Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

December 2015-November 2016

Motto: “Merciful like the Father”

The Holy Year begins on December 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This liturgical feast day recalls God’s action from the very beginning of the history of mankind. After the sin of Adam and Eve, God did

not wish to leave humanity alone in the throes of evil. And so he turned his gaze to Mary, holy and

immaculate in love (cf. Eph 1:4), choosing her to be the Mother of man’s Redeemer. When faced with the gravity of sin, God responds with the fullness of mercy. Mercy will always be greater than any sin, and no one can place limits on the love of God who is ever ready to forgive. We want to live this Jubilee Year in light of the Lord’s

words: Merciful like the Father. Jesus who says,

“Be merciful just as your Father is merciful” (Lk 6:36).

I have asked the Church in this Jubilee Year to rediscover the richness encompassed by the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. The experience of mercy, indeed, becomes visible in the witness of concrete signs as Jesus himself taught us. Each time that one of the faithful personally performs one or more of these actions, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee Indulgence. Hence the commitment to live by mercy so as to obtain the grace of complete and exhaustive forgiveness by the power of the love of the Father who excludes no one. The Jubilee Indulgence is thus

full, the fruit of the very event which is to be celebrated and experienced with faith, hope and charity.

(The above text was taken from a letter from Pope Francis)

Located here at St. Michael you will find a newly created temporary shrine dedicated to the “Divine Mercy”.

It will be present from December 8, 2015 through November, 2016. Everyone is encouraged to pray often at

this shrine in the year ahead. The Sunday bulletin will continue to provide you with important information

and further explanation of this incredible opportunity for grace and spiritual growth. You can also read about

the Jubilee Year in the Criterion newspaper.

It is a time when we will learn about Mercy given and Mercy received.

As a part of this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Father Aaron will hear additional

confessions on weekdays, Tuesday through Thursday, from 5:30-5:55 P.M.

prior to the 6:00 P.M. Mass beginning Tuesday, December 15th.

Saturday confessions will remain available from 4 until 4:45 P.M. prior

to the 5:00 P.M. Mass.

The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of

our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. Instructing, advising,

consoling, comforting are spiritual works of mercy, as are forgiving

and bearing wrongs patiently.

The corporal works of mercy consist especially in feeding the hungry,

sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned,

and burying the dead. Among all these, giving alms to the poor is one of

the chief witnesses to fraternal charity: it is also a work of justice

pleasing to God.

To the Parishioners of St. Michael, Thank you all so much for coming to the reception in my honor. When I came to work at St. Michael in the fall of 1999, I had no idea the multitude of blessings that would come my way. I soon found out that what I was doing was not just a job, but a calling to serve others. I found that each day was about being “the hands and feet of Jesus” to others. In my sixteen years at St. Michael, I have had the privilege of working with many of you through youth ministry, sacramental preparation, and religious education. Many years ago, Fr. Severin asked me to assist him with funeral planning, I was honored by his request and what evolved was a ministry of assisting families at a time, when they need help the most. I will always be thankful that I had the opportunity of serving St. Michael Church. I will never forget the many moments of grace like seeing a child receive the Eucharist for the first time; the look of peace on a child’s face after they receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, watching a teenager grow spiritually to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and standing hand in hand in prayer with a family who has lost a loved one. There is not enough paper to begin to thank everyone that has touched my life, but please know, I am eternally grateful for having had the opportunity to serve you. I’m grateful to Fr. Severin, Fr. Bill, Deacon Wayne, Fr. Joe and Fr. Aaron for their guidance and constant support.

It was never a job, only a labor of love.

God’s Blessings to all,

Paula Richey

Q & A Question: Why were so many trees on the parish property cut down?

Answer: The trees were cut down

because they were dead, destroyed by

the “Emerald Ash borer”…a highly

destructive green jewel beetle.

On Thursday, December 10, St. Michael Parish will offer an extra opportunity for

parishioners to receive the sacrament of Penance following the 6:00 P.M. Mass. Additional priests will be available to hear confessions. This provides an excellent opportunity to go to confession during Advent.

The Moorman Family had a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving! We are grateful to St. Michael Parish, St. Michael Rosary Guild, our relatives and friends who have been praying for Joe’s health since March. He has made progress in healing thanks to your prayers, and he will be fitted for shoes this week. We also have prayers being answered for a family situation, since last year there are signs of improvement. Many prayers have been said by the Rosary Guild for us. They are a great support system. I don’t know what I would have done without them. I am glad to be a part of such a group that does so much for St. Michael. Joe & Theresa Moorman
