THE TIDAL FESTIVAL brings together everything that’s great about Devonport. It combines our coastal location, our arts and culture and our community - culminating in six days of citywide arts activities in January 2017.

Importantly the Tidal Festival is about connection and opportunity – the opportunity to explore the ‘tidal’ theme, express creativity, interact with professional artists, meet new people and learn more about our city and our coastline.

Council is pleased to see the Tidal Festival continuing to grow since its inception in 2013. At this year’s Tidal Festival you can expect more activity – with a wider range of workshops and events, suitable for all ages, in a variety of locations across Devonport, from the Bluff to the CBD.

I would encourage you to embrace Tidal 2017 and join in the events and activities which celebrate our coastal locality. It’s an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and learn something new and exciting.Welcome to Tidal Festival 2017.

WELCOME TO THE 2017 Tidal Festival. We are delighted to present a varied program of indoor and outdoor activities and events. Whether it be an art, sport, environmental or recreational activity we are sure you will find something that inspires you. We have the entire community covered - from the very young to the elderly; the artistic to the athletic; the sun lovers to the nature walkers so we hope you are enlightened and entertained with our tidal offerings. Alternative sites such as the Bass Strait Maritime Centre (BSMC) and the Julie Burgess offer fascinating insights and experiences into the history and contemporary use of our port. For those who want to experience the exceptional art selected for the Tidal finalists’ exhibition by judges Jane Devery and Jane Stewart, you can visit the Devonport Regional Gallery in the last week of the exhibition and enjoy tidal talks, knot-making workshops and much more!

This bumper festival would not be possible without the generous and enthusiastic support of our investor organisations, who have come to the party and shown a genuine interest in the growth and strength of this unique festival. Our sincere gratitude is extended to all our sponsors and program partners. Festivals don’t happen without the skillful work of the festival coordinator and many ‘behind the scenes’ personnel – so a huge thank you and congratulations to all involved in bringing this festival to fruition. We look forward to seeing you at one or more of the events listed in the program. On behalf of the Devonport City Council and Devonport Regional Gallery we wish you a very Happy Tidal!

Ellie RayDirector, Devonport Regional Gallery

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCEAnnalise Rees

Tidal Festival’s artist-in-residence, Annalise Rees, navigates her way to the ‘tidal zone’ of Mersey Bluff Beach, creating and installing original artworks for all to enjoy across the entire Festival week!

Take a walk along the footpaths and discover the works nestled in the natural vegetation and structures, and seek out the artist as she builds and installs small works throughout the Festival period.

Annalise’s works have been inspired by several trips around Tasmania’s coast on a professional cray boat, including a month spent off Flinders Island in the state’s North East.

“Through the long duration of time spent at sea I began to notice the nuance and

subtleties of the fishermen working – a constant negotiation between body, vessel and

environment. The moving platform of the sea paired with the shifting horizon became

of key interest as the figures attempted to maintain a sense of poise and balance in an

ever-changing and fluid world.”

Originally from the rugged south coast of Kangaroo Island in South Australia, Annalise Rees completed a Bachelor of Visual Art with Honours, majoring in sculpture from the Adelaide Central School of Art through their scholarship program in 2004.

Annalise has exhibited across Australia and has been an artist in residence in Tokyo, New Delhi, Sydney, Hill End and Darwin. She has worked with the International Cartographic Association, Montreal and most recently was an official voyage artist on board the Marine National Facility’s RV Investigator on a two-month voyage to Heard and McDonald Islands in the sub-Antarctic.

FIRST PORT OF CALLPhotographs from the Robinson Collection

Photographer Bert Robinson established his photographic studio in Devonport in 1927, and in 1928 was commissioned by the Mersey Marine Board to photograph the Port of Devonport. The Robinson Photographic Studio would continue to do so for several decades, capturing a burgeoning period during the 20th century when imports and exports from Devonport surpassed Tasmania’s other ports combined. View this enterprising aspect of Devonport’s past at the Bass Strait Maritime Centre.

WHY HAIKU Cameron Hindrum

Haiku poetry asks us to comment on the natural world and our place in it. Relying on revered principles of economy and simplicity, a good Haiku is deceptive: an observation made within it often masks a deep and compelling truth. This workshop provides one possible framework for the conception and crafting of Haiku. Participants will explore a variety of starting points, develop and share their own work, and then explore further using the principles of Haiku in other poetic or fiction writing.
