A History of GivinGEquity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative.

Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS.

In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to AIDS service organizations nationwide.

Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where

these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

Dear Friends:

Thank you for joining us for the 27th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition. This extraordinary event started in the basement of the Palace Theatre with a few scrappy, colorful hats created by the original cast of La Cage Aux Folles. It’s grown into one of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ most beloved and iconic events.

It’s a bit staggering to think that in the 26 editions of Easter Bonnet Competition we’ve raised more than $49 million. What is even more remarkable is how much more that figure represents. It is made up of tens of thousands of acts of outrageous creativity and uncommon kindness; incredible generosity of talent, time and energy; hilarious onstage antics and heartfelt, quiet moments of remembrance and embrace.

I cannot think of any other industry that comes together time and again, season after season, in ways large and small, to raise funds for those facing a wide variety of crises and challenges.

With your help and great support, BC/EFA funds a number of programs at The Actors Fund. It began with the creation of the HIV/AIDS Initiative in 1988. BC/EFA provided the first support for the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative in 1996 and we remain the program’s largest funder. Since then, BC/EFA has added continuing support for the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic, the Actors Fund Work Program, The Dancers’ Resource and more. In doing so, together we ensure that everyone in the industry has access to the safety net of social services The Actors Fund so expertly provides.

At the same time, your support allows BC/EFA’s national grants program to help more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide. In these times of continued hardship for so many, you make it possible for BC/EFA to reach men, women and children who do not have the resources or blessings that many of us gathered here today can be thankful for. Your efforts over the last few weeks – and your presence here today – will help buy medicines and fund counseling for those who would otherwise do without. Your support keeps the doors at a health clinic or a food pantry open, provides diapers for a child or bus fare to a recovery meeting.

Sometimes the calls for help can be overwhelming. They leave you wondering what any one of us can do that will make a difference. How many posters or Playbills can be signed; how many appeals made? But every dollar in a bucket, every cabaret benefit and autographed souvenir sold makes one of our grants a little larger and someone’s life just that much better.

Thank you for joining hands with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. With your help, I hope that Broadway Cares can always be a haven for folks struggling or in crisis and a home for those who want to do something about it.

Your generosity of spirit is BC/EFA’s greatest blessing. It is a rare and invaluable resource; one we steward with great appreciation and care.

Sincerely,

Tom ViolaExecutive Director

Page 6: 27th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition Program

The precursor to the Easter Bonnet Competition was an informal show in 1986 initiated by wardrobe supervisor Gayle Patton called “The Queen of Hearts.” It took place backstage at the Palace Theatre where the original La Cage aux Folles was a smash hit. Individual cast members from La Cage were judged on poise, personality and talent with the rest of the company voting by putting dollar bills in a jar for each contestant. The effort raised $1,200 for the National AIDS Fund.

The event was so much fun for the La Cage company that the following year, Gayle suggested an “Easter Bonnet Competition.” Other Broadway companies were invited to participate. Fundraising ideas flourished, bonnets became more elaborate, stars joined in as presenters and performers and by 1990 – when it was presented on stage at the Majestic Theatre – the Easter Bonnet Competition had become the Broadway community’s premier AIDS fundraising event.

Produced by Suzanne Ishee and a host of dedicated coordinators and volunteers for its first eight years, the Easter Bonnet returned to the Palace Theatre in 1995, produced for the first time by the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS production team. In 1998, the show moved to the New Amsterdam Theatre where for nine years it felt as much at home as the peacocks that decorate the theatre’s ornate interior. In 2007, the event followed The Lion King to the Minskoff Theatre.

TOTAL: $49,841,640 Today we stage the 27th edition. Broadway Cares is deeply grateful to all whom, over the years, have made this event into a wildly successful fundraiser and a yearly celebration of the theatre community’s commitment to those facing the challenges of AIDS and other health-related emergencies.

COLLeCTIONs VOLuNTeeRs

An army of 141 tireless volunteers and BC/EFA staffers enhanced the Easter Bonnet Competition fundraising efforts this season. They held buckets and sold autographed memorabilia in the lobby of Broadway and Off-Broadway theatres alongside company members of participating shows. Over the course of the six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 1,842 shifts at 834 appeals. Our sincere thanks to these unsung heroes: BC/EFA’s famed bucket brigade!

Page 21: 27th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition Program

The work of 121 food programs across the country received good news in January as Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS awarded its first round of annual grants, which totaled $1,505,500.

A successful Gypsy of the Year fundraising effort bolstered the generosity and determination of the theatre community and Broadway Cares’ loyal donors, enabling BC/EFA to award the grants to 121 food pantries, congregate meal and meal delivery programs nationwide.

With this year’s grants, Broadway Cares was able to maintain the record-setting level of grant-making set in this category last year.

In the current economic climate, affording healthy food choices is a significant challenge for many. According to the USDA, more than 23 million people in America live in “food deserts,” which are urban neighborhoods and rural towns without ready access to fresh, healthy and affordable food. These mitigating factors are made even more challenging with the costs of medications to fight HIV/AIDS and its symptoms.

In 2013, Broadway Cares awarded food service and meal delivery grants, ranging in size from $5,000 to $35,000, to organizations in 36 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Recipients include outreach centers, food kitchens, transitional residences, outreach ministries and personal home care programs.

“There is no more important part of BC/EFA’s grant-making mission than ensuring that a person who is sick has a decent meal,” Broadway Cares Executive Director Tom Viola said. “Certainly for people living with HIV/AIDS, good, nutritious food is an essential component of lifesaving medical regimens are to have a lasting impact.”

Since 2006, BC/EFA has, with the extraordinary generosity and support of donors and the entire theatre community, awarded more than $9.7 million in grants to food pantries and meal delivery programs across the country.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS surpassed the $3.45 million mark in grants to South African HIV/AIDS organizations – including $135,000 awarded this year – thanks to the tireless fundraising efforts of Disney’s acclaimed production of The Lion King.

This marks a significant milestone in a long-term partnership between the Tony Award-winning musical and BC/EFA, made possible by the commitment and generosity of the hundreds of professionals on stage, backstage and behind the scenes at The Lion King on Broadway and across the country.

Since the show first began fundraising for Broadway Cares in 1997, the Broadway and national touring productions have raised more than $6.2 million with $3,451,000 going to South Africa. An additional $2.7 million has been awarded to the seven vital programs of The Actors Fund and more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations across the United States.

In recognition of this extraordinary fundraising and in honor of the South African company members who have joined their American cast mates in these efforts, BC/EFA has sent at least 50 percent of the monies raised by The Lion King companies to AIDS and family service organizations in South Africa, a country beset with the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world.

“Well over 200 South African actors have worked on The Lion King over the course of its life and they are at the heart and soul of the show,” said Thomas Schumacher, Producer and President of Disney Theatrical Productions and longtime BC/EFA Trustee. “It is humbling to realize what our Lion King family has been able to give back to their glorious country. This staggering achievement is the result of hundreds of dedicated individuals from all nations working tirelessly, selflessly and on their own accord. We stand in awe of their accomplishment.”

BC/EFA salutes The Lion King family. We look forward to our ongoing collaboration and unique outreach, even as we look to the day when a vaccine for AIDS makes our concerted efforts obsolete.
