3. Properties

3.1 The progressive sealing effect

STRAUB-METAL-GRIP

STRAUB-FLEX / REP

The progressive sealing effect is a unique and patented feature of the STRAUB gasket:

w As the pressure in the pipe increases so does the force on the sealing lips, due to the flow throughthe pressure equalisation channel.

w The gasket is not subjected to any great loading thanks to the minimal installation torque applied. This results in continued elasticity and a long coupling life expectancy.

w The free space between the sealing lips serves as a „reservoir“ for the gasket in the event oftemperature swings. Space is also provided here for the „strip insert“ (see chapter 6.2) accessorywhich protects the gasket from the pipe ends and extends the life expectancy.

w Authentic progressive sealing effect through an innovative sealing lip construction, which has provenits functionality millions of times in practice.

3.2 The progressive anchoring effect

STRAUB pipe couplings are used on conventional plain ended pipes without pipe end preparationbeing necessary. The progressive anchoring effect of all STRAUB-GRIP products is a unique and patented feature:

w As the bolts are tightened to the specified torque, the specially shaped teeth in the anchoring ringbite into the surface of the pipe. An axial restraint connection is created.

w Should the axial loading on the pipe increase due to increased internal pressure or exernal influences, the teeth bite even deeper into the pipe to compensate.

w There are STRAUB anchoring systems not only for hard surfaces such as iron and steel but also forsofter surfaces such as aluminium and plastic.

w Through differential hardening, the anchoring ring retains flexibility in service.

3.3 Stress-free joining

3.3.1 AnchoringThe spring effect of the housing and the anchoring ring result in a flexible gripping connection.

The housing which bridges the pipe ends imparts no forces and thereby keeps the stress on the variouscomponents to a minimum.

The pipework is therefore not rigid but is flexible at every joint.

3.3.2 SealingThe gasket is positioned on the surface of the pipe and enables the pipe ends to move freely.

The sealing and anchoring functions are independent of one another in STRAUB pipe couplings.

3.4.3 Life expectancy

The life expectancy of STRAUB pipe joints and STRAUB repair clamps fitted with sealing sleeves made ofNBR or EPDM extend to 25 year or more, provided that recommended storage procedures are correctlyadhered to. See below for details.

Due to the many years of STRAUB experiance we are offering as the only coupling manufacturer a5 year warranty. (within the limits mentioned under 4.3.2)

Application conditions

Increased temperature:The max. application temperature of EPDM is 125°C/250°F and NBR 100°C/230°F, but as a consequencethe life span will be reduced. In addition dynamical and chemical stress has to be taken intoconsideration as well. For different application please verify the life expectancy by the manufacturer.

Low temperature:Subject to performance requirements the elasticity of STRAUB sealing sleeves is sufficient to cope withtemperatures down to -30°C/-22°F. There is a loss of elasticity below this point which, under the stress ofadditional dynamic loading, can result in disruption of the elastomer.

The coupling casing and the anchoring ring (GRIP) completely enclose the sealing sleeve and thereforeprotect it from UV irradiation.

Because of their progressive sealing effect, STRAUB sealing sleeves require a smaller tightening forceand therefore subjected to less stress than, say, a flange seal. The elasticity and hence the working lifeof STRAUB sealing sleeves is consquently maintained over a longer period.

Storage

Recommended long term storage conditions:

w avoid exposure to direct sunlight

w store at consistent temperatures (maximum 40°C/104°F)

w the relative humidity should be kept above 50 %

w protect from dirt or soiling

3.6 Space requirements

The compact design of STRAUB pipe couplings is a valuable feature in narrow trenches, ducts, betweendecks of ships or when inserting new pipework in existing installations.

The compact dimensions of STRAUB products together with ability to position the bolts in any orientationenable placement and space savings of up to 50 % in comparison with traditional pipe connectingmethods such as flanges, etc.

3.9 Fitting / disassembly instructions STRAUB couplingsShort version. Please note complete fitting instruction for each type of coupling.

Additional corrosion protectionIf risk of corrosion exists, for long term pipe joint protection use shrink sleevesor protection tapes. Especially in case of couplings used underground.

ApplicationPipe joints can not take shearing forces (see installationconsideration). STRAUB pipe joints are maintenance-free, i.e. neverretighten bolts. Contact factory for minimal wall thickness of pipe.

A Preparation

De-burr and remove sharp edges from pipe ends. Clean the pipe surfacefrom impurities (bad coating). ð No loose matter under sealing lips.

Mark half-width of pipe joint on both pipe ends as fitting guide.

Remove plastic packing straps fitted and fit the pipe joint over the pipeend.

ð Do not dismantle the pipe joint.

ð Do not drop the pipe joint.

i

Band insertsare used in case of:w large distance between pipe ends w vacuumw swelling due to agressive liquids w under external pressureBand inserts are extra and must be ordered separately(Contact factory).

Linear misalignment1 % of outside diameter (max. 3 mm / 0.12“) is admissible. Larger misalign-ment must be rectified into angular deflection (cardan link).

C Bolting

Do not work above limits - or acummulate. Limits are for static loadsand radial rigid pipes only. For dynamic forces like pressure surges and thrustapply safety factor (Contact factory).

Tighten the locking bolts with a torque wrench to the final prescribed torquerate engraved on the pipe joint’s outer surface. The torque wrench must be setto the value accordingly.

Failure prevention: Do not tighten bolts above prescribed torque rate.Trouble shooting: In case of leakage clean pipe and sealing lips surface beforeinstalling pipe joint again. Detachable and reusable (see disassemblyinstruction.). Test pressure = 1,5 x nominal pressure

Safety measures before removing pipe joint

Disassembly

No pressure on pipe joint. Drain pipeline. Protect yourself against spilling liquid.Make sure pipe joint is not supporting pipe ends.

Loosen screws alternately but do not remove completely.Do not rotate pipe joint on pipe as long as teeth are engaged.

Loosen teeth engagement

Remove pipe joint

Insert tool and underneath casing and lift.Caution! Do not harm sealing sleeve.

Slide pipe joint to the side.Caution! Sealing lip may touch pipe end. Turn and move pipe joint smoothly.Clean pipe joint an re-lubricate bolts with an appropriate lubricant beforerefitting.

Do not rotate pipe joint on the pipe once teeth are engaged.

Adjust pipe joint then tighten bolts lightly and alternately with a ratchedwrench or powered .

3.11 Minimum wall thickness for stainless steel and copper nickel pipes

The progressive anchoring effect of the STRAUB GRIP couplings requires a minimum wall thickness of thepipes.

According to IACS-URP 1/2 and ISO standards. For other pipe dimensions, varying pipe materials, pipe wall thicknesses and pressure rates pleasecontact the STRAUB Applications Department.
