Many people have as-sembled emergency sup-ply kits and developedfamily communicationsplans to ensure theirhomes are prepared for adisaster. But disasterscan strike at any time, day or night, when peopleare working, shopping orvisiting a business. That’swhy it’s important forbusinesses to have a dis-aster preparedness planthat addresses workerand customer safety andbusiness continuity. The Illinois EmergencyManagement Agency ishighlighting business pre-paredness throughoutJuly as part of 12 monthpreparedness campaign. The Insurance Infor-mation Institute esti-mates that up to 40percent of businesses af-fected by a natural orhuman-caused disasternever reopen. The first step in devel-oping a plan to protectemployees and customersis to assess the threats inthe area, such as torna-does, flooding or blizzards.Develop a plan that ad-dresses each threat, tak-ing into considerationtime of day and differentshifts. Include a way tomonitor hazardous

weather, such as a NOAAweather alert radio. Business continuityplanning includes a busi-ness impact analysis, which predicts the conse-quences of disruption of abusiness function. Identi-fying and evaluating theimpact of disasters onbusiness provides thebasis for developing recov-ery strategies, as well asprevention and mitigationstrategies.
