Career Planning

The MASTER Portfolio Concept:

One large binder (or binders) with EVERYTHING you’ve collected as part of your professional experience, education, proof of skills, etc.

This is your master library of materials that you use to customize a smaller binder of actual work samples and other appropriate materials for each specific time you utilize your professional portfolio.

When you first get started, your master portfolio and the version you show to others may be the same. But over time, you’ll move to creating a customized binder to show samples of your work specific for each purpose.

NEVER leave your original copy with ANYONE. Always make a COPY to share with others so your MASTER/ORIGINAL documents don’t get lost or misplaced.

NOTE: You should do the same thing with your resume! Have a MASTER version with EVERYTHING in it…and create a custom version for EACH specific job you search for utilizing key words specific to the job description, etc.

Job Interviews

Demonstrate Prior Experience, Skills, etc (may also use for Educational Credit)

Preparing for the Interview:

• What examples demonstrate proof of performance for this opportunity?

• Who specifically will I be meeting with? Would a portfolio be valuable for each person?

• What interview questions might I be asked and how could I incorporate the portfolio into the responses?

• How can I customize the portfolio for each person I am preparing one for?

• Who can proof the portfolio for me once I assemble it?

• Am I prepared to leave the portfolio behind or make arrangements for pickup/return?

What I would do DIFFERENTLY now had I realized I’d be using my work samples for securing potential clients as a self-employed entrepreneur later in my career:

1. Create a HANGING FILE or EXPANDING FILE of work samples for each PROJECT I worked on.

2. Write notes about completed projects immediately so I could recall later my specific involvement, contributions, obstacles we overcame and how, etc.

3. Capture MULTIPLE copies of original work samples (if possible). 4. Purchase extra copies of newspapers that run a story about you or a project you were

working on.

E-portfolio Development What is an e-portfolio?

A collection of work samples, proof of training/education, and things that relate to your professional experience and background in a dynamic web-based format which may include visual graphics, downloadable files, audio and video components. The primary difference between a print version of your professional portfolio and an electronic portfolio is the electronic portfolio is created on an Internet-based technology or website so you can easily share it with others.

Formats may include:

• Samples of your work saved electronically to a CD or flash drive

• Samples of your work posted online via a website or blog

• LinkedIn.com has elements of an electronic or online portfolio

Why would you want to do this?

1. Differentiate yourself in the marketplace!

2. More and more HR recruiters and hiring companies are looking for candidates online FIRST.

3. You can add basic website development skills to your resume and portfolio! Here is a SAMPLE e-portfolio concept you can take a peek at: www.julieperrine.wordpress.com
