TRACEY JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015 www.brooksideart.weebly.com This year has been filled with creativity, illumination, and success. Many of our growing artists have been recognized and accepted for a multitude of state and local competitions. For starters, Brookside will once again have artwork, by our student body displayed in the entrance of the SRQ Airport. This work will be on display through December so I encourage you to stop and reflect in front of these masterpieces before boarding your next flight. Next, Blake Johnson ( pictured above) is one of twelve artists in the state chosen to have their work displayed in next year’s Florida Highway Patrol Calendar. Blake’s work touched on the theme of No Texting and Driving and was as strong conceptually as it was visually. Earlier this month, Brookside found out that two of our own will have artwork displayed in this year’s Embracing Our Differences Exhibition. Both my own and Simeon Waters’ (8th grade) works were chosen from a field of over 6,000 entries. These images will be displayed in Island Park starting in April. We hope to see you there! It has been an exciting year so far for Brookside, and we look forward to further success in the future. Through education, discipline, and hard-work, anything can be accomplished. - Mr. Tracey

Recognized Cudas (cont.)! To conclude this newsletter, I would like to end with a shout out to the wonderful presentation Gavin Boyer (6th grade) gave at last month’s School Board meeting. ! The Sarasota County School Board took time to highlight all of the wonderful arts programs from our county’s middle schools. Gavin spoke on behalf of Brookside’s Art Department, and brought down the house with his poignant remarks and superlative oratory skills. ! Thank you to our School Board for their continued support for the arts, to Mrs. Lawrence for her advocacy of arts education, and to the entire Boyer family.

Project #3: Self Portraits (Fauvism)

! Students used their knowledge about facial proportions to draw a self-portrait. After this was completed, students used Fauvist principles to paint their portrait. At the beginning of the project, students used the faces of those around them to learn about facial symmetry. During the drawing and painting portions of the project, students constructively critiqued each other, with the goal of producing an accurate portrait. This process allowed students to combine creative and technical knowledge to produce a visually strong work of art.

Project #4: Cubist Instruments (Cubism)

! Students composed a work of art depicting one instrument from multiple perspectives. Students integrated these different renderings into one cohesive drawing that was strengthened through the use of multiple artistic mediums. Students collaborated in pairs to decide where connection would be made within their drawings. Through this project, students were able to use ideas from cultural, historical, and artistic references to create personal responses in personal artwork.
