Do you have a healthy eating/food and nutrition policy?

How often is it reviewed?

How is it developed/reviewed/consulted on?

What would you do if the following happened at your setting? For their child’s birthday a parent/carer sends in a lollipop for

each child and a cake to be shared with all the children.

A child is dropped off with the following food provided for the day;

A packet of chocolate biscuits, a standard sized chocolate bar, a packet of crisps and two fruit juice drink cartons. A parent/carer attends the setting to collect their child while

drinking sugary fizzy pop and then gives the child the drink.

The policy/approach should be clear. Changes/new rules should be consulted on. Parents should be aware – messages should be clear,

shared/displayed. Staff should feel confident and have the knowledge and

skills to deal with the situation. Consistency in the approach. Healthy eating is not just about what is on the child’s plate at mealtimes. It is about educating children, giving them opportunities, knowledge and independence in an environment that supports healthy choices.

The setting is planning a celebration party for the children and parents/families will also be invited. Consider the following in relation to food, drink and games for the party.

The types of food & drink you would offer to people attending.

Are there any food/drinks you wouldn’t have available?

What sort of games could be organised?

What would you give as prizes?

Musical chairs Set the chairs up as you normally would for this classic game. You then need to walk around the chairs until the music stops. When everyone has sat down the person that is left out has a forfeit exercise: e.g. they have to do 5 jumps, or another suitable movement.

Pass the parcel in between layers of the wrapping paper include a small card with an activity to complete for each person who takes off a wrapper. You could include instructions like: Hop on 1 leg for a minute Do 10 star jumps Run around everyone in the circle 3 times Make up your own tasks that are suitable for the group.
