In the gospel today we hear Jesus say to the deaf man, “Ephphatha! Be opened!” The man who had never heard the sound of his own voice heard the word of God and begin to speak. We hear the word of God and what happens to us?

“Ephphatha”, be opened, was spoken to each of us at our Baptism. We hear the word of God today; the voice of God is present to us in word, sacrament, church teaching and Christian insight, and in the least of our brothers and sisters. At times the venues through which God speaks to us are unpleasant and overwhelming. Who can hear of the cry of the poor

and starving by the thousands, and not be over-whelmed. In such instances we are tempted to turn a deaf ear to the cries of the poor. The seemingly inces-sant demands of those who are disenfranchised and marginalized for their rights, dignity, and justice wear us down and we tend to tune them out. For those who follow Jesus, who made the needs of others his own mission, those cries, needs, and demands must become our own agenda. “The Lord hears the cry of the poor,” and those who profess to belong to the Lord must rouse themselves from deaf-ness and be attentive to the Lord’s many and varied voices. Ephphatha! Be opened! Hear the Word of the Lord, and be healed! We hear the Word of God today — Lord we really do want to hear. Heal our deafness and make us like you, able to proclaim your healing word to our world. In Christ’s love,

Dear Friends,

“Hear the Word of the Lord, and be healed!”

Before You Said Amen During the eucharistic prayer at Mass today, what were you thinking about? What was on your mind from the moment the presider invited every-one to: “Lift up your hearts!” until you sang the “Amen” before the Our Fa-ther? We Catholics say: This is the most holy time. But what does “holy” mean here, and how do you spend that holy time? Most of us would admit that we tend to wander off a bit at this time on Sunday. Yes, we sing the “Holy Holy” pretty well, perhaps, with a strong “Hosanna in the highest!” But sometimes we don’t focus back in until it’s time for the Our Father. Where did we go? We’re pretty good at getting on board for the song that begins the liturgy, and sometimes very good at giving full attention to at least one of the readings and maybe the homily. But if someone were to tap you on the shoulder during the Our Father and say: All right, where were you the last five minutes? How would you answer this question? This is not to ask: What did the priest just do? (We know that!) The crucial question is: After I said “yes” to the invitation to lift up my heart, after we all said “yes” to that, what happened to those hearts? Did they stay “lifted up”? Come at it this way. What happens in your life, happens with some regularity, that grabs and holds your whole attention—and grabs and hold you? That’s what is asked when we are told to lift up our hearts. We are asked not simply to be quite and attention (that can happen at a good movie or concert). For us as baptized people, we are asked to lift up and give to God our whole selves, engaged with all these other selves, around this altar. What’s it like to be totally involved in some deed even for a few minutes? Next time, can you enter into the eucharistic prayer in this way? Pray For Our Parish Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Into the dry and thirsty wilderness of our world, O strong and faithful God, you come with streams of living water to quench our thirst, to cleanse our wounds, to refresh our weary souls!

Open our eyes to your presence everywhere. Unstop our ears to hear the challenge of your word. Loose our tongues in songs of praise and fearless witness to your justice.

We ask through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, and who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit. God for ever and ever. Amen. From: Prayers for Sundays and Seasons, Liturgy Training Publications. www.ltp.org

C.A.R.E. CORNER

For most of us, this Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer. So it’s only fitting that today we wrap up our summer series on “signs” of God with us. We left off last week with Jesus’ disciples carrying on His mission, which they began on Pentecost Sunday. Perhaps it was easier for Jesus’ immediate disciples to understand God’s presence among them since they had walked, talked and lived with Jesus. But Jesus knew there would be many genera-tions of disciples to come who would need assur-ances that God was present to them, which of course includes us. And this is where the gifting of the Holy Spirit comes into play (remember Pentecost?). For it is the Holy Spirit that helps us come to knowledge and wisdom of the will of God, that helps us know right from wrong and gives us the courage to choose the right path, even when it’s difficult or unpopular. When we accept and use the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we will find ourselves exhibiting such godly qualities as patience, kindness, peace and joy. Every time you witness or engage in random acts of kind-ness, conflict resolution, diplomacy or acts of charity, you can be assured that God is truly pre-sent. So how about becoming a “sign” of God’s presence today.

Soul Searchers Meeting Scheduled September 12 Soul Searchers will meet once a month to explore and discover truths in Story of a Soul: Study edition by St. Therese of Lisieux, translated by John Clarke. Therese Martin was born in France in 1873, entered the Carmel of Lisieux at the age of 15 and died at 24. Known as the Little Flower, she was canonized in 1925 and made a Doctor of the Church in 1997. St. Therese said, “Everything is a grace because everything is God’s gift. Whatever be the character of life or its unexpected events—to the heart that loves, all is well.” We will discuss the Intro, Prologue and begin the first chapter, p. 13-45. The first fall meeting will be Saturday, September 12 from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. in the Rectory Basement. The text is available at the Carmelite Center in Darien and on the website: www.icspublications.org. Mary Maloney will have three books available for purchase. Please call if interested. Hand-outs are available in the pick-up drawer under “S”. Deacon Will and Mary Maloney are group leaders. Come whenever your schedule allows and enjoy a thought provoking experience. All are welcome to attend this monthly discussion group.

RAINBOWS is a group-sharing pro-gram for children dealing with the loss of a parent due to divorce, separation, or death. Since it is necessary for emo-tional healing to take place after a sig-nificant loss, this support group provides the grieving with an opportunity to share their feelings in an accepting and confidential environment led by trained, caring, and compassionate adults. Each Rainbow session focuses on a specific topic related to the grieving process. Readings, journaling, as well as arts and crafts help the children to share their experiences in a less “intimidating” for-mat. Children from Kindergarten through 8th grade will be enrolled. All sessions are held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. on Saturday mornings beginning September 19. If you have children or know of chil-dren who would benefit from this won-derful program, or would like to be a fa-cilitator, please call: Patti Dougherty, 355-8980 ext 109 to register now.

Offering of Letters Bears Fruit This year’s Offering of Letters (last June) asked our US Representatives to co-sponsor U.S. Bill 2139. The bill does not ask for additional funding. It calls for the reform of the current 1961 law that governs our country’s foreign assistance … to more effec-tively use the money that is already allocated. After our letter writing, John St. Laurent delivered the 265 letters that were addressed to Representative Judy Biggert. At that time, she agreed to consider sponsoring the bill. Recently, John was among a contingent that delivered 70 letters to Representative Biggert from Wesley United Methodist Church. At that meeting, she told the group that she will sign on as a co-sponsor. She mentioned that the letters she receives from her constituents do have an impact on her actions. And that the Offering of Letters she re-ceived from St. Thomas and Wesley United and other churches did influence her decision to co-sponsor U.S. Bill 2139. Pastoral Care Gluten-Free Host Procedure For those who need an alternative to wheat hosts, we offer a rice-based host for Eucharist. This is the procedure for ensuring you health and safety. You will need your own pyx (a special con-

tainer for Eucharist). These are available from the Pastoral Care Office. You may wish to mark it so yours is identifiable to you as there may be other people using this proce-dure.

Before mass, bring your pyx to the sacristy. The hosts are in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator in the sacristy. Place one of the wafers in your pyx. Place the pyx on the blue plate on the gifts table in the center of the church. It will be brought forward with the gifts and consecrated.

At Communion, please go to the station near the baptismal font by the Mary Statue (Station 7). At 6:30pm mass, go to Station 2, in front of the ambo, the big lectern where the readings are proclaimed. The Eucharistic Minister will have the plate with the pyx. To ensure no wheat cross-contamination, you will open the pyx and consume the host using your own hands. Take your pyx home with you until next time.

If you are ill or in the hospital, and would like to receive Eucharist, please call the Parish Nurse Office. We will ensure that the Minis-ter of Care has gluten-free hosts available.

If you have any questions regarding this pro-cedure or need a pyx, please contact Rose or Felicia in the Parish Nurse Office.

In the hospital? Call the parish office 355-8980 and one of our parish nurses or ministers of care

will visit, bring Eucharist or assist you with your needs!

All Saints Catholic Academy Prepares Donor Recognition Wall All Saints Catholic Academy is in the process of preparing a donor wall to honor and recognize those parishioners who made an initial gift to establish the school. By mid-July, letters will be mailed to the do-nors on record to confirm listing of name and finan-cial category. Please read the letter thoroughly and respond if changes need to be made. If you believe you should be listed as part of the initial campaign and do not receive a letter, please contact Peggy Kobe, [email protected] . Once again, thank you to all parishioners who have supported All Saints Catholic Academy.

The simplest form of Planned Giving: A Bequest A will is an important document that lets you determine the distribution of your estate. It also offers a variety of creative ways for you to leave a Legacy of Faith, forever helping your parish, school or diocese. In preparing your will, you should first provide for your family’s needs. Then you may choose to bequeath to your parish, school or diocese a certain dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or whatever is left after your loved ones have been taken care of. You may also wish to name one or more charitable recipients in case your heirs do not survive you. If you already have a will, your attorney may be able to add a simple amendment (Codicil) to provide a gift to an endowment, using language similar to this:

General Bequest: I hereby will, give and bequeath the sum of $______ to the Diocese of Joliet for (name your parish, school or diocesan endowment fund).

Residue Bequest: I devise and bequeath ______% of the residue of my estate to the Diocese of Joliet for (your parish, school or diocesan endowment fund). As the legal entity behind parishes like St. Thomas the Apostle, the diocese will handle the process-ing and distribution of your bequest funds accordingly. The Diocese does not provide advice on tax or legal matters. You should obtain the service of an attorney, accountant or other professional tax and estate advisor. For additional information, contact the Development Office at 815-838-8515.
