Choose carrer with care or you may have to restaShifting careers is not aneasy task. At the same time, you cannot live the wrongchoice for a long time. To en- joy a long-term successfulcareer, the decisions you takein the early stages of your career should be right, espe-cially in choosing the field, course and the first job. Mak-ing these choices can be long, complicated and emotionallydifficult. You have to consider several parameters like your personality, focus levels, in-terests, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, values, beliefs,

preferences, financial con-straints, cultural background, location, personal commit-ments and expectations of family and friends. Some of these factors do notseem to be important, duringthe decision making process. But as you begin to pursuethe choice, you realise howthey affect your success andprogress. In such case, youmay have to rework from thebeginning. The constraintsyou discover can make youfeel frustrated and lose con-fidence in your abilities. Even-tually you settle for somethingless than what you are ca-pable of achieving. Sometimes

you could be overconfidentabout your abilities and makewrong choices. So, if yousee yourself falling in thesetraps frequently, it is better you take expert help like ca-reer preference tests or counselling. Highlighting theimportance of making the rightchoices in the early stage of career, much research is go-ing into the area. Severalmethods have emerged tohelp an individual determinethe most suitable field for himand to assess his successprobability in a particular

field. Even educational insti-tutes and businessorganisations are extendingsupport to their subjects byproviding counselling ses-sions. The following is someguidance to help you makebetter choices:Your Personality: Per-sonality is the most importantfactor that should be - con-sidered when deciding oncareer option. According toa recent research, the fol-lowing . are some commoncategories of personalitytraits and their correspond-ing career orientations: Like physical activity- pre-fer occupations like farming,

agriculture and forestry Spend time organising, in-vestigating, understanding(cognitive activities)- biolo-gists and professors Socialise, manage good in-terpersonal relationships-clinical psychology and so-cial work Vociferous- man-agers, lawyers and publicrelations executives Ex-pressive and creative-adver-tisers or musiciansHowever, you can have acombination of these traits. If your personality is a compli-cated combination of these

traits, your decision-makingprocess will consume somemore time. You can focusmore on other factors likeyour credentials and availa-bility of resources in thiscase.Explore interests: Make alist of activities you like themost. Then make a list of ca-reer options you are consid-ering. Now match your ac-tivities list with career optionslist. That is, evaluate howmany activities you like areconstituents of a specificcareer option. Choose the op-tions that involves maximumnumber of activities you en- joy performing.

Try options: This is baon job shadowing. Obsepeople in various jobs and to them. Understand whtakes to succeed in thoroles. Get an insight intoadvantages and difficultiethe job. See if you canyour hands on their routasks and evaluate whetyou are suitable for the There are a number of wto find out which careertion is the best suitableyou. But you should be ing to experiment with thIf you feel that you need h

talk to your family, teachbosses or approach counslors professional advise.you can even make useassessment tests websites. However, to them you should understtheir metrics and methoAlso make sure they pupular to avoid rude shoin the future. PVC RIGID PIPESIntroduction

Rigid PVC pipes and flexible tunings are widely used in chemical and water irrigation indus-tries for their excellent chemical resistance, good electric resistance properties, non toxicity,self-extinguishing nature, good ageing characteristics, excellent gas barrier properties, avail-ability in a wide range of bright and attractive colours, and in varying degree of hardness. PVCpipes are light in weight, rated for use under pressure, easy to install and have low maintenancecost. They also have low frictional loss and are non-conducting. In terms of cost PVC pipes inall sizes upto 3" are cheaper than metal pipes. Above 3", cast iron pipes are normally used. For

1" line with PVC pipes, saving in total installation cost is 30 percent. Over 3" installation, with PVCprices falling, and because of continuous increase in steel prices, this situation is better infavour of PVC conduit pipes. Asbestos cements pipes are by far the cheapest but their use isfast declining in view of their brittleness and uncertain availability of quality asbestos fibre. RigidPVC electrical conduit pipes and water supply pipes are fast replacing the cold metal pipes usedformerly. The pipes of 15 mm, 65 mm and 75 mm, nominal diameters have ready market and fetchcash sales Process of ManufactureThe manufacture of rigid PVC pipes and flexible tubings from basic raw material like PVC resins, plasticizer, stabilizer and other ingredients is done in two steps :(i) Preparation of PVC Compound(ii) Processing of compound into pipes and tubingsIn the preparation of PVC compounds all the ingredients of the formulation are weighed and keptseparately. The high speed mixer is cleaned and fed with the resin and stabilizer. The mixer isstarted and charge is allowed to be heated due to frictional heat. When the temperature of theresin reaches 60 C, plasticizer is added and the mixing is continued for another 5 minutes. Thematerial is then discharged from the mixer in a tray by opening the exhaust valve. This mix, calledPVC dry blend, can be used directly for the manufacture of rigid PVC pipes. In the case of flexible PVC tubing, the dry blend obtained from this process is fed to a heated extruder, fitiedwith a granulating die. In the extruder, the dry blend is further plasticised and is extruded in the formof strands which are cooled by passing through a water cooling tank, and are cut by a granulator into small granules. The processing steps for the manufacture of PVC pipes and tubings from PVCcompound are as under :(a) Cleaning of the extruder is done and the die of required size fitted.(b) The sizing die is selected according to the size of the pipe.(c) The barrel and die of the extruder is heated.(d) When the required processing temperature is reached the extruder is started.(e) The raw material is fed through the hopper.(f) The cooling water tank is filled with cold water.(g) When material is extruded in the form of a pipe through the die the same is then passedthrough the sizing die and then further cooled by passing it through the water tanks.(h) The cooled pipe is passed on to a take off unit which should pull the pipe at constant speed.(i) The pipe is then cut into the required length on the cutter.Formulation Ingredients Rigid Pipes Flexible rubingPVC resin (K-Value, 65) 100 100Dioctyl Phthalate 3 30Chlorinated paraffin wax - 8.5Stabiliser L 1610 - 2.8Tribask lead sulfate and lead Stearate 4 -Forcol-S (CaC03) 10.5 -Calcium Stearate 0.75 -Stearic acid 0.75 0.5Raw Materials RequiredTo manufacture 5 tons per month rigid PVC Pipes and 5 tons per month PVC Flexible tubing, rawmaterials required are :(i) PVC Resin 8,000 Kg.(ii) Dioctyl phthalate 1,200 Kg.(iii) Chlorinated paraffin wax 300 Kg.(iv) Lead stabilizers 200 Kg.(v) Stabilizers-L 1610 100 Kg.(vi) Lubricants 100 Kg.(vii) Forcol S 500 Kg.(viii) Colours dyes and pigment 100 Kg.Plant, Equipment and Machinery

Construction.(vii) Other miscellaneous equipments and accessories including water circulation pump, handtools and spares.Market Survey : The major impetus to the growth was delicensing of new processing capacityand OGL policy for imports. Rigid PVC Pipes are most effective against GI Pipes for potablewater distribution. Against limitedbudgets for rural water supply schemes, state governments have been able to cover morevillages by switching over to PVC pipes. PVC pipes have also substituted HDPE pipes for farmwater distribution. The large processing units are developing markets for diameters over 110 mmfor sanitation, sewage, water supplies and ducting application. As such there appears to be nolimiting factors against envisaged growth rate of 17 percent as recorded in the last four years. The potential for PVC pipes in buildings such as DWV (Drain, Water & Vent) and plumbing, of tapped can lead to higher growth rate.
