HONG KONG PEOPLE SHOULD PAY MORE ATTENTION TO COPYRIGHTChan Nim Yee Carol13202677GCPS 1005, Section 100206th November 2014Mr Lau Cheuk Yan

Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that copyright is important.

INTRODUCTION

(attention getter)I. Did you ever download music from the Internet illegally? Did you ever try to download cracked software? Or copy a book on your own?

(relate to audience)II. I think most of you did at least one. However, it may sound ridiculous if you need to pay money to buy a song. So, how to make it less ridiculous?

(background)III. Before I start, I need to briefly explain what is copyright. Copyright is a legal right which protect the creator of an original work exclusive right to it use and distribution under law. Within a limited time, the creator can receive compensation for their intellectual effort. It is the form of intellectual property which can refer to any form of and idea or information.

(credibility)IV. As a music student, I need to compose many different pieces over my life. However, the reason why I dont want to be a composer is that the receptiveness of copyright in Hong Kong is generally low, especially in music.

(reveal purpose)V. After this speech, I hope you can understand more about copyright and start to think before you download anything from the internet.

(preview structure)A. Copyright aimed at protecting the creatorB. Promoting free markets and competitionC. Protecting copyright is the responsibility of everyone

(transition)[Lets us start with the idea of copyright.]

BODYI. Copyright aimed at protecting the creator

A. Goal of copyright.

(quotation)1. According to the Copyright Clearance Center, it mentioned that the main goals of copyright are to encourage the development of culture, science and innovation, while providing a financail benefir to copyright holders for their works, and to facilitate access to knowledge and entertainment fot the public.[After knowing the goald of copyright, we should know more about the details of copyright. Lets start with the duration of copyright.]B. The duration of copyright1. The general rule is that copyright would last for 50 years after the creator passes away. However, it is only the common practice, there are some variations to this depends on the types of work.

(example)a. A website called IMSLP, which provides free music socres for many different composers, e.g. Mozart, Beethoven. These composers had passed away for over 50 years, so they are not protect under the copyright and people can freely download it from the Internet. However, why we still need to go and the buy the music sorces? Its because the publisher hold the copyright of the edition of the music socres.C. How people use copyright to earn money?1. Once you own the copyright of an original work, you can sell your ideas to the company which engage in your ideas.

(example)a. For example, you wrote a book, you can go and find a publisher who interest in your book. They will publish it for you and you will receive a specific amount of money for each book sold.

[Second, let us move to the metal aspect to know more about the benefits of listening classical music.]

II. Promoting free markets and competition

A. Market is a place that the creators can treat as the platform of competition.

1. Under the copyright law, creator can easily show off their ideas which totally belongs to him or her.

(example)a. For examples, Samsung and Apple. Samsung claim that Apple used the idea of notification center and place it in the ios5. It is the competition of creativity.2. The creativity will further increase. The culture of creative will improve.[Third, copyright is not only the responsibility of the creators or the publisher, its also everyones responsibility]

III. Protecting copyright is the responsibility of everyone

(example)1. When you create something, wont you proud of your work when you spend a lot of time and energy creating it? Even this speech, I felt proud once I uploaded it onto the turnitin. You would be upsest if someone just copied any of your works without your permission. So do the others?a. Imagine that you cant receive any salary after you work in a company for a month. Creating things is their professional. They use creativity as their tools to earn money. However, if you download the file from the internet illegally, they couldnt receive any money, which means that they cant receive the salary.2. The creators are trying to improve the soceity

1. Whenever there are some new products, they were created before of improving our life.

(example)a. For examples, there were no portable charger around 6 years ago. Creativity is very important. However, the only way to enhance creativity is the copyright.

CONCLUSION(transition)[In conclusion, I stated the importance of copyright to the society.]

I. After the speech, I think you will have a better idea and concept about copyright

(simple summary)II. To review, then, let me remind you of the three main reason of respecting the copyright:A. Copyright aimed at protecting the creator B. Promoting free markets and competition C. Protecting copyright is the responsibility of everyone
