer amaranth. •Authority MTZ – 10-20 oz/a, Metribuzin offers activity on several broadleaf weed species and works well when applied in combination with other photosystem inhibitors such as paraquat for foliar activity in burndown herbicide treatments. Great fall applied product as it offers rotational flexibility to plant corn if less than 14 oz/a is used. • Authority Assist – 6-12 oz/a, Imazethapyr provides effectiveness on several broadleaf species such as velvetleaf, nightshades, and cocklebur in addition to activity on grass species. •Authority Elite – 28-32 oz/a A new addition the Authority family. S-metolachlor offers a second mode of action to sulfentrazone for controlling pigweed and other small seeded broadleaves, in addition to grasses. No pH restrictions. * Utilizing increased rates of Authority products will provide greater in season control of tough weeds including amaranth species.
