President’s Message
Message from the ACCJ President
Peter M. Jennings
PresidentThe American Chamber of Commerce in Japan
With the inaugural event in 2013, the ACCJ’s Women in Business Summit has been theseminal event in Japan for engaging leaders across all critical sectors – including: business, government, NGOs and thought leaders – in the dialogue on women in the workforce and women’s empowerment. The ACCJ is proud to be a passionate and dedicated contributor in this most important endeavor. We are grateful for tremendous support of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at our 2014 and 2015 events, and the remarkable support of our generous sponsors, talented participants and audience. We have made great strides but much work remains to be done.
This important dialogue has now progressed from diversity and inclusion to productivity. The ratio of women in the workplace in Japan is reaching an all-time high. However, challenges remain, such as maintaining the successful trajectory of women in the workenvironment; the re-entry of women from maternity or a break in service; and promotingthe success of female entrepreneurs in the marketplace. With each challenge comes fargreater opportunities.
This success in establishing a transparent dialogue on women in the workplace has alsoopened the door to further debate on raising the broader productivity of Japan’s workforce. Corporate culture change as an enhancement of productivity is now in the spotlight. Other factors, too, impact the global competitiveness of Japan’s labor market in closing the gap with international peers. Developing the productivity of Japan’s workforce needs a broader discussion and our 2019 WIB Summit is intended to bring together focus on both the real world issues and their solutions.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement. I was fortunate to participate in the 2014 Women in Business Summit and was inspired by the keynote speech of then USAmbassador to Japan, the Honorable Caroline Kennedy, who quoted Margaret Mead, saying, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change theworld; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

ACCJ Tokyo Women in Business Summit Vision Statement
As the labor shortage in Japan intensifies, an increasing number of Japanese corporations are turning to women to fill the gap – either by encouraging women outside the workforce to return, or by supporting women already in the workforce to turn their jobs into careers and move up the corporate hierarchy.
Whilst we have held Women in Business Summits for the past five years in key ACCJ member cities, OUR JOB IS NOT DONE. Despite the economic circumstances creating an opportunity for women to progress more quickly in Japanese corporate life, many companies still struggle with the implementation of these objectives. In our networking sessions for the WIB Committee, our Japanese members continue to report the challenges they face.
As in previous years, our forthcoming Tokyo Summit aims to provide practical advice for companies that are looking to increase the number of female employees in middle and senior management, based on best practices of other companies in Japan and overseas.
Moreover, as the labor shortage creates opportunity not only for women, but also for older workers (men and women), and for men seeking more flexible work/lifestyle choices, the WIB Committee is taking this opportunity to extend the scope of the discussion at the next Tokyo Summit. With half a day dedicated to the issues facing women in the Japanese workforce, the remaining half day will focus on broader workforce issues, including flexible workstyles in general, increased participation of older workers, increased use of foreign workers, and cross function / cross industry re-training.
Given the practical nature of the Summit, the approach is focused on smaller breakout and working sessions throughout the day.

Women Entrepreneurs: Opportunities, Obstacles and Successes
(In Conjunction with the Independent Business Committee)
Entrepreneurs are the engines for growth around the world, men and women. Not so long ago, the number of women entrepreneurs at major fundraising events, could be counted on one hand. To be taken seriously these women needed to adopt a “male” attitude and even then, it was hurdle after hurdle. Not so any longer as opportunities and successes are starting to multiply as a variety of factors combined have contributed to their visibility in all sorts of industries and in all sorts of businesses. Frankly, the more women entrepreneurs we have the greater the innovation and subsequent economic growth; the more female leaders at the forefront better stimulates that innovation.
This session will focus on women who have leaped over the hurdles and achieved entrepreneurial success. Sharing their stories, how they overcame challenges, doing things their way. You will walk away inspired and encouraged by their stories. There will be ample opportunity to ask questions at the end of the session.

Women Millennials: The Future of Inclusive Business Environment
(In Conjunction with the Young Professionals Forum)
The millennial generation account for about 21% of the world population and by 2025 is projected to comprise 75% of the global workforce. Yet in aging Japan, millennials only make up around 14% of the populace. As a result, employers are committing to recruiting and retaining these young workers, with a particular focus placed on diversity.
Clearly, things for young people today are different than a generation past, but there is much to learn from our current business leaders. In an effort to bridge these generations, we invite two senior business leaders and two rising millennials to join us in a panel discussion on both the past and present—delving into what it was like for women to build a career in the past, the situation today, and expectations for the future. Women in The Workplace: Good Judgment for Better
Decision Making
Due to the efforts of many leaders we have made great progress in Japan in regards to combating unconscious bias and promoting women’s issues in the workplace. However, the pressure on organizations will only continue to mount as the public along with newer generations of talent expect organizations to do even more to embrace diversity and create work environments that meet the needs of the 21st century.
Slogans and promotions are no longer enough; top executives will need to be better informed on changing workplace trends and be trained to make better judgements and people-focused decisions in order to guide their organizations correctly. The changing demographics means leaders will need to show ownership in making sure their organizations are prepared not only for the continued increase of women in the workforce but also foreigners, younger professionals and the impact new disruptive technologies are going to have on their industries.

Workshop: Are You an Inclusive Leader? The Key Things You Should Be Doing
Every Day
Diversity and Inclusion continue to be front of mind for many organizations and considerable efforts are being focused on increasing women’s professional participation and career development. Yet, company leaders in Japan who can truly be described as D&I ambassadors are in the minority and not enough attention is paid to the role of the leader in increasing inclusion. Nothing is more important to employees than seeing their leader demonstrating the values and communication that are being promoted across the organization. This workshop will give highly practical learning models and real-life examples, as well as hands-on practice, on reducing bias and integrating positive communication that will enhance your inclusive leadership skills. Join this interactive session to become a leader who demonstrates passion and belief in diversity through every day inclusive interactions.

Untapped Talent: Education and Training a Diverse Workforce
(In Conjunction with the Education Committee)
As workplace mobility and the “war for talent” increase, the workforce in Japan will no longer proceed, lock step, from college to new grad hires to retirement as a cohort. An increasingly diverse workforce will include mid-career hires, women restarting their professional lives and other unique career paths.
• Whether moving up the corporate ladder or re-entering the working force, how can employees--women, in particular--better equip themselves for a dynamic workplace. • How can employers leverage these diverse perspectives?
From a personal and institutional point of view, a panel of executives and educators will consider what it means to train and manage a more diverse workforce.

Funding Womenomics: Challenges and Opportunities
(In Conjunction with the Financial Services Forum)
Panelists will discuss emerging opportunities for women-oriented businesses and how they’re changing the landscape for investors, businesses, and entrepreneurs.
Womenomics, one of three pillars to Prime Minister Abe’s economic revitalization program, has helped lower barriers to women-run and women-oriented businesses. Though the press continues to debate the effectiveness of Womenomics as an economic strategy, few would argue that the business environment for women and women-oriented businesses has not improved in recent years due to the increased focus and energy given to women’s issues. This panel will explore the current state of businesses run by or directed to women, in the context of Womenomics, to better understand the current state of Womenomics and to identify key opportunities and areas to watch.

Flexibility for All: Successful Practices
While predicting a sharp decline in the labor force population, rectifying long working hours is one of the pillars of Work Style Reforms undertaken by the government. If long working hours are rectified, labor productivity will increase, women’s employment rates will also improve, and diversity in the workforce will be improved. It will also encourage more women to take on leadership roles. In our session, three different companies from different industries will announce successful measures taken regarding flexible working style methods. We will also look into the positive effects that occurred through these methods and hope it will be encouraging to many companies.

The Business Imperative for LGBT Marriage Equality
(In Conjunction with the Human Resource Management Committee)
The Business Imperative for LGBT Marriage Equality: Japan currently does not provide any National level LGBT protections, either anti-discrimination or same-sex partnership recognition. This potentially impacts 10 million Japanese people. It has been shown that when companies can provide a truly equitable work environment, employees can bring their full creative energy into the workplace, resulting in greater loyal, engagement and productivity. At a time when the workforce is shrinking, business is expanding outside Japan and Japan is welcoming more foreign visitors through tourism and global events such as Tokyo 2020, now is the perfect time for the Japanese government to enable marriage equality. A panel will come together to put real faces to very real stories of the challenges faced by the LGBT community in Japan, particularly in the workplace, helping us engage the ACCJ business community and raise awareness of the LGBT inclusion in the workplace issues.

Robotic Revolution: How Japan’s Workforce Productivity Is (Finally) Being
Overhauled by Rpa And Ai Tech – And What It Means for Women Especially
(In Conjunction with the Information, Communications and Technology Committee)
After decades of failing to keep pace with other countries in terms of productivity increases, Japan may be at an inflection point due to the introduction of robots. More accurately, via RPA - Robotic Process Automation, companies are now able to take repetitive work out of the hands of people, thus allowing those people to focus on higher value add tasks. Aligning well with government initiatives, these technology solutions are not predicated on changes to immigration and labor laws.
With our esteemed panel of speakers, we will explore the current state of Japan’s workforce productivity and what is being done about it, focusing on the latest technology trends and specifically on RPA. With speakers from consulting specialists, solution providers, entrepreneurial and executive management backgrounds, the work stream will be quite interactive offering multiple perspectives on the decision-making process, as well as the implementation of this transformative new technology. We will explore the key challenges and pitfalls in deploying, including commentary about some first-hand case studies. Discussion will be interactive and proactively integrate questions from the audience, as we also tackle the broader subject of what these new technologies will mean for women in the workforce in particular.

Retain & Develop Productive Teams in Times of Change: A Discussion for Managers
(In Conjunction with the Workforce Productivity Pillar)
We all see the forces of globalization and digital transformation pressing in on Japan and forcing companies, both global and local, to adapt to global competition. This has led to higher expectations from employees for a strong corporate vision, better working culture and clear career development. Leaders and HR departments are committing to sweeping changes in working style, performance improvement and pay for performance which are key to creating a high performing culture. However, those that have to shoulder the burden of execution are the middle managers. Many of these managers find themselves unprepared for and unsure of how to execute these new work systems while ensuring day to day business operations.
In a panel discussion format with a moderator, we will bring together 4 professionals with extensive experience guiding organizations, teams and individuals through change toward higher performance and productivity. We will discuss the practical considerations of retaining talent in a competitive market and during organizational flux and then guiding team members to high productivity and the realization of career development. Our panelists will offer practical, real-life examples and useful measures to support managers in their quest to retain and develop high performance teams in the fast changing Japan of 2019 and beyond.

Corporate Culture Change: Accelerator of Workforce Productivity (In Conjunction with the Independent Business Committee)
With the rapid changes in today’s global economy and shrinking workforce, companies are developing strategies to integrate new technologies, become more globally integrated and create an environment to attract, retain and motivate their employees for greater productivity and creativity. As the saying goes, culture eats strategy for breakfast. So companies are trying to figure out how to change their culture, when the company culture is so strong and precious. Hear from panelists who are going through culture change, how they are approaching it and some keys to success.

The Japan Labor Paradox: Why Do We “Retire” Older Workers While Faced With
An Acute Talent Shortage? (In Conjunction with the Human Resource Management Committee)
Mandatory retirement, originally devised to provide longer term employment stability and replenishment of company employees, today forces employees to either leave a company or continue working at a reduced wage. It also discriminates against elderly employees in a way which would be illegal in many other developed nations. Are there alternative ways to ensure we leverage our existing labor pool and maintain the dignity, productivity and the right to choose for our older worker colleagues? Given the life-shift environment due to the 100 year life expectancy and changing, more flexible work style in the society, should we explore better ways to utilize this “retirement age” talent?
