The 2nd Annual UCLA–Mellinkoff Gastroenterology Symposium will focus on novel medical, endoscopic and surgical therapeutics for a wide array of gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders. Distinguished faculty will share their specialized expertise through formal lecture, Q & A panel discussion and hands–on endoscopy opportunities. The hands–on sessions provide a valuable learning opportunity, though no CME credit will be issued for participation. This agenda has been specifically designed to offer practical approaches and solutions that healthcare professionals may readily integrate into their daily practice.

Following completion of this program, participants should be able to:

1. Discuss treatment options for esophageal disorders including Barrett’s esophagus

2. Describe the applications, execution and advancements in therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy

3. Demonstrate enhanced procedural skill when managing gastrointestinal bleeding

4. Incorporate novel treatment strategies when managing inflammatory bowel diseases and its complications

5. Apply practical clinical tips when managing common issues in peri–anal disease

6. Discuss recent developments in the management of functional gastrointestinal problems

7. Manage patients with chronic liver disease

Sherman M. Mellinkoff, MD

The UCLA-Mellinkoff Gastroenterology Symposium is named after a passionate advocate for medical education and a highly respected clinician-teacher who continues to serve as emeritus dean and emeritus professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

In 1962, Dr. Mellinkoff was asked by then-Chancellor Franklin Murphy to serve as dean of the UCLA School of Medicine. For the next 24 years, he would oversee a period of remarkable growth and development during which the school secured an international reputation for both medical education and research. By the time he retired in 1986, Dr. Mellinkoff had held his position longer than any other active medical school dean in the country and had earned the nickname “Dean of Deans.”

From the beginning, Dr. Mellinkoff was cherished for his commitment to medical education. In both 1961 and 1962, UCLA’s medical students presented

him with the Golden Apple Award as the faculty member most respected as a clinical teacher. Two decades later, he received the Abraham Flexner Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges, one of its most prestigious awards, and was invited to present the 1982 Alan Gregg Lecture. At UCLA, the Sherman M. Mellinkoff Faculty Award was established in 1979 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the medical school. The award honors the ideal in doctor-patient relationships and medical education. Because of the high esteem in which Dr. Mellinkoff is held, it is considered by the faculty to be the highest honor of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

In addition to independence, the FDA requires that non-promotional, commercially supported education be objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous. The policy further states that all potential conflicts of interest of the CME staff and faculty be fully disclosed to the program’s participants. In addition, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education policy now mandates that the sponsor adequately manage all identified potential conflicts of interest prior to the program. We, at UCLA, fully endorse the letter and spirit of these concepts.
