DANISH LESSONS WITH A SEAL OF APPROVAL
The core service of our members is teach-
ing the Danish language to adult foreigners.
These courses are typically free for students,
as Danish law ensures that all newly arrived
adult foreigners have a right to free Dan-
ish lessons. All accociated language schools
therefore provide Danish courses according to
the law – “Danskuddannelsesloven.
Our members are the only language centres
in Denmark that offer state-approved Danish
courses and programmes. Our members are
also the only institutions to conduct the exams
required by the state for permanent residency
and citizenship.
Many of these language centres also offer a
wide range of other courses, including courses
focusing on the Danish labour market, special
youth courses and courses on Danish culture
and society.
Depending on a foreigner’s residential status,
one of the following is offered:
•Labour market-oriented Danish – a 250-hour
course for beginners.
•Danish 1, 2 or 3 – programmes divided into
six modules.
Before a course begins, students take part in
an assessment of their language skills to en-
sure that they are provided instruction at the
right level.
LABOUR MARKET-ORIENTED DANISHThis is a beginner’s course for foreign work-
ers, accompanying spouses, students and au
pairs. The course comprises up to 250 hours
of instruction over a maximum period of 18
months, and is divided into five 50-hour cours-
es. Upon completion of the course, students
then have a right to enroll in a specialised
Danish programme.
DDS works closely together with the labour
market in Denmark, as well as other organ-
isations, the municipalities and legislators, in
developing a strong connection between lan-
guage learning and job seeking and career im-
provement for those new to Denmark.
THE DANISH COURSESThese are divided into three individual Danish
programmes. Each programme has six mod-
ules with the last module of each programme
concluding in a state-administered Danish
exam. This exam is a prerequisite for obtaining
permanent residency and Danish citizenship.
You can find a language school in your region
on our website: www.dedanskesprogcentre.dk.
WORKING TO IMPROVE THE CONDITIONS AND FACILITIES FOR THE LANGUAGE SCHOOLS ACCROSS DENMARKDe Danske Sprogcentre (DDS) is the national association of language schools, and currently
has 64 members in our organisation spread across Denmark.
Advertorial
This supplement will guide you on making
the best choice for you when it comes your
language needs, and choosing a language
school that will not only teach you the Dan-
ish language, but also assist in your integra-
tion into Danish society. With a wide range of
quality language schools available through-
out Denmark, learning to speak the language
has never this simple!
NEW TO DENMARK, WHERE TO BEGIN?It is, of course, entirely possible to live com-
fortably in Denmark without ever picking up
an English-Danish dictionary. In a city boast-
ing an international community as vibrant as
Copenhagen, one can easily get by without
any Danish skills whatsoever. And consider-
ing that to most foreign ears, Danish sounds
a rather amusing language, learning the lan-
guage can start to seem a little unnecessary.
However, for those who want to fully im-
merse themselves in the Danish culture, excel
in the job market and make Danish friends,
then learning the language is a must!
In this supplement you will read about sever-
al institutions and receive practical advice on
how you can better your Danish conversing
ability. Aside from the valuable information
you will pick up in this supplement, a good
place to begin your learning adventure is with

De Danske Sprogcentre (The Danish Lan-
guage Centres). The DDS brings together in
one easy-to-use website, all state-approved
language centres in Denmark so that pro-
spective students are able to decide on which
institution will serve them best. The language
centres’ core service is teaching the Danish
language to adult foreigners. Many of the
language centres also offer a wide range of
other courses, including courses focusing
on the Danish labour market, special youth
courses and courses on Danish culture and
society.
LANGUAGE SCHOOLSThe vast majority of language centres ad-
mit students on an ongoing basis and of-
fer instruction as daily, evening or Saturday
courses. The courses are also often planned in
cooperation with job centres and companies,
so to ensure that students are afforded the
necessary time to learn the language.
A beginner’s course for foreign workers, ac-
companying spouses, students and au pairs is
the first step in learning the language, and of-
ten comes in the form of a Labour market-ori-
ented Danish language course. On completion
of the course and subsequent examination,
students are able to enrol in a more special-
ised programme.
In addition to classroom instruction, many of
the language centres offer students the option
of learning Danish via online courses. Online
courses can also be completed with module
testing – and can be taken individually or in
groups. With online Danish courses, students
are able to learn Danish when it suits their
work, family and school schedules – regard-
less of time and location.
Whether you’re a first-time learner or looking
to improve on your Danish, you have to ad-
mit: There is more than one reason to try and
take a few classes.

In Denmark, you will be able to get by just
fine with English, as most Danes are decent
English speakers. However, if you have plans
to stay in Denmark for an extended period of
time, or may be moving your family here for
work opportunities, it is expected of you to
learn Danish.
If you have any reservations about learn-
ing this new language, we encourage you to
set them aside, because learning Danish has
far-reaching benefits. Benefits other than be-
ing able to communicate the basics such as
“hello”, “how are you” and “goodbye”.
BENEFITS OF LEARNING DANISHAlthough there are many, here is five reasons
why you should embrace learning the lan-
guage, and make it your mission in 2015 to
learn Danish:
1. It’s free!If you have a residence permit you are entitled
to one and a half years of free Danish lessons.
Your local municipality will help you get start-
ed on your free language lessons. There are
plenty of opportunities to learn Danish in Den-
mark and many types of courses are available
for free if you have a CPR number or a work
contract.
2. Helps you integrate into Danish societyWhen you move to Denmark, learning Dan-
ish can be an important part of the process of
settling in. Surveys have shown that learning
Danish benefits you both professionally and
socially in Denmark. Learning Danish will give

you an insight into Danish cultural and social
norms. This is important for successful com-
munication and networking, whether on a per-
sonal or a business level. Speaking Danish is
thus a key competence valued by many Dan-
ish companies.
A number of international students who want
more from their stay in Denmark, who want
to become a part of Danish culture, identify
the need to learn the language as essential to
this. Students are able to integrate better into
universities and can socialise with ease if they
are able to converse with the Danes in their
own language. For parents with children, who
will have to attend school and will be taught
Danish, it is important that they too learn the
language to be able to communicate with their
children in Danish.
3. Greater job satisfactionThe philosophy behind Denmark’s integration
programme is to combine work and language
training wherever possible, as it is more moti-
vating to be able to use the Danish language
instantly in a work environment. Also, one of
the best places to improve your Danish lan-
guage skills is in a Danish workplace.
4. Makes your move to Denmark easierAdequate Danish language skills - including a
certified exam - are also essential if you wish
to get a permanent residence permit or even-
tually Danish citizenship. It pays off to give
Danish language acquisition a high priority
during your first few months in Denmark. All
experience shows that the sooner you start
attending Danish lessons – the faster and the
better you will learn the language.
5. Make friendsSpeaking Danish is a way of communicating
your respect towards the Danish culture. By
speaking Danish you will gain the respect of
the Danes, who know that their language is
not an easy one for a non-Dane to learn. Dan-
ish language classes provide an opportunity
for you to meet people of different ages and
social groups with a common interest – learn-
ing the language is sociable.

DIFFICULT DANISHDanish is the official language of Denmark,
Greenland and the Faeroe Islands. Both
Greenland and the Faeroe Islands have their
own language too, which most of the people
speak, but Danish is used for official purposes
and taught in schools. The Danish language
has several dialects even though Denmark is
a small country. The standard language that
is called Rigsdansk originated around Copen-
hagen, and was originally based on the socio-
lect of the upper class of Copenhagen. Almost
every island has its own dialect, which can be
difficult to understand for Danes in other parts
of the country. However, the vast majority of
the population speak either standard Danish
or a social variation of it.
Danish is not exactly known as one of the most
beautiful languages in the world. Actually, the
sound of Danish always seems to amuse for-
eigners, which gives the language a certain
entertainment value. Foreigners often charac-
terise Danish as a monotone-like drawl, and
many people say that Danes speak like they
have a hot potato in their mouth. Of course,
the Danes themselves find their language both
charming and pretty, though they are aware
of the fact that Danish can be difficult to learn
for people from other countries.
The written Danish is characterised by a very
strict norm, but the spoken language may vary
YOUR GUIDE TO THE DANISH LANGUAGEDANISH 101
Learning a new language is said to be good for the brain, but just how much of a mental workout is it to learn Danish?
considerably in pronunciation. The Danish vocabulary is not based
upon an enormous amount of words but it is in principle unlimited,
as new words can freely be formed by means of compounding or
deriving. Existing words are simply used to create new words and
as a result of this, the largest Danish dictionaries contain more than
200 000 words.
INTERESTING FACTS✔The Danish alphabet has 29 letters and uses the basic 26-letter
Latin alphabet plus the three additional letters Æ, Ø, Å.
✔Danish (Dansk) is one of the North Germanic languages (also
called Scandinavian languages).
✔The language is also used by the 50 000 Danes in the northern
part of Germany, where it holds the status of a minority
language.
✔ If you want to have a go at some difficult
Danish pronunciation, try saying the word
“speciallægepraksisplanlægningsstabiliser
ingsperiode” - and yes, that is a real word!
PRACTISING DANISH ON THE INTERNETThere are many opportunities for
you to learn Danish free of charge
on the Internet. You can use so-
cial networks such as Facebook or
Twitter to exchange dialogue with
Danish speakers. You can also read
and comment on blogs, or read
Danish newspapers and take part
in the discussions at the bottom of
the page. You can also visit forums
and websites about Danish culture and interact with content pro-
viders and other forum users. For listening understanding, you can
watch Danish films and TV shows on the Internet with or without
English subtitles depending on what you need. The advantage of
watching Danish shows on the Internet is that a huge collection of
materials is right at your fingertips.
SIMPLE, YET ESSENTIAL PHRASESMake life in Demark a little easier by mastering these important
everyday words and phrases:
Hej! Hi
Goddag Hello (formal)
Hvordan har du det? How are you?
Hvad så? (informal) What’s up?

We help you navigate your way through
online Danish courses and social media lan-
guage exchange programmes, so to improve
your Danish speaking ability.
In addition to professional tuition, as you
would get at various state and private lan-
guage schools across the country, the Inter-
net offers you endless possibilities to expand
your knowledge of the language and even
practice your newly-found tongue. Online
dictionaries, chat and social networking
platforms and even online courses are great
ways not only to learn Danish, but to perfect
it through practical engagement. We list five
reasons why you may benefit from an online
programme:
MULTIMEDIA: Technology innovation has
never made learning a foreign language eas-
ier. Multimedia features found in e-learning
environments incorporate new ways to learn,
including: Videos, audio, interactive grammar
correction tools, chat boards, and instant
messaging. Essentially, there is much more
scope for interaction in the language that you
are learning.
REPETITION: In a classroom environment,
once the lesson is complete, there is limited
opportunity to go back and review or revisit

With the advent of translation applications, online dictionaries and social communication platforms, learning a language has become that much more acces-sible – and Danish is no exception.

At the UCplus language centre, located at
Københavns Kulturcenter on Drejervej 15 in
Copenhagen, they understand that students
live in a modern, busy world and that offering
a flexible, mobile education is the best way to
ensure that students learn Danish quickly and
effectively.
They combine classroom learning with online
opportunities that help students through the
first 250 hours of their Danish education.
“We know that students have lives and need
to keep up with work, studies and family,” says
UCplus section head Marianne Weischer. “We
work to understand the practical aspects of an
education and set up the perfect plan for our
students.”
UCplus’ Copenhagen location offers daytime,
evening and Saturday classes Online learning
is also available through the online learning
site flexidansk.dk.
A FREE TABLETThe Copenhagen centre is approved by the
municipality to offer the first 250 hours of
Danish education. Students that complete the
first 100 hours are given a free tablet to help
with their online immersion in Danish.
“We believe that the most effective way - per-
haps the only real way - to learn Danish is to
use it everyday in real world situations,” says
Weischer. “The tablets are a way to help stu-
dents stay plugged in when they are outside
the classroom.”
UCplus also offers Danish lessons throughout
the city - directly at workplaces - and is ready
and willing to come were students need in-
struction, even after working hours.
Students are able to take Danish classes for
free at UCplus if they have a Danish CPR num-
ber, if they are a foreign student or employee
in Denmark or married to a foreign employee
in Denmark.
SIMPLIFYING THE PROCESSThe knowledgeable staff at UCplus are able
to answer any questions that you may have,
and help you negotiate all of the paperwork
needed to help with a CPR number, find out
what your municipality offers, and get you up
and learning as simply and quickly as possible.
Students are invited to stop by anytime to get
answers to any questions that they may have.
“We know that the bureaucracy can some-
times seem overwhelming,” says Weischer.
“Our staff can answer any question that a
student may have about the school, the mu-
nicipality, how to get a CPR number, anything
that will make getting an education easier.”
Those interested should call Lotte at 44870166
or via email at [email protected].
The UCplus language centre in Copenhagen is
located just 300 metres from Nørrebro Sta-
tion, with easy access to any number of bus
and train lines.
New classes start at UCplus every week.
A FLEXIBLE, MODERN DANISH EDUCATIONUCplus understands that Danish education needs to fit a student’s busy lifestyle.

the lesson. However this is not the case with
online learning, as students are able to go
at their own pace and revert back to lessons
that they may not have fully comprehended
the first time round.
NEW LEARNING METHODS: Online courses
offer an “out with the old, in with the new”
approach to learning a foreign language.
Many online language learning platforms of-
fer tools to address reading, writing, listening,
and speaking a new language, which both
replace and supplement classroom learning.
GREATER ACCESSIBILITY: Students can
access online foreign language courses at
any time. This means that you can brush
up on your Danish during your lunch break,
complete a lesson before your morning jog,
or late at night after you have put the kids
to bed. Online courses also offer on-the-go
mobile solutions, enabling you to complete
coursework from anywhere, as your individu-
al schedule permits, without having to travel.
YOU SET YOUR OWN PACE: Online lan-
guage courses will help you learn a new
language on your own. However, this could
cause problems for students that aren’t as
disciplined. If you aren’t great at self-mo-
tivating, this could be an interesting way to
challenge yourself and to grow. But the onus
will be on you to plan, prepare, understand
the technology, and be an active learner in a
virtual classroom environment.
ONLINE DANISH COURSESIf you prefer online learning in the comfort of
your own home, and in a time that is conven-
ient to you, consider one of the many online
courses available.
One such online offering is Lærdansk. With its
Netdansk programme you can learn Danish,
wherever you are in the world. Netdansk is
a modern online tuition community for stu-
dents studying on Danskuddannelse 3.
Netdansk gives you, the student, the ultimate
flexibility. Each week new assignments are
put up for students to complete where and
whenever it suits them. Also on offer through
the Lærdansk website are weekly online web
conferences.
Students are placed according to their level
of Danish; they participate in the online-tui-
tion in collaboration with their online-teacher
and online fellow students, and get individual
response on assignments from the teachers.
For more information on how you can enrol
in an online language course, visit: www.laer-
dansk.dk.
DICTIONARIES AND TRANSLATIONThere aren’t that many free online diction-
aries, such as: the W3 Dictionary and bab.
la Dictionary. Ordbogen.com is another that
provides comprehensive dictionary services
for only a few hundred kroners per year.
Also there is Google Translate - excellent for
short machine translations and for translating
entire websites. In many cases where Danish
public/private websites aren’t translated in to
English, Google will actually generate a very
usable instant translation.

Hi Peter,How is it going? Are
you having any prob-
lems?
Hi Bente,
Not too bad. :)
Whether you have come to Denmark to work,
study or as a family you may choose to learn
Danish for different reasons. Catering for your
individual needs and circumstances there are
several schools that offer a range of course,
thus making your decision that much easier.
STARTING DANISH LESSONS There are plenty of opportunities to learn
Danish in Denmark and many types of cours-
es are available for free if you have a CPR
number or a work contract. There are sever-
al private and public organisations that offer
lessons in Danish at various levels.
There are long courses that run during the
academic year, short intensive courses and
summer courses. Depending on your needs,
time, interests and prior qualifications, the
main options listed below are available to
you:
❖ Courses at Danish higher education
institutions.
❖ Programmes and courses offered by
the local council (kommune).
❖ Courses in Danish at adult learning
centres (VUCs).
❖ Private language schools or classes
offered by private language teachers.
❖ Courses at Folk High Schools
(Folkehøjskoler).
COURSES AT DANISH HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS Many institutions offer intensive Danish lan-
guage courses at the beginning of the aca-
demic year, during the semester or as a part
of a summer university programme. Students
who are enrolled at the institution are not
usually charged a tuition fee. However, if
you’re not studying at the institution but still
plan to join a language class, then you could
be charged a fee of around 2 500 – 5 000
DKK per course.
PROGRAMMES AND COURSES OFFERED BY THE LOCAL COUNCIL (KOMMUNE) Local authorities are required by law to offer
Danish language and culture courses to all
foreign residents. The local language schools
offer courses at all levels. The courses usu-
ally consist of 18 lessons a week, though
some schools offer more intensive courses
or weekend courses. The target groups for
these courses are new immigrants and refu-
gees. For some of the courses, you might be
charged a nominal fee. It is possible to enrol
in the courses several times a year. Mandato-
ry examinations are held twice a year.
DANISH LANGUAGE COURSES AT ADULT LEARNING CENTRES (VUCS) These adult learning centres offer courses in
all general subjects for adults at lower and
upper secondary school level. In addition to
the general courses offered to Danes, some
of the VUCs offer Danish language courses
for foreigners. Each course lasts between 6-12
months and comprises 240 lessons. A small
tuition fee of around 200 DKK is charged for
each course. You can get more information
on these courses from your local council or
from the individual adult learning centre.
If you are interested in a more intensive or
perhaps a more individually designed course,
you can enquire at one of the local language
centres about private language teachers.
COURSES AT FOLK HIGH SCHOOLS (FOLKEHØJSKOLER) Some Folk High Schools offer residential
courses in Danish language and culture, ei-
ther during the summer holiday (three to four
weeks) or during the autumn and spring se-
mesters (four to five month duration). These
courses do not normally include formal tests
or examinations. The Secretariat for the Dan-
ish Folk High Schools will provide you with
further information about courses, admission
and tuition fees. Visit www.hojskolerne.dk for
more information.

SCHOOL SEARCH:FINDING A LANGUAGE SCHOOL FOR YOU
With choices aplenty, finding a language school best suited to you is as easy as ABC.
LANGUAGE SCHOOL SUPPLEMENT - SPRING 2015
20
Copenhagen Language Center offers a fresh approach to modern teaching and competitive facilities and services. The teachers are pro-fessional and dedicated and they know what it takes to learn Danish.
The quality of teaching and commitment to Danish language training will ensure that your time spent with them is successful. But it is not all about having your head stuck in the books. And that is exactly what makes the school a popular choice among internationals living and working in Copenhagen.
“Obviously, students must be prepared to work and willing to learn. But our school is about far more than the exam results,” explains depart-ment manager Julie Henriques.
Learning the language is only one part of life in a new country. Social integration such as building new friendships and forming a profes-sional network is just as important.
“That’s where I think we’re different. Not only does our school help non-native speakers per-fect their Danish. A huge amount of effort is also put into helping newcomers build new networks – social as well as professional,” Julie continues.
Becoming fluent in Danish may not be easy. However, by combining language training with the activities and services on offer at Copenha-gen Language Center, your Danish experience will be both enjoyable and successful.

HOW CAN CBSI HELP YOU?
One of the main functions of the CBSI is a
jobcentre, which helps unemployed individu-
als find jobs or gain an academic qualification.
The role of the associated language centre is
to assists foreigners in acquiring the necessary
language skills needed to find or retain a job,
or complete an education.
One of the benefits of being attached to a job-
centre is the high level of diversity it creates.
CBSI is more than just a language centre, it is
a large public workplace with many different
professions, and users that take advantage of
all the opportunities that the organisation has
to offer. Learning mainly takes place at the
language center at the CBSI building Hejrevej
10 in the Nordvest neighbourhood of Copen-
hagen or directly at the workplace, either for
whole groups, or for the individual employee
with customised courses involving a supportive
language mentor.
LEARNING DANISH WITH A PURPOSE
CBSI provides schooling in the Danish lan-
guage with the purpose of assisting students in
the workplace. Our teaching style and classes
are therefore positioned so that students inter-
act with employees from various professions
about their line of work and working condi-
tions, as part of their Danish language lessons.
Additionally, students at CBSI Language Cen-
tre have the opportunity of securing an intern-
ship or receive a salary subsidy regardless of
whether they receive benefits or can support
themselves financially.
The courses which prepare our students for
the Danish job market - Arbejdsmarkedsrettet
Danskundervisning - have always been an inte-
gral part of CBSI Language Centre’s approach
to teaching Danish. We have developed these
even further following the implementation of
new Danish labour market-related teaching
laws which took effect last year. Students
in our Danskuddannelse courses are taught
with a similar syllabus to those in the Arbe-
jdsmarkedsrettet Danskundervisning courses.
This is due to the feedback we received from
students who felt it would be beneficial to
focus on the topics of employment, working
conditions and educational background, start-
ing at beginner level. There are lessons on the
culture of the workplace, how the job market
works, and terminology relating to specif-
ic professions. Students also gain a linguistic
platform where the focus is on working lan-
guage, linguistic strategies and the use of IT
tools, to properly equip themselves for a job
in Denmark. We are currently in the process
of conducting an experimental project which
offers intensive labour market-related courses
for foreigners receiving benefits.
MORE THAN JUST A LANGUAGE SCHOOLCBSI Language Centre is Copenhagen Municipality’s own language centre, and forms part of the
Centre for Employment, Language and Integration (CBSI), and offers courses in the Danish language. The Language Cen-tre’s courses are for both beginners wanting to learn Danish as a second language, and for students wishing to enter the
Danish job market. Courses in Danskuddannelse (Danish Education) 1, 2 and 3 are on offer to prospective students.

HOW TO ENROLWe admit new students each month, with a short waiting period before the com-mencement of studies being the norm. All students taught at CBSI can take full advantage of our facilities which include a study centre, library or one of our many computer labs. For those with their own device(s) we provide free WiFi through-out the building.
Prospective students are required to book an appointment with one of our advisors in order to enrol at the language centre. Students can email [email protected] or call 82 56 51 87 for an appointment that lasts approximately half an hour during which the advisor decides what courses are suitable for the individual student.
