The Brief in Detail – MUSIC PRODUCTION PORTFOLIO Music Production Portfolio (Unit 32 – Sequencing Systems and Techniques) The aim of this project is to develop your knowledge of music sequencing software and the transferable skills that facilitate the realisation of musical ideas in both audio and MIDI environments. You will develop the skills to set up, use and discuss sequencing systems and techniques. (Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Nationals specification in Music and Music Technology - 2010 Specification). Scenario: You have been asked by a Music Software Developer to promote their product to musicians and producers. Your will create a portfolio of work that uses many of the functions available and a ‘How-to-Use’ guide that explains how, why and what you have used. Planning will be a key element to this project and it is therefore crucial that for each musical project you devise a production schedule that includes a number of targets and deadlines. Justifying your decision-making is important when delivering a product, and effective listening is critical in determining the decisions made. TASKS Task 1: Create a portfolio of recordings using MIDI sequencing skills. A variety of material will be asked of you during this project: jingles; cover versions and short original scores/compositions. Try to show a level of competency with this, using appropriate techniques. Once you have achieved a level of competency, try to show imagination and creativity and mastery of sequencing skills (U37 GC2) Task 2: Create an audio book using audio sequencing skills. Try to show a level of competency with this, using appropriate techniques. If you feel you have achieved a level of competency, try to show imagination and creativity and mastery of sequencing skills (U37 GC3). Task 3: Create a ‘How-to-Use’ guide that describes the hardware and software used in the creation of your work in Task 1 and Task 2. It must explain/illustrate/analyse the terminology related to sequencing. Including how to record and edit both Audio and MIDI, mixing and bouncing down. Include a block diagram of the computer, keyboard, soundcard, speakers etc. Include illustrations, photos and technical diagrams where appropriate (U37 GC1+4) PASS, MERIT AND DISTINCTION are attainable (see grading sheet below for criteria)
