Applied Business Studies Teacher in Charge of Subject: Miss Potts Entry Requirements: This course requires a sound level of numeracy and a good standard of written English. You will need to have gained at least B grades in Maths and English at GCSE. You do not need to have studied GCSE Business Studies to do this course. Course Details: This qualification attracts UCAS points in the same way as ordinary A Levels. Three units covering the AS part of the course; Unit 1 – Creating a marketing proposal (coursework – 33.3% of AS). Brief outline; Ideas for a new product (typically a chocolate bar) will be proposed, based upon extensive primary & secondary research. These marketing ideas will then be presented to a small audience. Unit 2 – Recruitment in the workplace (coursework – 33.3% of AS). Brief outline; A complete recruitment, selection, induction and motivation package is developed for a real business, based on extensive primary and secondary research. Unit 3 – Understanding the business environment (external exam – 33.3% of AS). Topics covered include SWOT & PEST analysis, break-even charts, budgeting, cash flow forecasts and types of business ownership. Three units covering the A2 part of the course; Unit 9 – Strategic decision making (external exam – 33.3% of A2). Topics include break-even analysis, cash flow forecasts, investment appraisal, marketing and human resource planning. Unit 10 – A business plan (coursework – 33.3% of A2). Brief outline; A realistic business idea is generated, based on primary & secondary research, which forms the basis of producing a full business plan. This is the presented to an invited audience. Unit 11 – Managerial & Supervisory Roles (coursework – 33.3% of A2). Brief outline; A report will be produced outlining how a chosen manager/supervisor performs their role. This will be based upon extensive primary & secondary research carried out over a few months. Exams/Coursework: AS A2 Career Options: Students may decide to have a career in Marketing, Human Resources or Management for instance.
