THE MOST RELIABLE NEWSPAPER AROUND YOU
New Light of Myanmar
Today, we mark the 68th Anniversary of the United
Nations. We have witnessed that the United Nations,
since its inception, has been resolutely implementing its
noble objectives of maintaining international peace and
security and promoting friendly relations among nations.
Additionally, it is also working resolutely to achieve
international cooperation on economic, social, cultural,
or humanitarian character, and also on promoting and
encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental
freedoms for all without any distinction.
One of the core responsibilities of the United Nations
is to build a safer and more secure world. To us, theUnited Nations is satisfactorily fullling this mission.
Peace building mission being implemented by the United
Nations is based on, among others, prevention, mediation,
negotiation, laying foundation for clean government and
good governance, encouraging increased role of civil

of the 68th Anniversary of the United Nations.
societies, rule of law and preservation of peace. At the
same time, disarmament and non-proliferation efforts are
being pursued.
Millennium Development Goals were adopted to
eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, as well as for the
advancement of social and economic development of the
people of the world by 2015. The historic implementation
of MDGs help saved millions of the poor from severe
poverty. However, development efforts need to continue
and intensify beyond 2015. It is also important that
it must be done through sustainable development. In
deterring adverse consequences for development, wemust also redouble our efforts on disaster-risk reduction
and preparedness for disasters. Other important areas
which need our closer attention are mitigating the impact
of climate change, education for women and health for
children. Encouragement and assistance to countries in
transition must be continued.
While progresses have been achieved in implementing
these goals, new challenges are also emerging with time
and under changing circumstances.
The future United Nations should be responsive to
these challenges and be better positioned to meet these
expectation. It is pertinent that the member states provide
the organization with necessary support and means.
Myanmar will join all member States and peoples in
supporting the Organization in taking up these challenges.
On behalf of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar
and its people, I would like to put on record our recognitionand appreciation for the United Nations for its unwavering
support to our political and socio-economic reforms.
On this auspicious occasion, I would like to reafrm
our commitment and support to the United Nations in its
quest for more prosperous and peaceful world.

China will improve theway it provides nancialsupport to science and tech-nology development, Fi-
nance Minister Lou Jiweisaid on Tuesday. When de-livering a report to the coun-
trys top legislature, Lou saiddespite increasing nancialinput into the sector, reforms
are needed to improve thesystems effectiveness.
Basic research relies
heavily on nancial supportfrom central governmentrather than local govern-

proportion of research anddevelopment expenditurespent on basic research is toolow, said Lou in the report to
the Standing Committee ofthe National Peoples Con-gress. In addition, the sci-

relations between the gov-ernment and the market have
not been clearly dened, af-
fecting the effectiveness of

Lou said the most fun-damental way to addressthese problems is to furtherdeepen reform of the science
and technology system. Hesaid the government willcontinue to transform its
functions and build a sci-ence-technology innovationsystem with enterprises as
major players. The govern-ment will also promote other
forms of nancial support, such as angel investment andgovernment procurement ofservices.

Google unveils services promoting free expressionSan FranciSco, 23 Oct

the internet giant said onMonday. At a presentation

be available for GooglesChrome browser and Fire-

The worlds No 1search engine presented thetwo services as well as
a new map that highlightscyberattacks taking place
around the world in realtimeas some of the mostsignicant software prod-

2010.Known for its DontBe Evil corporate motto,Google has a well-estab-
lished reputation for resist-ing authorities around theworld who seek to censor
its Web properties, includ-ing YouTube and Blog-ger. But the formation of
the Ideas group, which the
company advertises as a
think/do tank headed byJared Cohen, a former US
State Department ofcial, has raised the possibilityof the company playing a
more active role in further-ing US policy.
Under its ProjectShield initiative, Googlesaid it would host sites
that frequently came underpolitically-motivated dis-tributed denial-of-service
attacks. Because of thesize and sophistication ofits technical infrastruc-

Herpes virus tracks human
migration from Africabeijing, 23 Oct Af-
ter examining Herpes virusgenome, scientists con-rmed that early humans rstemerged on the African con-tinent before spreading out indisparate groups across theglobe.
The study, published inPLOS One, examined strainsof herpes simplex virus type1 collected throughout NorthAmerica, Europe, Africa andAsia in order to gain insighton early human migrationpatterns. We found that allof the African isolates cluster
together, all the virus fromthe Far East, Korea, Japan,China clustered together, allthe viruses in Europe andAmerica, with one excep-tion, clustered together,
Curtis Brandt, professor ofmedical microbiology at theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison and senior author ofthe study, said in a statement.
Using high-capacity ge-netic sequencing, Universityof Wisconsin-Madison sci-entists were able to develop afamily tree for the Herpesvirus, emerging in Africa, bottlenecking in the MiddleEast and ultimately spread-ing to Asia, Europe and theAmericas. Interestingly, thestudy also offers some evi-dence for the theory that Na-
tive Americans are descend-ed from Asian peoples whocrossed a land bridge fromfar eastern Siberia into theAmericas thousands of yearsago. Xinhua

Message on
United Nations Day
Dear friends,
United Nations Day is a chance to recognize howmuch this invaluable Organization contributes to peaceand common progress.
It is a time to reect on what more we can do to
realize our vision for a better world. The ghting in Syria is our biggest security
challenge.Millions of people depend on UN humanitarian
personnel for life-saving assistance.UN experts are working hand-in-hand with the Nobel

And we are pushing for a diplomatic solution to endsuffering that has gone on far too long.
Our most urgent development challenge is to makesustainability a reality.
The Millennium Development Goals have cut
poverty in half. Now we must maintain the momentum, craft anequally inspiring post-2015 development agenda andreach an agreement on climate change.
This year again, we saw the United Nations cometogether on armed conict, human rights, the environment

Bottle feeding may increase risk of stomach
obstruction in infantsWashington, 23 Oct
Infants who were bottle fedwere more likely to be at riskof developing hypertrophicpyloric stenosis (HPS), a
form of stomach obstruction, than those who were breast-fed, US researchers said on
Monday.The risk appears to be
magnied when mothers
are older and have had morethan one child, researchersfrom the Seattle ChildrensHospital in the US state of
Washington, reported in theUS journal JAMA Pediat-
rics.
HPS typically occursduring an infants rst two
months of life and surgeryis needed to correct the ob-
struction, which occursbecause of a thickening ofthe smooth muscle layer ofthe pylorus, the passage be-tween the stomach and small
intestines. Despite its inci-dence of about two cases inevery 1,000 births, its causeremains unknown. The re-searchers used birth certi-cates and discharge data inthe US state of Washington
to examine births between2003 and 2009 and found714 infants were admitted
with HPS and had a HPS sur-gery. The ndings indicatedthat the incidence of HPS de-creased from 14 per 10,000births in 2003 to 9 per 10,000
births in 2009 while breast-feeding prevalence increasedfrom 80 percent in 2003 to94 percent in 2009.The re-searchers said that about 19.5percent of infants who devel-oped HPS were bottle fed,
compared with 9 percent ofbabies who were breastfed, and the odds of an infant de-
veloping HPS also increasedwhen mothers were 35 yearsand older and had given birthmore than once.
These data suggest
that bottle feeding mayplay a role in HPS etiology,
and further investigationsmay help to elucidate themechanisms underlying the
observed effect modica-tion by age and parity, theresearchers concluded. In arelated editorial, DouglasBarnhart, of the PrimaryChildrens Hospital, SaltLake City in the US state
of Utah, said the ndings
bring us a step closer to be-ing able to drop idiopathicfrom hypertrophic pyloricstenosis. While the dataseem convincing that bottlefeeding increases the risk, the reason is not clear, hesaid. Further understand-ing of the pathogenesis of
hypertrophic pyloric ste-nosis will come from bothbasic research and more de-tailed epidemiologic stud-ies.Xinhua
Beijing, 23 Oct Sci-entists said on Tuesday theyhave found older people whoget poor sleep may havemore of the plaque or betaamyloid that is suggestive ofAlzheimers disease in theirbrains. The ndings, pub-

Greek lawmakers voted tocut off state funding to thefar-right Golden Dawn par-ty early on Wednesday, thelatest effort by the govern-ment to clamp down on aparty it has branded a neo-Nazi criminal gang.
Golden Dawn hadsteadily risen on the back ofan anti-austerity and anti-
immigrant agenda to be-come Greeces third-mostpopular party, until the kill-ing of a left-wing rapper bya party supporter last monthtriggered the governmentcrackdown.
A legislative provisionpassed by 235 lawmakers inthe 300-seat parliament sus-pends state funding to polit-ical parties if their leaders,or a tenth of their lawmak-ers, are charged with in-volvement in a criminalorganization or acts ofterrorism. The move coulddeprive Golden Dawn of a
major nancial resource.Athens has earmarked

liament last year and ap-pearing virtually immuneto frequent accusationsof violence against immi-grants and leftists, the partyhas been on the defensivesince the fatal stabbing of34-year-old Pavlos Fissas.
The killing promptedprosecutors to investigate
party lawmakers over aseries of crimes and PrimeMinister Antonis causedSamarass conservative-ledgovernment to probe thepolice force.
