This week, it has been Challenges Week in the Senior School and College. College students have had a mix of normal lessons and a carousel of activities, helping them to prepare for the UCAS process. Focus workshops have been run on the Medical professions, Arts/Education, Humanities, the Business World, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Languages/Art. There have also been sessions on how to succeed at the BMAT and EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) meetings. The week finished with the College students enjoying a College social day and barbecue.

The Senior School girls have had the opportunity to go on a number of residential visits, including Brecon, Llangrannog, Paris and Belgium and Bronze D of E. Those who remained in school, attended lessons or had various extra-curricular activities which they undertook with enthusiasm.

This term, we are saying goodbye to Mr Bruce Rogers, who has helped to cover Mrs Morrey’s maternity leave in the Physics Department and we wish him every success in his new job at Techniquest. Thanks are also due to Miss Kimberley Stewart-Mole, who has been covering Miss Cooper. She leaves us to take up a permanent job in Hampshire.

Mrs Pauline Lomax leaves us as Marketing Manager to undertake a new job. We thank her for all the work that she has done in raising the profile of the school in the local area.

Mr Paul Hunter’s role at school has changed. He is now our Events Technician, and we will be appointing a new Music Technician.

Mrs Penny Churchman is going part time and stepping down from her role on the College Leadership Team, although she will still fulfil her very important job of being Medics Co-ordinator. Mrs Sue Marusza is also going part time and we must say an enormous thanks to her for all the work she has done as Deputy Head of College. We are delighted she is staying on and will continue to co-ordinate our Oxford and Cambridge applications.

Mrs Gosney is going on secondment for a year to ESTYN. They have recognised her talents and she will be inspecting both independent and state schools full time next year. We wish her every success and look forward to her returning.

Mrs Carol Jones retires after 19 years at Howell’s. She has been in charge of the Physical Education Department and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. Under her leadership, the PE Department has gone from strength to strength.

She was the inspiration behind the Sports Hall being built and she has been passionate in her determination that we will have an Astro Turf. Lacrosse, Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Athletics, Rounders, Swimming are all sports she has taught and has taken teams to competitions, many of which we have won. Mrs Jones has encouraged numerous students over her time here and many have gone on to represent the county and national teams. It was a pleasure to welcome some of them back to her retirement party. One of them spoke on their behalf and this is what she said:

Thank you, Mrs Jones. Words cannot describe the impact you have had on not just my sporting career but my life. You have taught me about passion, integrity, commitment, how to never give up and you have given so many students the chance to reach their potential. My sisters and I are so lucky to have been taught by you and it shall never be forgotten. I know the school will miss you but your legacy lives on in fields, on the pitches, and in sportswomen across the world.

Mrs Jones has organised numerous sporting tours to different parts of the world and I know how much the students have enjoyed and benefited from these wonderful experiences.

A caring tutor, girls in the Senior School have had the benefit of her time and advice. Her enthusiasm for sport for life shines through and she encourages everyone to take part in sport at Howell’s.

Through Mrs Jones' dedication and commitment to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, over two and a half thousand girls have gained bronze, silver and gold awards, and, since 2005, many boys have also participated at gold award level.

Before Mrs Jones came to Howell's, the Scheme hardly existed in school but from the time of her arrival she worked energetically to build it up, advising on the requirements for and overseeing all sections of the award.

In particular, Mrs Jones has been responsible for obtaining and organising all the necessary navigation and camping equipment for the expedition section, training the students and organising all the assessments.

She has devoted numerous weekends, summer evenings and part of her holidays to make it possible for the students to gain their awards. The logistics involved in organising the equipment, transport, staffing and assessment for so many students have obviously been complex and time-consuming but Mrs Jones has never wavered in her enthusiasm. Apart from the sense of achievement in completing their expeditions and, in many cases, finally going to St James's Palace to be presented with their gold awards, the students have developed many valuable skills, such as teamwork, self-reliance and independence, which will benefit them for life.

Thank you, Mrs Jones, for all you have done for generations of students at Howell’s. We will miss you and wish you a long, happy and I am sure, active retirement.

INHERITANCE

You handed it to me

Tentatively, gently,

The creased spine nestled

In the palm of my hand.

Safe.

With dog-eared corners,

Tender as daffodil petals,

I felt the pages – butterfly

Wings imprinted with a silvery

Language – flutter fiercely, beating out

A rhythm of legend and

Pride.

As the dust motes of

A nation whirled

Before me, the cursive

Reverberated with anthemic melody,

The curlicues singing out the

pained whisper of hope reflected in

Your eyes.

Even now, my fingertips caress

That old, weathered spine

Their touch exploring the grooves

Of the engraving ‘Wales’

HOWELL’S SENIOR BARD WINS GDST POETRY PRIZE

Exciting news from the English Department! We are delighted to announce that Reem A, Howell’s Senior Bard 2013, has been awarded first place in the Middle Prize category of the GDST Laurie Magnus Poetry Prize.

Reem’s winning poem ‘Inheritance’ was also the poem that she entered and won the ‘Howell’s Senior Bard’ with this year!

Caroline Hoare, the GDST Director of People, who read English at university and is passionate about poetry, described Reem’s poem ’Inheritance’ as…

“A very emotional and well-crafted poem. Through the vivid description of the old and much-loved book, I felt very strongly the writer’s profound sense of connection with her family and her country. The structure of the poem was very effective too in the way it emphasised the emotions experienced - safe, pride and your eye.”

Congratulations to Reem on this well-deserved and outstanding achievement! Reem will be receiving a certificate and a cheque for £100 as her prize. Here is Reem’s winning poem for you to enjoy.

MOLLY CHOSEN FOR THE ONLY KIDS ALOUD CHORUS

Congratulations to Molly R, Year 8, who has been chosen, for the second year running, to be part of the Wales Millennium Centre/Only Kids Aloud Chorus from over 400 hopeful applicants.

The standard of the auditions was incredibly high and choosing the 70 members of the chorus took a lot of deliberation. Well done, Molly – we are looking forward to hearing you perform!

YEAR 7 EXPERIENCE THE SMELLS, SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF THE TUDOR AGE AT BULLACE HILL

Bullace Hill is a complete 16th century farm that has been rebuilt on 8 acres of land near Chepstow. Once a year, the site comes to life and is filled with people you would have run into when visiting a farm in the 16th century.

First, we saw the wool maker’s cottage. Each morning, she had to care for the plants by weeding the vegetable plot and chasing away rabbits. Laraib U and Claudia M

She was given wool by the wool merchant and removed its grease and dirt by brushing it off with a wool brush; then, she spun it with a spindle. She would get 2p to 4p per fleece, depending on how well it was thread and the quality of the wool. Rima A-R and India B

Our next visit was to the local dyer. He would have the responsibility of dying the fabric to sell to the community and overseas. He used a special plant to dye the fabric blue. This was called woade. He also told us about how he dyed the clothes a range of other colours including red, yellow and green. We were told that common women normally wore red while men wore blue. Grace D and Naymal S

This process took a long time, sometimes days, as if you wanted green or purple you had to dye the material twice! Caitlan W and Izzy S

After we met the dyers, we moved on to the farm, where we were allowed to help the farmer turn over the grass so that it could dry on both sides to turn into hay: we had a lot of fun. Each year, a farmer would make about ten pounds but if some of his livestock fell ill, he would have to spend most of this to replace them. Olivia B

In some gardens they had a bowling green. On holy days (Sundays and Special Festivals), they went there to play bowling. Rhian F and Caitlin P

Then we visited the kitchens. We saw the bakery and how the bread was cooked in the old stone ovens, and the dairy and how the milk and cheese was made. Megan H and Morgan R

The trip was very interesting and we learnt a lot of new things about how people lived in 1599. We really enjoyed it and we left with a lot more knowledge about Tudor life. Laiqah O and Faye A-M

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALEX THORNE, BSc AND NOW MA!

We were delighted that Alex Thorne, a Year 13 Leaver, recently completed his Masters at Cardiff University, in Mathematical Physics, having already completed his degree in Mathematics.

Alex has had to balance his A level studies alongside attending Cardiff University lectures and completing his Masters dissertation in ‘Asymptotic Expansions and Bondi Positivity in Higher Dimensional Relativity’.

An outstanding academic student, Alex will commence further studies at St John's College, Oxford in the autumn where he will be studying for a D.Phil in Mathematical Physics with full funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. He is moving into research in the field of string theory.

AS AND A LEVEL RESULT DAY – THURSDAY, 15TH AUGUST

Results will be available from 8.30am. Staff will be here to support students and to celebrate with those who achieve their grades and get into the universities of their choice.

A reminder for any students who are unable to collect their grades, Mrs Maurice can email your results to you. You can contact Mrs Maurice on: [email protected]

CARDIFF STUTTGART ASSOCIATION: ANNUAL ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION

Earlier this year the Year 12 and 13 German students were invited to participate in an annual essay writing competition, organized by the Cardiff-Stuttgart Association and open to all secondary schools in the Cardiff area. Students were asked to submit a 250 word essay about their favourite sport.

The competition is now in its fourth year and Howell’s students have once again scooped the winning prizes. The competition was won last year by Clara G. who wrote about her favourite German film- Barfuß (Bare-foot). It was won by Harriet T. in 2011, who wrote about a visit to Germany and also in 2010 by Robert V. who wrote the winning essay about his experiences of learning German.

This year we were delighted that Nikita C. was awarded £100 for her winning entry. The Right Honourable Mayor of Cardiff presided over the award ceremony on Thursday 4th July 2013 at County Hall. Zoe H. won £50, as runner up and all the participants were awarded a certificate, T shirt and book.

FOUNDERS’ FRIDAY

On Friday 5th July, we were very pleased to welcome Hywelians Barbara Forte, Nicola Davies, Sheila McFarland, Kay Powell and Joyce Shields to our Founders’ Friday and End of Term Assembly.

This included the showing of an edited version of the interview earlier this term of three Hywelians who were at school in the 1930s and 1940s, as the first part of our annual Oral History project.

We were delighted that Mrs Forte, as one of the interviewees, was able to join us. Founders’ Friday also highlights the importance of our Bursary Fund, the development of which will enable more able girls from all backgrounds to attend the school.

Following Assembly the students went outside in their houses to celebrate the Thomas Howell break with squash and cookies, while the Hywelians joined Mrs Davis, the GDST’s Director of Development, Glen Fendley, members of the Leadership Team and the Marketing and Development staff for tea and cakes.

EVEREST BASE CAMP

Reaching Everest Base Camp was everything that I had hoped it would be! The huge number of small orange tents pitched don combination of glacial ice and glacial moraine was quite amazing.

The slow walk up to Base Camp over two weeks ensured that we had acclimatized for the 18,300 feet. Gorak Shep, the last semi permanent village two hours walk from Base camp is a very isolated and barren place, situated alongside the shrinking Khumbu glacier and on a large boulder field. Apart from the helicopter there is only one other mode of transport – by foot! It was an honour and privilege to meet Peter Hillary, the son of Edmund Hillary in the Lodge at Gorak Shep, as he spent time there with his family for the 60th anniversary of the first Everest ascent.

The views were stunning as the cloud lifted and lowered over the big summits of Pomori, Nuptse and Lhotse. These are the mountains I had read about and here I was seeing them for real. We were reminded of the reality of the harshness of the mountains as news came into Base Camp that three climbers had lost their lives in a summit attempt the day before. Pem, the Jagged globe Sherpa who accompanied us in the trip had summited Everest seven times, once without oxygen! That is an awesome achievement.

Lukla, the small village with the ‘most dangerous airport in the world’ reminded us once again of the unpredictable weather in this part of the world as the clouds came in and we were unable to return to Kathmandu for another two days! I have lived a dream!

MRS JONES SAYS FAREWELL AND THANK YOU

A message to all students; keep fit, stay active and most

of all… enjoy your sport!
