SYDNEY - THE EMERALD CITY

Sydney, with its tall skyscrapers, busy traffic streets, road signs, impressive shop
windows, its vast urban sprawl and palm trees, resembles Los Angeles a lot. Yet,
despite its American veil, its inhabitants are closer to the English in terms of character,
obviously owing to historical reasons. But much of the Englishness is now changing,
starting with the artistic exodus from Melbourne to Sydney. Some say that Sydney is
New York without the intellect. People are mostly concerned about whats in and
whats out, in terms of the social scene. Melbourne, its rival city, is a much moreclass-conscious city, where kids are sent to good schools and people still gather in
clubs.
A
However, theres also a bright side to Sydneys lifestyle. It has become highly
cosmopolitan. With a population of over three and a half million (the largest among
Australian cities), you can also eat in a wide variety of ethnic restaurants, including
Aboriginal ones.
B
Furthermore, in recent years Sydney is being transformed into a centre for the arts. It
enjoys Californias climate and is becoming more European in fashion and culture. Formany people it is becoming an emerald city. For good or bad? Decide for yourself.
C
Australias a vast country full of amazing natural sights, such as Ayers Rock, the
Pinnacle Desert near Perth, the Kalgoorlie gold mines and the longest coral reef on
Earth, the Great Barrier Reef. But which is the first city that comes to your mind when
you think of Australia? Naturally, Sydney. Its the most outstanding city in the whole of
Australia. In fact, many even mistake it for Australias capital (even though thats
Canberra).
D
Sydneys first characteristic is its breathtakingly beautiful harbour. If you look out, you
wont miss the imposing Sydney Opera House overlooking the harbour, which isconsidered the citys symbol. Then, there is Harbour Bridge, the next most important
city landmark. Not to be forgotten are Sydneys most beautiful beaches that run for
kilometres, kissing the turquoise blue waters of the Tasman Sea. Sydney doesnt have
many old buildings, but it has taken care of the ones it has, in particular, St. Andrews
Cathedral and the charming campus of Sydney University, founded in 1854.

REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES HELP YOU TEST-DRIVE YOUR DREAM JOB
There is a big difference between thinking you will like a profession and knowingit. But how do you reach that level of certainty? Real-life experiences in a field can be the best
teacher when searching for the right career path.
In some instances, real-life experiences allow students to find out they are barking
up the wrong tree, so they change fields of academic study entirely. Take, for example, students
studying to become teachers. Once they start student-teaching, a terrifying realization can take
place. Its the trauma of Oh, I really dont like being in the classroom, then spending all night
on lesson plans! Its horrible to watch and its horrible to go through, but its certainly a
valuable lesson to learn before you get the degree and are out searching for a job. On the other
hand, some students may realize they are on the right career path but discover they want to work
at a certain company or in a particular environment. There are many ways to learn these lessons,
beyond the traditional semester-long internship. There are several steps any student can take to
delve deeper into their dream career.
Research Learn as much as you can about your dream career and the people and
organizations that are most successful in the field. Find out what values are associated with that
career and whether they are in line with your values. What is the lifestyle of the people in this
field of work like? What is the work like on a day-to-day basis?
Find a mentor When looking for a mentor, look for a person who has a strong
passion for their work. A mentor is ideally someone with expertise and longevity in the field and
has the ability to teach.
Spend some time The only way to truly discover if a job is your dream job is to
spend some time doing it! Arrange to spend time with your mentor, ask lots of questions and pay
attention to how you respond to that experience.
Investing time in test-driving a dream job during college allows a student time to
set a new course well before graduation comes. By spending the time now, it increases the
chances that the first job out of college really will be your dream job!

4 Carefully read the text below and then do the exercise that follows.
HOW TO COMPLAIN....... AND GET RESULTS!
No matter how careful a shopper you are, at some point you wont get the service or
product you paid for. Thats the time to complain! No one likes a whinger, and most people
dont enjoy conflict, but complaining is appropriate in some situations. When making a
complaint, getting something off your chest is not your goal. Your goal is to solve a problem.
A few tips can make the complaint process more effective.
1. First of all, you should be clear as to why you are dissatisfied. Was it the way you were
treated? A wrong decision? Defective goods? What exactly went wrong? What do you see as
the flaw in the item you have bought, and then how do you want this to be resolved after you
complain. Consider the way you are going to complain. Its hard to ignore a complaint that ispresented in person. So, take the product you have purchased back to the shop, or attempt to
have the service done over. Be friendly. Smile. Dont be shy to use a bit of humor. Be likable,
but expect action.
2. Do not speak angrily to an employee. There is no point in losing your temper. Think
for a moment before you complain. Dont let the emotion of the moment get to you. Are you in
a bad mood about something else? Is the problem the employees fault?
A. PUT IT ON PAPER
C. GO UP THE LADDER
B. TAKE A DEEP BREATH
D. SAY HOW YOU CAN BE REACHED
E. IF POSSIBLE, COMPLAIN FACE-TO-FACE
F. KNOW THE RULES
H. STICK TO THE FACTS
G. GET RESULTS

3. Are you dealing with the right person? Does he or she have the authority to act on
your complaint? Dont give up! Ask to see the manager or someone from the customer
service department. It may be necessary to communicate with them several times before
taking the next step.
4. Be ready with the details of your complaint. Retain all receipts/invoices, letters and
e-mails regarding products and services that you may have purchased/received. These include
the time of sale or service, the names of people and products involved, and the specific
problem you encountered. If you are asked to present these at any stage then present copies
and keep the originals yourself.
5. The company might have a complaint procedure, so follow it. Meanwhile, make an
attempt to find out your rights. This may take patience and persistence, but it will help solve
your problem. Dont be put off. If you dont get anywhere the first time you complain, try
again.

5 Read about three people talking about keeping fit and answer the questions.
Tim
Tim has been doing a paper round since he was twelve. I needed some extra pocketmoney so I thought that would be the best way of getting some. Its not easy, though, getting
up in the cold, dark winter mornings and delivering papers in the pouring rain! Tim has to cycle
about ten kilometres every morning before he goes to school so he gets a lot of exercise that
way. I found it was tough on my legs at first but after a while they got used to it. Sometimes I
race against the other kids who are doing a paper round to see whos going to finish first! Tim
will be sixteen next year and hes decided to take a part-time job in a music shop instead of his
paper round. Obviously, thats not going to keep me fit so Im going to have to think of
something else to do. Maybe Ill go jogging with my dad!
Maggie
Maggie thought she didnt need to get fit until she went to an aerobics and jazz dance
display at her local sports centre. I was really impressed by the way all those girls moved so
fast and I really liked the funky music. That was enough to make her try and find some
aerobic classes near where she lived. I made some enquiries at the local library and found out
that there were aerobic classes twice a week at a nearby town and jazz dance classes every
Saturday as well. I signed up immediately! Maggie is lucky in that her mum can take her to the
classes in the week and she catches the bus on Saturdays for the dance classes, so travelling
isnt too expensive. Shes even discovered that shes got a hidden talent for jazz dance!
Fortunately, Ive always been fairly flexible so Im able to do the dance steps pretty well. Im
also lucky in that Ive got an amazing dance partner in my cousin Sam!
Adam
Adam is swimming champion of his school and a member of the junior national team.
My way of keeping fit is through swimming. Ive never liked any other sport. My parents were
keen for me to take up tennis but I just wasnt interested. He could swim the length of the
swimming pool by the age of seven, which is quite unusual for a child of that age. Since then,
Adams become a top swimmer and he travels around the country going to swimming galas and
competitions.I train five times a week and I watch my diet carefully, he says. If you are fit,
you find everything in life easier: running for buses, helping with the heavy shopping, and even
concentrating on your schoolwork. Fitness has to do with both the mind and the body!
