About the Conference Innovation and development of aircraft components through these ages have given the industry ability to fly across the globe

while giving the operators benefit of running with minimal costs. The aerospace industry has converged into a design methodol-

ogy that has not seen much review after the large scale integration of jet engines in 1960s. However with tougher environmen-

tal targets and regulations that are to be faced by the industry, a greater period of innovation is to be undertaken by the manu-

facturers. Flightpath 2050 set by the High Level Group of the European Commission on Research in Aviation has given the em-

phasis that the partnership between EU businesses and the Industry have to ambitiously further reduce noise, NOx and CO2.

With this visionary plan, it is anticipated that the industry will have the sufficient technologies and practices to reduce CO2

emissions per passenger kilometre by 75%, NOx by 90% and noise by 65% against the performance of aircrafts operated in

year 2000. To build a new viable aircraft, project period and development costs should be reduced. With the current airworthi-

ness regulatory framework there isn't much space for novelty designs. A performance based approach within the regulatory

framework will the give the design space to integrate innovative solutions with a clear premise to achieve zero safety risk.

AASST 2019 provides the perfect opportunity for you to do so, as it aims to provide an ideal platform for industry leading re-

searchers, technology developers, industrial players and supply chain partners to converge. Bringing the pioneers together the

conference aims to promote the methodologies, exchange of ideas and the way forward to commercialisation.

Adrian Murphy is Professor of Aeronautical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast with research interests focused on predictive modelling, in particular developing meth-

ods to understand the influence of processes on product in-service performance and cost. His research has covered the structural and economic performance of laser beam

and friction stir welding for metal aerospace structures, thermoforming, layup automation, load case analysis and lightning strike on composite aerospace structures. He has

published over one hundred and forty journal and conference articles, including a significant number of projects on novel aerospace structural designs, manufacturing ap-

proaches and material systems. Much of this research has been in collaboration with industry enabling significant experimental validation of his work and enabling the inte-

gration of cost and whole-life analysis with structural design and manufacturing. He was a winner of the IMechE Thomas Hawksley medal in 2006, the Kenneth Harris James

Prize 2006. Adrian joined the staff of Queen's in 2002; he has a Masters degree in Aerospace Vehicle Design from Cranfield University and an Aeronautical Engineering

After receiving his Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calcutta and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, respective-

ly, Ranjan Banerjee joined the Structural Engineering Division of the Indian Space Research Organisation, Trivandrum in 1971 and worked there for four years, first as a

Structural Engineer and then as a Senior Structural Engineer. Later in the year 1975 he was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to study for a PhD degree at Cran-

field University where he conducted research within the technical areas of structural dynamics and aeroelasticity and received his PhD in 1978. He then joined the

Structural Engineering Division of the University of Cardiff and worked there for six years first as a Research Associate and then as a Senior Research Associate to investi-

gate the free vibration and buckling characteristics of space structures using the dynamic stiffness method. He joined City, University of London in 1985 as a Lecturer in

Aircraft Structures and he was promoted to Senior Lecturer and Reader in 1994 and 1998 respectively. In March 2003 he was promoted to a Personal Chair in Structural

Dynamics. To date Professor Banerjee has published 112 journal papers and 95 conference papers from his research. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded

a DSc by City, University of London in 2016

Sunetra Sarkar, IIT Madras, India

Kiran Ramesh, University of Glasgow, UK

Kiran Ramesh is a Lecturer in Aerospace Sciences at the University of Glasgow. Prior to this, he has obtained his MS and PhD degrees from North Carolina State University,

USA. His research areas are unsteady aerodynamics and nonlinear aeroelasticity, and his research methodology involves the development of analytical and low-order nu-

merical methods for modelling the underlying phenomena. He works on various engineering problems underpinned by these research areas such as developing control laws

for highly flexible aircraft, design of flapping-wing flyers/swimmers, and the use of flapping wings for renewable power generation. In his research career, he has introduced

a new aerodynamic entity called the Leading Edge Suction Parameter (LESP) which is used to augment potential-flow solvers like panel codes with the capability to predict

and model leading edge vortex (LEV) formation. This concept and the discrete-vortex code based on it are being used and developed further by several research groups

around the world.
