The Birth and Youth of Esau and Jacob

y Isaac was 40 when he married Rebekah

y Isaac was 60 when Rebekah gave birth to Esau and Jacob

y Esau: skillful hunter, man of the field

y Jacob: quiet, living in tents

y Isaac loved Esau (because he was fond of game)

y Rebekah loved Jacob

Summary

Isaac prayed for his wife because she was barren, and the Lord answered his prayers. The twins struggled with

each other while in her womb. And the Lord said to her. Two nations are in your womb, A nd two peoples born of

you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other and the oldest will serve the younger. Esau came outfirst and he was red, his body like a hairy mantle. Jacob came out holding Esaus heel.

Esau Sells His Birthright

y Esau was famished (Therefore he was called Edom)

y Thus Esau despised his birthright

Summary

Jacob was cooking stew and Esau came in famished. Jacob wouldnt give Esau anything unless Esau sold him his

birthright. So Esau sold his birthright for some bread and lentil stew.

Genesis 26

Isaac and Abimelech

y Isaac went to Gerar, to King Abimelech of the Philistines

y God told Isaac not to go to Egypt but to settle as a alien in the land that he shows Isaac, and if Isaac dose the Lord

will fulfill the same oath he fulfilled for Abraham for Isaac.

y Isaac settled in Gerar and called Rebekah his sister.

y King Abilelech saw Isaac lovin on Rebekah and called him on it. (Isaac was afraid he would be killed because

Rebakah is so pretty)

y Abimelech warned all the people that whoever touches this man or his wife shall be put to death.

y Isaac sowed seed and reaped a hundredfold he became so wealthy that the Philistines envied him. And so

Abimelech told Isaac to go away because he had become too powerful for them.y Isaac settled in the valley of Gerar

y Isaac dug up the wells his father had dug because when Abraham died the wells had been filled in by the

Philistines.-1st well = Esek because the herders of Gerar disputed earnestly with him.-2nd well= Sitnah because they quarreled over it again.

-3rd well= Rehoboth because they did not quarrel over it

(Now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land)

y Isaac went to Beer-sheba where God said will bless you and make your offspring numerous for my servant

Abrahams sake-So Isaac built a alter, called on the name of the Lord, pitched his tent, and his servants dug a well.

y Abimelech, Ahuzzath (his adviser) and, Phicol (the commander of his army) went to Isaac.

-they said we see the Lord is with you, so let there be a oath between us and let us make a covenant with you soyou will do us no harm, just as we have done no harm to you.-he made them a feast, and they ate and drank

-Isaacs servants found water in the well they had dug and Isaac named it Shibah.

Esaus Hittite Wives

y Esau married Judith (daughter of Beeri the Hittite) & Basemath (daughter of Elon the Hittite) at 40 yrs. Old.-they made life bitter for Isaac & Rebekah.

Genesis 27

Isaac Blesses Jacob

y Isaac is old.

y Isaac tells Esau to go hunt game and then prepare savory food for him so that he can bless Esau before he dies.

y Rebekah hears all this and tells Jacob to go get 2 choice kids from the flock so that she can prepare it for Isaac and

Jacob will be blessed.

y Jacob says but Esau is harry and I am not what if dad can tell and I bring a curse upon myself instead of a

blessing.

y Rebekah said Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my word, and go, get them for me.

y Jacob wore Esaus best garments and the skins of the kids on his hands and the smooth part of his neck.

y Isaac said the voice is Jacobs but the hands are Isaacs. He smelt the smell of his garments and blessed his son.

y Smell of my son=smell of field that the Lord has blessed

-God give you dew of heaven, fatness of the earth, plenty of grain and wine.

-Let peoples serve you, nations bow down to you-Be lord over your brothers-people who curse you= cursed

-people who bless you= blessed.

Esaus Lost Blessing

y Esau came back and prepared savory food for his father but Isaac said Jacob came deceitfully and he has taken

away your blessing.

y Esau cried a great bitter cry and begged his father for a blessing too.

-see away from the fatness of the earth shall your home be, away from the dew of heaven on high, by your sword

you shall live, and serve your brother, but when you break loose, you shall break his yoke from your neck.

Jacob Escapes Esaus Fury

y Esau is planning to kill Jacob when Isaac dies

y Rebekah hears this and tells Jacob to go stay with her brother Laban in Haran, and when it is safe she will sendfor him.

y Rebekah told Isaac that if Jacob marrys a Hittite woman what good will her life be to her.

Genesis 28

y Isaac blessed Jacob and told him he will not marry a Canaanite woman.-instead go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel (your mothers father) and take one of Labans daughters as

your wife

y Blessing

-God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and numerous-become a company of peoples

-give you the blessings of Abraham to you and your offspring with you-take possession of the land

Esau Marries Ishmaels Daughter

y Esau saw that the Canaanite women did not please his mother and father so he went to Ishmael and took Mahalath

(daughter of Abrahams son Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth) to be his wife in addition to the ones he already had.

Jacobs Dream at Bethel

y Jacob left Beer-sheba and went towards Haran.

y He stopped laid his head on a rock and had a dream

-ladder to the heavens-angels of God were ascending and descending on it

-Lord stood beside him and said

-I am the Lord-the land on which you lie I will give to you and your offsprings

-your offsprings will be like the dust of the earth, you will spread abroad the north south east & west

-all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and your offspring-I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you

y When Jacob woke up he took the stone pored oil on it and called the place Bethel. But the name of the city wasLuz at 1st.

y That place will be Gods house and of all that you give me I will surely give 1/10th to you.

Genesis 29

Jacob Meets Rachel

y Jacob went to the land of the people in the east.

y He saw a well with sheep around it, the shepherds would roll the stone from the well and let the sheep drink and

when they were done they would roll the stone back.

y They cant water the sheep until all of the sheep have gathered.

y Rachel (Labans daughter who kept the sheep) came up, and when she did Jacob rolled the stone away and

watered the sheep of Laban.

y Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud and told her he was his fathers kinsman

y When Laban heard the news he came and meat Jacob and embraced and kissed him. Jacob stayed with them a

month.

Jacob Marries Labans Daughters

y Laban had 2 daughters-oldest: Leah

-lovely eyes-younger: Rachel (Jacob loved Rachel)

-graceful & beautiful

y Jacob said I will serve you 7 yrs for your younger daughter Rachel

y Jacob served for 7 yrs but they only seemed like a few days because of the love he had for her

y When the 7 yrs were over Laban gathered the people of the place and made a feast but instead of giving Jacob

Rachel Laban gave Jacob Leah. And Jacob and Leah did it.

y Laban gave his maid Zilpah to Leah to be her maid

y Laban said we do not give away the younger one before the older one.

y You can have Rachel if you serve me another 7 yrs.

y Laban gave his maid Bilhah to Rachel to be her maid.

y When the Lord saw Leah was unloved he opened her womb but Rachel was barren.

y Leah had a 4 sons1. Reuben

Genesis 30

y Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children and she envied her sister

y Rachel gave Jacob her maid Bilhah so she could have children

y Bilhah conceived a son and Rachel named him Dan, and another son named Naphtali

y Leah saw that she no longer beard children so she gave Jacob her maid Zilpah.

y Zilpah conceived Gad and Asher.

y Reuben brought his mm leah some mandrakes but Rachel wanted some to so in exchange Leah gave Rachel somemandrakes and Rachel let Leah sleep with Jacob.

-God healed Leah and she had a 5th

son named Issachar.-God has given me my hire because I gave my maid to my husband

-leahs 6th son= Zebulun

-Leahs daughter = Dinah

y God remembered Rachel

-Rachel had Joseph and said May the LORD add to me another son!

Jacob Prospers at Labans Expense

y Jacob said to Laban let me go through your flock and take every speckled sheep and black lamb. For any I take

that are not speckled will be considered stolen.

y Laban took all his speckled and spotted sheep and put his sons in charge of them and then he put a 3 day journey

between Jacob and himself.

y Jacob took fresh rods of poplar and almond and plane and peeled white streaks in them, exposing the white of the

rods. He set the rods that he had peeled in front of the flocks in the troughs. And since they bred when they came

to drink, the flocks bred in front of the rods, and so the flocks produced young that were striped, spackled, andspotted. Jacob did this to the strong animals so he had the strong animals and Laban had the weak ones.

Genesis 31

Jacob Flees with Family and Flocks

y Laban no longer favored Jacob as he did before

y The Lord said to Jacob go back to the land of your ancestors and I will be with you.

y If Laban said the speckled will be your wage then all the flock bore speckled so God has taken away the

livestock of Laban and given them to Jacob.

y Jacobs dream

-the male goats were striped, speckled, and mottled.-I am the God of Bethel (where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me)-Go back to the place of your birth

y Jacob told his wifes about his dream

-they said is there no inheritance left for us?-Do whatever God has said to you.

y Jacob drove away his flocks

y And went to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan

y Rachel stole her fathers household gods

y Jacob deceived Laban by not telling him he intended to flee

y Jacob fled starting out by crossing the Euphrates and set his face toward the hill country of Gilead.

Laban Overtakes Jacob

y When Laban was told that Jacob had fled he took his kinsfolk and pursued him for 7 days until he caught up with

him in the hill country of Gilead

y God came to Laban in a dream

-Take heed that you say not a word to Jacob, either good or bad

Laban and Jacob Make a Covenant

y Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.

y Jacob told his kinsfolk to gather stones into a heap and they ate by the heap. Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, butJacob called it Galeed.

y Laban This heap is a witness between you and me today, he called it Galeed and the pillar Mizpath. I will notpass beyond this heap to you, and you will not pass beyond this this neap and pillar to me, for harm.

Genesis 32

y Jacob went his way and the angels of God met him and so Jacob said This is Gods camp! and he called theplace Mahanaim.

Jacob Sends Presents to Appease Esau

y I have lived with Laban as an alien, and stayed until now; and I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, male and female

slaves; and I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight

y Esau comes to meet Jacob with 400 men.

y Jacob gets scared and divides his people into 2 companies.

y Esaus present: 200 female goats, 20 males goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams, 30 milch camels and their colts, 40 cows,

10 male donkeys.

y Jacob sent the flocks separately to try to get on Esaus good side.

Jacob Wrestles at Peniel

y Jacob got everything he owned and crossed the ford of the Jabbok, he took them and sent them across the stream.

y Then Jacob was alone and a man wrestled with him until daybreak, the man knocked Jacobs hip out of joint.

y The man blessed Jacob and said you will no longer be called Jacob but instead be called Israel because you have

striven with God and humans and prevailed.

y Jacob called the place Peniel saying I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.

y Israelites do not eat the thigh muscle that is on the hip socket, because he struck Jacob on the hip socket at the

thigh muscle.

Genesis 33

Jacob and Esau Meet

y Jacob saw Esau coming with the 400 men and divided his children among Rachel, Leah and the 2 maids.-he put the maids and their children in front

-then Leah and her children-then Rachel and Joseph last of all

-he went in front of them bowing his head 7 times before he got to his brother

y But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept

y Jacob tells Esau to go on ahead of him because the animals and the children need to travel slowly.

y Jacob journeyed to Succoth and built himself a house, and made booths of his cattle therefore the place is called

Succoth.

Jacob Reaches Shechem

y Shechem is in the land of Canaan

y On his was from Paddan-aram he camped before the city then he bought the plot of land where he pitched his tentfor 100 pices of money from the sons of Hamor.

y There he erected an alter and called it El-Elohe-Israel.

Genesis 34

The Rape of Dinah

y Dinah (the daughter of Leah) went out to visit the women of the region.

y Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite prince of the region saw her he raped her

y Shechem told his dad (Hamor) to get Leah as his wife.

y Jacobs sons were with the cattle in the field when he heard Shechem has defiled his daughter so he held his peace

until they got back

y Hamor got to Jacob at the same time as Jacobs sons came back.

y Dinahs brothers told Schechem that they cant give her to him because he is not circumcised

y Every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city

Dinahs Brothers AvengeTheir Sister

y On the 3rd day when they were still in pain Simeon & Levi (2 of Jacobs sons) took their swords and came against

the city, and killed all the males.

-they killed Hamor and his son Shechem and took Dinah out of Shechems house.

y Other brothers came

-took the citys flocks and herds-their donkeys

-their wealth-little ones

-wives

y Jacob told Simeon and Levi they have brought trouble upon him, if the Canaanites and the Perizzites gather

themselves against Jacob he and his household will be destroyed.y Jacobs sons said Should our sister be treated like a whore.

Genesis 35

Jacob Returns to Bethel

y God told Jacob to go to Luz

y Jacob his all the foreign gods and the rings in their ears under the oak that was near Shechem.

y No one pursued the because God put a terror on the surrounding citys

y There he built a altar and called the place Elbethel because thats were God had revealed himself to Jacob whenJacob fled from his brother.

y Deborah (Rebekahs nurse) died and was buried under an oak below Bethel, so it was called allon-bacuth.

y God said Jacob will be called Israel from now on.

-I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings

shall spring from you. The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give to you, and Iwill give the land to your offspring after you.

y Jacob set up a pillar with a drink offering and poured oil on it. Jacob called the place where God had spoken tohim Bethel.

The Birth of Benjamin and the Death of Rachel

y Rachel died during the birth of Ben-oni. His father called him Benjamin.

y Rachel was buried on the way to Ephrath (or Bethlehem)

y Jacob set up a pillar at Rachels grave.

y Israel pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.

y Reuben did it with Bilhah (his fathers concubine)
