Level 3 Diploma in Music Technology – TERM 3 The Brief Movie Project (Related Units: 20 Music and Sounds for the Moving Image, 7 Composing Music) A common scenario for any music producer is that a film company wants to see an example of your composing and sound design work. You must work within a team to produce a short movie and an accompanying soundtrack that can be used as part of a show-reel. In this project you will be assessed on your ability to apply recording and sequencing techniques to effectively enhance or complement visual media. You will also be required to use your composing skills to apply a variety of different short compositions to accompany your film. Within a small group you are to make your own film and, using no sound recorded by the camera itself, you must create its entire soundtrack, including sound effects, music and dialogue. A good start is to within your group research the use of music and sound within films describing how they are used to effect mood and emotion. Knowing some history of the development of movie sound and the soundtrack pioneers of the 20th century and modern era may help you with your artistic choices. Firstly you must submit a proposal for your own short film including a simple “storyboard”. You will also outline how you plan to use dubbing (voices), effects and music to enhance your piece. You will film using the college camera or your own camera (please note demand will be high for the college camera and it must not be taken off grounds). Once you have filmed all the shots required you must then edit them within I-movie and save as a Quicktime file. Import the final edited movie into Logic and start to create your soundtrack. It must include:

1. Appropriate music. 2. A noise floor/atmosphere (interior, exterior, busy street, field etc). 3. Realist or effective sound effects (doors slamming, cups being put down etc). 4. Clear and realistic dubbed voiceovers.

Export the audio to the movie and upload to your blog site. A written report of the process must be completed on your blog and include an evaluation of the process. Submission Deadline: 23/6/14
