Freedom this Summer
July is a fun time of the year with vacations and getaways, trips to the mountains or to the beach. There are barbeques, picnics and of course the fourth. Speaking of which, did you know that it was 238 years ago, on July 4, 1776, that fifty-six brave men of the 2nd Continental Congress, who were ready and willing to risk it all for the sake of their freedom, took pen in hand and signed the Declaration of Independence suing Great Britain for our freedom? In fact many gave it all for the cause.
Their conviction and bold stance resulted in untold sufferings for them-selves and their families. Of the fifty-six men, five were captured by the British and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army. Another had two sons captured. And nine of the fifty-six fought and died from wounds or hardships of the war.
Here are just some of their stories. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader saw his ships sunk by the British Navy. In order to pay his debts, he sold his home and properties and ultimately died in poverty. At the battle of Yorktown, British General Cornwallis had taken over Thomas Nelson’s home for his headquarters. Nelson quietly ordered General George Washington to open fire on his home. The home destroyed, Nelson died bankrupt. Another signer, John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their thirteen children fled for their lives. His fields and mill were destroyed. And for over a year, he lived in the forest and caves, returning home only to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later, he died from exhaustion. As a grateful nation, every Fourth of July we remember and honor their suffering and sacrifice for our freedom.
Likewise, just as there was a price to be paid for America’s freedom from England, so too was there a heavy price to be paid for our freedom from the burden of sin. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” As well, John 3:16 tells us that out of God’s great love for us He sent his one and only son to die for our sins and that whoever believes in Him will not spiritually perish but have everlasting life. Friends, Jesus fought the spiritual war over sin and death…and won our freedom. As a grateful people let us be mindful to remember and honor His suffering and sacrifice, not just one day a week but every day of the year. This summer as you enjoy the freedom to get away and do some traveling and vacationing, may it be an amazing time of making memories.
Blessings, Pastor Troy

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:34, 36 ESV)
With the 4th of July just days away, and summer in full swing, we are at the peak of enjoying the various freedoms we have as Americans. And to be sure, this is a wonderful blessing, and one that we should not take for granted. However, I can’t help but think of a freedom that we as Christians often take for granted, and that is our freedom in Christ.
We know from Romans 3:9 “that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin.” And as John 8:34 says, “everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.” By default, all of us were born as slaves to sin. We were born lost and hopeless, there was nothing that we could do in our own strength to reconcile us to God, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57 ESV) What a victory that Christ won for us! We could spend a lifetime exploring the implications of this victory, and never get past the surface. Indeed, I believe we will spend eternity searching the depths of God’s love for us. Our God truly “does great things beyond searching out, and marvelous things beyond number.” (Job 9:10 ESV)
So this summer I set one challenge before us. As we spend time with friends and family, enjoying the freedoms we have in this country, let’s take some time to meditate on the astounding freedom that we have in Christ, for “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” We are free indeed, so let’s praise and thank God for all He has done. In Christ, Andrew Broome
A Note From Pastor Hurley Whassup? If you are on the street that may be the question asked. What IS up? The Joy Club at Lakeview is very busy this summer. We had a wonderful trip to NarroWay Productions, where we enjoyed the musical “The Gospel According To Tennessee”. This was one of my favorite experiences with the Joy Club. July 10th we will leave the church at 9:15 AM heading to Wytheville, VA for another dinner theater production of “Then Sings My Soul”. This is always a great trip. Lakeview will celebrate “Senior Adult Day” on July 20th. Our service will be planned around Senior Adults. I will be preaching on that Sunday and we will have other participants. Do not miss this great Sunday. I can say that the Joy Club is very active and enjoying our senior years. Because we are retired we do not have time to do anything. Our calendars are filled with appointments (mostly doctors). Our hair may be gray, our step is not as swift and sure as it once was, and our voice may be getting weaker but we are still alive. Until our dying day we must proclaim the wonderful truth that God loves us and sent His Son to die on the cross that we might have life. The Bible tells senior adults, So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. Psalm 71:18 ESV
