Welcome back to school! It’s a wonderful time of year and students and parents alike are excited about the up-coming school year. Over the course of the year, you will likely have questions that your child’s teacher or oth-er school personnel can answer. But, did you know that the schools in Leduc have the opportunity to access Cst. Muz, our School Resource Officer (SRO). I took advantage of the dog days of summer to ask our SRO a few common questions.

4. What are the best ways for children to cross the street?

Cst Muz: If your child needs to cross the street, make sure they use the crosswalk at all times. Don’t let your child devel-op bad habits by letting them quickly cross the middle of the road , by your car, while you watch. This is teaching them that it is safe to cross wherever and accidents do happen. Set an example for your child and use the cross-walk if you need to cross as well,

5. What should I consider when making safety plans for my child when going to and coming home from school?

Cst Muz: Make sure that your child knows to go straight to school and/or straight home. Stops along the way should not be made unless agreed upon prior. Have your child walk with a friend if possible. Walk with your child, prior to school starting, to show them the route you want them to take, EVERYTIME. Observe any distractions or unsafe areas along the route and discuss with your child your concerns. Date Aug. 27, 2019; Location: Leduc Public Library (2 Alexandra Park); Time: 6-8 pm

7. What's the law for helmets for bikes, scooters, skateboards?

Though the law has not changed YET, for small wheeled devices like scooters and skateboards, it is highly recommended to wear an approved helmet while riding these as well.

1. When do school zones come back into effect for motorists?

Bus Loop Safety/Use of the

Crosswalks

WHPS has a loop for buses only. Par-

ents have a kiss’n’go area on the street. To prevent injury to members of our school family, vehicle traffic will not be permitted in the bus loop between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. This time represents the highest potential risk to students.

For those parents who are volunteering at the school, we have visitor parking in the east parking lot. Please do not park your vehicles in the bus lane. You may also park on West Have Drive. Thank you for your continued cooperation in this very important matter.

Meet the Staff/Hot Dog Barbeque & Annual General Meetings

& Bottle Drive Thursday, September 5th

5:30—6:30 PM - Join your child’s teacher in the classroom for an informal Meet & Greet.

Supervision The safety and well-being of our students is one of our greatest concerns. In order to assist us in ensuring that we maintain adequate supervision of students, please note the following supervision times and related requests Supervision AM (before school) – Our entry bell is at 8:30 AM. Beginning at 8:15 AM, we have staff on supervision. If your child attends a daycare or day home that transports your child to our school, please confirm that they are not dropping him/her off prior to this time. We do not want chil-dren unsupervised. Morning, lunch and afternoon recesses – These times are fully supervised by our own dedicated staff. After School Supervision – Staff members are outside from 3:15 PM until 3:30 PM. Please note that if your child wishes to remain at school to play at the playground, they must go home first or be with a parent or supervisor.

Parents, please assist us with ensuring optimal supervision in doing the following:

If you are riding your bike to school to pick up your child, we would ask that you model appropriate safety rules by walking your bike on school property and walking across marked crosswalks.

If you have your dog with you when you pick up your child, we would ask that you wait by the fence

which follows the street with your pet. Sometimes we have children afraid of animals or we have children who tend to excite the pet and we would hate for an injury to occur or an animal to be placed in a situation where they are over excited.

Terry Fox Walk/Run

The intent of the Terry Fox Walk/Run is to enlighten our students to the courage and dedication of a fellow Canadian. Terry Fox set aside his own pain and tragedy in order to make a difference in the lives of his fellow man by raising awareness and

funds for cancer research.

The date we have picked for this year’s Terry Fox Walk/

Run is Friday, September 27. Parents and siblings are welcome to join in!

This year, we are encouraging all students in our school to

donate a toonie to the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Re-search. We hope that a cure for this terrible disease can be

found!

Bus Reminder

If your child rides the BGRS yellow school bus, they must have their bus pass with them. The pass needs to be scanned daily. Please encourage your child to be on time for the bus pick up and departure time to and from the school.

Milk Program

West Haven Public School is happy to offer a milk program to our students in grades K-6.

Milk cards are sold online and through the office at a price of $18.00 which will buy the student 20 - 237ml chocolate or white milk.

Once purchased, these cards are kept in the classroom by the teachers, who will track or-ders and usage. When students are running low on their milk punch cards, the teacher will let them know so that they have time to purchase another card before their current one runs out.

This year, our school milk program begins on Tuesday, September 24, 2019

Homework Catch Up

Many parents are concerned when their child misses school due to prolonged illness and/or family vacations. Many of the class-room activities that students are engaged in on a regular basis involve discussion or group activities that are hard to replicate for homework. Please note that family holi-days are not excused absences and parents are responsible for ensuring that students have access to educational activities. Teachers will provide general guidelines for parents that deal with the topic under study. It is not possible to replicate lessons taught or provide detailed homework for each student across each subject area. During these occasions, we recommend that parents have their child read on a regular basis, keep a journal to promote writing skills, practice math concepts, etc. through games and computer assisted activities. Parents are also encouraged to access cur-riculum information and related computer activities through the BGRS website (ICT).

Our teachers will work with parents to en-sure that students have an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of con-cepts in a timely fashion upon their return.

Microwave Program

The WHPS School Council will once again be running a microwave lunch program for elementary students beginning in October. On these days students may bring food that requires reheating. Parent volun-teers will heat up the lunches in time for the lunch hour. Once the WHPSSC holds their AGM, we will have more information about this program.

Large Items on School Busses

Parents of students who are riding the bus this year are reminded that items such as hockey sticks, curling brooms, skateboards, etc. are not be allowed on busses. Articles cannot be transported that are more than 13” x 13” x23”. This applies to busses that regularly transport students, as well as busses that take stu-dents on field trips.

West Haven Hot Lunch Program

West Haven Public School has a hot lunch program that run on most Fridays throughout the year.

Ordering for this program is done online. Parents do need to set up a new account each year, as profiles are not carried over from one year to the next.

Our hot lunch program will open for ordering on Sep-tember 3rd and close at midnight on September 15th. Subsequent menus will be available to order on the 1st of each month, and the deadline for those or-ders will be the 15th of each month prior to the lunch menu's month. All orders must be COMPLETED AND PAID BY THE DEADLINE. The system will not allow you to order after the deadline, and any orders that are unpaid after the deadline, will be considered incomplete and removed from the system.

Instructions for setting your account are attached to this newsletter.

Bake Sale

We will run a bake sale each month. Each class in our school has an opportunity to host a bake sale. All items sell for 50 cents and students are limited to purchasing 1 item each in the morning. If there are leftover items, stu-dents may be given the opportunity to pur-chase additional items at lunchtime.

Classroom representatives will notify parents well in advance of the month of their sale and the quantity of items that are required. All monies collected are for that classroom’s use. This year’s bake sale dates will be in the October newsletter.

Staff Planning & Development Days

BGRS’s staff planning & development program and the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s Institute days for all staff will continue again this year. These include:

September 20th

October 21st

November 13th December 6th

January 31st

March 20th April 24th May 15th

Students do not attend classes on the above dates.

Lost and Found

It is very discouraging each year when we see the amount of clothing and other articles that are lost and never reclaimed. The main reason is that most of the articles are not la-beled, and we have no way of knowing to whom they belong. We are asking parents to go on a HUGE labelling blitz. Please….take the time to mark all of your child’s clothing / articles / belongings.

Learning Common News

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! I am looking forward to spending time with all of the students during library classes this school year. Students will be visiting the library once a week to read, sign out books, share ideas and stories, and partic-ipate in Scholastic Book Fairs. All stu-dents will be able to check out books for one week but can always renew them for an additional week (or longer).

Textbooks will also be assigned to stu-dents during the first week of September and it is their responsibility to take proper care of them.

Welcome Back!

Ongoing Communication

We encourage and value parent’s in-

volvement in education. Please main-

tain regular communication with your

child’s teacher by reading agendas

nightly, providing your email address

and contact information to the teacher

and attending parent/teacher confer-

ences. You may also call the school at

780-986-5991 to speak to staff mem-

bers.

Fundraising Society You can support the Fundraising Society by patronizing Boston Pizza (in Leduc). Bring your BP receipts to the school office so the fundraising society can receive 5% back. Thanks for your support! Volunteers/Visitors: Please sign in

We appreciate the many volunteers who help out at our school. We also have many visitors to our school and parents who drop items off for their children. The safety and security of your children and our staff is of the utmost importance. In order to know who is in our school at all times, it is impera-tive that volunteers and visitors at West Haven Public School sign in and out at the office. If parents wish to wait for their children, please meet your child outside their boot room door.

We would also like to remind our volunteers and vis-itors that student and staff privacy is an important part of our school and we would ask that you re-spect student and staff privacy by not discussing students or staff in the community. If there is a need for a parent/guardian to be aware of an issue, the staff at the school are in the best position to do so. We also ask that volunteers in our school re-frain from asking staff personal questions about students who are not their own children. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

For the 2019—2020 school year, anyone who is regu-larly volunteering at the school (bake sales, reading program, hot lunch, lice checks, etc.) will be required to obtain a current Vulnerable Sector Check (from the RCMP) and an Intervention Record Check (from Alberta Children’s Services). Should you require a letter to obtain these checks, please contact Joanne Fitzsimmons in the school office at 780-986-5991 or by email at [email protected]. These checks do take some time to process, so we encour-age you to contact us as soon as possible if you know you will be volunteering in our school.

Need to Reach Us?

Our school office is open daily between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM if parents wish to call a staff member. If the staff member is unavailable to take your call, you may ask to leave a voice message and the staff member will return your call. It is often difficult for a teacher to take a call immediately pre-ceding the warning bell in the morning or right after school in the afternoon, so we would ask parents to call at times other than these very busy times. To ensure effective and timely communication, if you have an e-mail address, please provide it to your child’s teacher. This will enable staff to communicate with you electronically . Staff may be emailed at the school by the following format: first name.last [email protected] From time to time it may be necessary for the school to relay a message from you to your child. Again, the times immediately preceding dismissal are extremely busy in the office. We would ask that parents use the student agendas to remind their children of plans for after school and only ask the school to relay a message if it is of an emergent nature. We are sometimes asked to remind students to go for a haircut or to walk with someone. These types of messages should be passed on to your child verbally and if necessary, placed in the agenda. Students are not allowed to use the office phone to make play

Safety Drills

BGRS has a comprehensive emergency re-sponse plan. The safety of our students and staff is important to us. WHPS will be prac-ticing various safety drills. These include fire drills and school lock down procedures. Discussions with students will precede our drills to increase the awareness of safety pro-cedures and decrease possible anxiety.

In the event of an actual school lock down, parents will be advised by text or email (after the event) of the necessity for the lock down. If alternate arrangements for pick up are necessary, we will contact parents.

School Newsletter/Updated Webpage

Our newsletters and school webpage are two of the best ways of com-municating all pertinent information about the school. We are continuing to be GREEN! All newsletters will be posted to the school webpage. Gen-erally, this will occur on the last day of the month. Access these at whps.blackgold.ca

Page 10: 325 West Haven Drive, Leduc, Alberta T9E 1B6 Phone (780) 986 … · Principal: Mr. Raymond Cable Assistant Principals: Mrs. Denise Harrison & Mr. Justin Klaassen 325 West Haven Drive,

Welcome back everyone. I hope you have had a wonderful summer! A special welcome to the families of our new students. We look forward to working with you and know that you will enjoy being a part of West Haven Public School. As always, we would like to take a moment to thank our parents and guardians for be-ing such important members of our community. The home and school connection is a vital part of the suc-

cess of our students, thank you for communicating with us and working together!

As the school’s Health and Wellness Champion, September is always exciting as all the students return and the various school teams and clubs getting rolling once again for another school year. I encourage all stu-dents to take advantage of the various opportunities to stay physically and mentally healthy by getting in-volved in their school.

As in previous years, each month our school will target a specific topic focusing on a different element of comprehensive student health relating to an element of physical health, mental health, or healthy nutri-tion. As September is a chance to create new pathways, meet new friends, and rekindle old friendships, our monthly health and wellness will focus on the topics of respect, friendship building, and developing our

school community.

Respect is best defined as an attitude of caring about people and treating them with courtesy, dignity, and positive regard. Respect means valuing others and ourselves. Respect is treating our belongings, the envi-ronment, and the world around us with consideration. As part of this month’s school activities, we will once again be celebrating Orange Shirt Day on September 30th.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation, mutual respect, and hope for generations of children to come. I en-courage everyone to wear something orange on September 30th to show their support and caring.

Lunch Hour Rules

Students are responsible for their behavior and if on-going issues occur and a resolution cannot be reached, the school reserves the right to withdraw the privilege of eating in the class for a period of time or indefinitely. All students are expected to be seated while eating lunch. There should be no throwing of

food or utensils. Students are expected to be in their own classroom during the lunch hour. Students may talk or visit while eating; however, the noise level in a classroom should be at

an acceptable level. If students need to leave their classroom, for any reason (e.g. bathroom, office, to put

things in lockers, etc.) they are to check with the teacher before doing so. Students are expected to clean up after themselves. Each classroom has paper towel and

cleaning solution. When the lunch hour bell rings to go outside for recess, students are to go outside

promptly. Supervisors are asked to ensure all students are out of the classroom and then please turn off lights and close the door.

If students are to remain inside for any reason, they must be in the class supervised or in the office.

If a teacher has to speak to a student for misbehavior during the lunch hour, they will monitor the number of times the problem(s) is/are occurring and may contact the parent.

LUNCH HOUR PROTOCOL: With the start of a new school year, we would like to take the opportunity to review the lunch hour protocol for the students who stay at school for lunch. Students are welcome

to stay for lunch but they must abide by the rules that have been established. We ask for parents’ support in reviewing these expectations with their child. A copy of these expecta-tions are printed below.

At West Haven Public School, elementary students go outside from 12:00 to 12:20 and

then eat lunch in their classrooms from 12:20 until 12:40. We do not utilize parent su-pervisors during the lunch hour. Our students are supervised by homeroom teachers dur-ing this period. Students go outside, weather permitting and there is always a staff mem-

ber ‘on call’ in the office to deal with issues/injuries which may occur. For the most part, our students are well behaved during the lunch hour. In the event of problems during the

lunch hour, the teacher on duty will deal with the issue. In the event of repeated issues with a particular student, we will contact the parents to advise them and to seek a resolu-tion. We appreciate your support.

HOT LUNCH 2018 - 2019

As we get ready for exciting year at West Haven Public School, it is also time to get the Hot Lunch Program up and running. We will be using an online order system, as well as, a PayPal only payment sys-tem. This system proved quite successful to many local schools, so we're hoping for just as much suc-cess for WHPS this year. Please note that you will need to set up a new account every year, as the pro-files do not carry over from year to year. Here's how to get started...

Go to www.westhaven.hotlunches.net Click on "Click Here to Register" Enter Access Code whps19-20 Complete the rest of the registration form. (Including your email address will ensure you receive

reminder emails about hot lunch order deadlines, and your child's hot lunch order for the up-coming week)

Click "Register Now" Follow the instructions to add each child in your family who attends Leduc Estates School Once your child(ren) has been registered, click on "Orders" Proceed to order October's hot lunch for your child(ren)

PayPal: The WHPS School Council only accepts hot lunch order payments through PayPal (www.paypal.com). No cheque or cash payments will be accepted at any time. You can either pay with a credit card as a PayPal guest, or set up your own PayPal account. If you do not have a credit card, or choose not to pay with a credit card, you can set up your PayPal account to link to your bank account. This will allow your PayPal payments to be debited directly from your bank account. If you choose to link your bank account to your PayPal account, please allow a minimum of one week to ten days prior to the hot lunch deadline to complete this process. Linking your PayPal and bank account includes PayPal making two small deposits into your bank account, and you verifying those deposits back to PayPal. This process could take a few days. The hot lunch online order system requires a small amount of setup time in the beginning as you must register each child you have attending our school prior to ordering hot lunch. Then, depending on how you choose to pay through PayPal, possibly one week or more may be required prior to the hot lunch deadline to get your October hot lunch orders paid. Once the initial setup process is complete, your hot lunch orders for the remainder of the year should be quick and simple. Upcoming hot lunch menus will be available to order on the 1st of each month, and the deadline for those orders will be the 15th of each month prior to the lunch menu's month. All orders must be COMPLETED AND PAID BY THE DEADLINE. The system will not allow you to order after the deadline, and any orders that are unpaid after the deadline, will be considered incomplete and removed from the system. **Please Note: Should you experience any issues with your PayPal account, you must contact PayPal di-rectly to solve the issue. WHPS School Council has no control over how the PayPal site operates, and therefore, cannot help with any technical issues regarding PayPal.
