Congratulations to Luke Field in Year 3 for competing in his first surfing contest - Round 1 of the Boland trials on Saturday, 25 January. He usually surfs in the under 8 division, but unfortunately there were only 2 under 8’s entering so they were put in an under 10 heat. The second round of the contest is in Melkbosstrand tomorrow and we wish him all the best of luck for that. It is always great to share the achievements of students in anything they also participate in out of school. If your son/daughter takes part in external activities, please let the office know so we can celebrate with you. ‘Slides 4 Smiles’ is this year’s charity fundraising event in aid of Operation Smile. We thought we’d try something different and we will therefore be working with Waterworld Strand (Video) to make this a great event. We are busy finalising details, but are planning to hold this, instead of the Sports Day, in the week beginning the 10 th of March. More details will be released during the course of next week, so watch this space. Message from the Rotary Anns regarding the support they received by the school community in their “Toys for Joy” projects. (The full letter is attached for your information.) ‘On behalf of the Helderberg Rotary Anns I wish to thank you, your staff, the parents and all the children at your school for yet again supporting us with our “Toys for Joy” project. We so appreciate the fact that whenever we ask you to help us with a project you are so helpful and willing.’ Another reminder regarding the Parents’ Association meeting next Thursday, 6 th of February. The meeting will be to select the 6 member committee, look at communication ideas for parents and the committee and we will also hear from Hugo Coetzee about a new initiative as well as other relevant info. There are international student leadership conferences, Intersek Culture Week, Operation Smile and many more things to talk about.

Extra-Curricular and Sports Clubs have started this week and it is great to see the activity around the school in the afternoons. Please remind your children to bring their correct PE kits to their sports activities. Students are not allowed to wear casual clothing to school sports clubs, unless they are waiting for uniforms that are on order. All students that have signed up for these clubs will be expected to continue with the club for the entire term.

Hats and SunscreenDid you know? Eighty per cent of sun-induced skin damage occurs before theage of 18 but manifests later in life, the Cancer Association of South Africasays. With this in mind, parents, please ensure your child comes to schoolwith sun screen on and note that they will not be allowed to play outsideunless they are wearing a school hat.

HIGH SCHOOLValentine’s DanceThe Year 7 – 12’s are invited to a Valentine’s Dance on Friday the 14th

February from 19h00-11h30. The theme of this year’s dance is Be myValentine…………and all that Jazz! The dress code is Jazzy 1920s and thecost is R65 which includes a boerewors roll and a coke.

Cederberg Camp- Year 7, 8, 9 and 11’sThe Year 7, 8, 9 and 11’s will be visiting the infamous Cederberg Mountainswhere they will be staying at the Sanddrif Camp resort. They will depart fromschool on Tuesday the 25th of March and will return on Friday the 28th ofMarch.

This is a biodiversity camp on which our students will learn about the uniquefauna and flora of the Richtersveld; in addition, they will be learning about thegeography and the history of the area. The students will have a number offun, educational tasks to perform during this camp. As a part of the tour,students will have the opportunity to explore the Stadsaal Caves andBushmen Paintings, hike up to the Wolfberg cracks and swim in the “HippoPool”, better known as “Maalgat”.

Students will be placed into groups and each group will be supplied with apacking list of equipment that they will need to bring along. In addition, eachgroup will be receiving a list of ingredients and menus. Groups will beresponsible for organizing, buying, packing and preparing their meals for theduration of the camp. This is a learning experience and one that we havefound to be, not only valuable and educational, but also very rewarding. Therewill be many awards and prizes up for grabs along the way, including, mostorganized, best braai etc.

The Journey – Year 10The time has come to let you know some of the exciting details for this year’s Year 10 Journey.

As you may well know, the ISH Year 10 Journey is an experience affordedsolely to our Year 10 students and was initiated in 2011. It is a camp thataffords the students the opportunity to embark on a “journey” of self-discovery, while offering them the opportunity to challenge themselvesbeyond their own personal boundaries, whether these are mental, physical oremotional. It is a wonderful opportunity for developing inner strengths andbroadening horizons, while also experiencing the amazing natural beauty ofour country. It is a privilege, for us living in South Africa, to embark on a tripsuch as this, while exploring our beautiful home.

WHEN: 15 – 28 March 2014 (13 nights, 14 days)

Ecology Field-Trip – AS BiologyThe Cambridge AS Biology course includes a field-trip component.

The students are required to study, make field-notes and then write a reporton an ecosystem they are familiar with. Our immediate coast-line is underever increasing pressure from a rapidly expanding human population, makingit difficult to render accurate observations of these ecosystems. Fortunately,we do have the opportunity to glimpse the majesty and wonder of our shore-line ecology, with the field-trip to the Duine Farm at Gouritsmond.

Locality: Die Duine, Gouritsmond. Approx 350 km on the N2from Somerset West.

Accommodation: Farm houses, bring own sleeping bags and pillows. NO electricity available.

Catering: Organised by the students, provide own cooler-boxes etc. Cooking utensils available

Duration: 5 days, 4 nightsDates: 24 March, depart school (arrive at school normal time

on Monday). 28 March, return to school between 4 to 5 o'clock pm Friday.

A letter with all the details has been sent out, please make sure the reply slip is returned to the office.
