Basking in God

Haggai 115bmdash29Psalm 1451ndash5 17ndash21 The focus in the age-level materials2 Thessalonians 21ndash5 13ndash17Luke 2027ndash38

Living God of restoration and power we want to be so occupied with your love for the world that we no longer fear the future Your abiding spirit in our midst chases out fear Guide us in the work of worship so we find our rest in you alone Amen

What has been the more common practice of using the gospel reading as the focus during this season is interrupted this week by lifting the reading

from the book of Psalms as the focus The interruption of the everyday with a day set apart for worship and praise re-minds us to bask in the God who is the source of our identity

Haggai 115b-ndash29 the prophet is told to remind the people that the grandeur of the past will pale in comparison to the grandeur God intends for the future The ldquoyet nowrdquo of verse four promises that no matter how devastating the destruction borne witness to in verse three Godrsquos restoration will be grander The prophet calls leaders of government leaders of religion and the people at large to trust in Godrsquos power to restore far more than was ever imagined in the nostalgia of past greatness

Psalm 1451ndash5 17ndash21 Psalm 145 is part of a group of psalms referred to as Book V (Psalm 107ndash150) by many commentaries According to the Common English Study Bible most of Book V ldquosuggests how the post-exilic community might refocus itselfrdquo (p 963 sidebar article) Psalm 145 is where the psalter shifts to its conclusion of praise Praise and worship serve to refocus the people of God on who we are as a people loved by our creator Throughout history it has been a common Judeo-Christian practice to interrupt the regular everyday routines of work with a Sabbath day of worship and praise

Psalm 145 is an acrostic poem with each English verse beginning in Hebrew with consecutive letters of the alphabet Using every letter of the alphabet emphasizes the praise of God being woven through all things Psalm 1451ndash5 17ndash21 covers the first five and last five letters of the Hebrew alphabet The first five verses focus mainly on

what people do The last five verses concentrate mainly on what God does Verse two connects the here and now of the present with the fullness of all time Verse three holds out the reminder that God is bigger than even the fullness of all time Verse four proclaims age as no barrier to the praise of God with older generations sharing the praise of God with younger generations as well as younger generations sharing the praise of God with older generations Verse 21 declares that the praise of God requires not merely our voices but our entire beings

2 Thessalonians is a letter of encouragement and correction to a community of believers threatened by misunderstanding 2 Thessalonians 21ndash5 13ndash17 calls believers to take comfort in finding their identity in being chosen by God The alarms and threats of the world are no competition for the God who gives eternal comfort and good hope In Luke 2027ndash38 a group of religious leaders tries to test Jesus about what happens when we die by posing a theoretical scenario Jesus responds to this test by reminding the community that they are already children of the living God

bull bull bull bull bullA common thread in all four texts this week is that the people of God are to find their identity not in the present world around them but instead in the eternal reality of God The fullness of ourselves is mysteriously only truly found in the fullness of God Finding that completeness takes the time and work of praising God both as individuals and as com-munities In different ways all of todayrsquos readings call the people of God to bask in ndash to thrive in the presence ndash of the living God

Reflecting on the Word

Connecting with lifeThe dictionary definition of bask is to expose oneself pleas-antly to warmth or to thrive in the presence of a pleasant or advantageous influence Most people will have witnessed the pure joy of an animal lounging in the warm sun If we are lucky we have experienced this ourselves Think of a time when you have simply paused and soaked up the warmth of the sun Try to remember what that felt like on the surface of your skin Now try to remember what that felt like below the surface of your skin

What words best describe this experience for you What does it mean for you to thrive in a pleasant

context Have you ever experienced thriving in an unpleasant

context How is this type of thriving different

ScripturePsalm 1451ndash5 17ndash21 talks about Godrsquos greatness being un-searchable and the psalmist claims to meditate on the splen-dour of Godrsquos majesty as well as Godrsquos wondrous works Make a three-column list with the headings of unsearchable greatness majestic splendour and wondrous works In each column list things you feel would come to mind for people who are a generation older than you In each column list things you feel would come to mind for people who are a generation younger than you Psalm 14518 promises God is near to all who call

When have you experienced the nearness of God In what ways did experiencing the nearness of God

change your actions What ways do you call for God as individuals and as

a faith community when you do not experience the nearness of God

2 Thessalonians 21ndash5 13ndash17 calls the community to stay active in their faith and hold fast to the traditions they had been taught

Name some valuable traditions you have been taught by your faith community

How do these traditions help you stay strong in your faith

What are the traditions your faith community is teaching now

Luke 2027ndash38 The Sadducees did not believe in resurrec-tion and yet that is the religious issue they engaged in a conversation with Jesus

How have discussions with people of different faiths strengthen your beliefs

When has explaining your faith to people who believe differently made your faith more alive for you

Connecting scripture and lifeThe final verse of Psalm 145 claims all flesh will bless Godrsquos holy name forever and ever In stories from the Bible giving thanks and praise for the past present and future of Godrsquos presence in the world is what sets the people of God apart

What experiences of worshipping with others are most renewing for you in your journey of faith

What changes might you individually and as a church make in the way you engage with the community that would bring renewal to the life of the community

Focus for Worship Learning and ServingWhen she needed to get away and figure things out a 10-year-old girl would jump on her bike and ride a couple of kilometres to a favourite park and a favourite tree Lying under the tree she would gaze through the leaves that fil-tered the glimmering sun the depth of the blue sky was breathtaking Lost in wonder and the sounds of Creation around she would find herself drifting higher and higher into the sky And then it would happen The world and life around would give way to an experience of something more significant something more powerful ndash a presence like none other A four-year-old boy ndash an only child liv-ing in a remote rural area making his own fun his own entertainment ndash would wander along the creek bed pick-ing up stones kicking in the dust filling his pockets with small pieces of fencing wire and chatting He did not feel alone he was aware of someone or something accompany-

ing him and so he chatted on From the very young to the most senior amongst us many will have experienced a God presence ndash whether we can name the experience as God or not Whether young or old in this fast-paced world there is a need to take a breath to breathe to pause and bask in the wonder and mystery we call God The words of the poet in todayrsquos reading from the book of Psalms tells how we can bring God into our everyday experiences and emotions Trust-ing in Godrsquos presence is a thread that weaves through all todayrsquos scripture passages How might worship be a time when people of all ages experience life giving way and they find themselves bask-ing in the warmth mystery and wonder of Godrsquos pres-ence What will you do to make it so

Engage

Words of affirmation Based on 2 Thessalonians and Luke 20Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly

For this purpose God called us through the proclamation of the Good News In Jesus Christ we are forgiven Thanks be to God

Opening the wordMoving into Psalm 1451ndash5 17ndash21 the focus scripture for age-level materials in ENCOREWhen you get completely exhausted what are some of the ways you rest If you are being chased ndash in a game of tag or by a playful animal ndash what do you do when you are out of breath

This weekrsquos reading from the book of Psalms is like a de-scription of what it looks like to be safe on base after running for your life to escape the person who is ldquoitrdquo or making it safely inside a building after chased by an energetic animal What are some ways you express thanks for this security and safety

Choose from the following

Bible story Have a storyteller present the story ldquoDavidrsquos Song of Praiserdquo (p 154)Dramatic reading Have Psalm 1451ndash5 17ndash21 read aloud three times This may be done by a single reader or different read-ers The first time have the listeners move their feet like they are running in place while the passage is read The second time have some music playing in the background while the passage is read The third and final time have no other ac-tions noises or distractions while the passage is read

After proclaiming the word you might invite those who have not already done so to move to and around the stations taking ten minutes or so with a chosen practice

Sing or listen to a song such as ldquoGod Is Our Shelterrdquo (Sea-sons Songbook vol 8 12 on Seasons Music CD vol 8 Printed music and recording also available at Seasons MP3 Down-loads wwwseasonsonlineca)

Prayers of the peopleThis prayer uses the letters of the word BASKING to drive the petitions and thanksgivings Multiple readers will give the prayer a more intimate effect but it could be done with two readers ndash com-bining Reader 2 amp Reader 3 for one reader while keeping Reader 1 separate or with one reader as Reader 2 amp Reader 3 and the congregation taking the part of Reader 1

Invite children young people and all who wish to move to the stations Others will remain seated for proclaiming the word

RespondReAdeR 1 Being together with one another and being

Poetry and Prose bull November 10 2019

Presence To see a World in a Grain of SandAnd a Heaven in a Wild Flower

Hold Infinity in the palm of your handAnd Eternity in an hour

ndash William Blake

Our sense of time is altered in moments of deep and intense experi-ence so we know what that means We feel at home in that now in that eternity because that is the only place where we really are We cannot be in the future and we cannot be in the past we can only be in the present We are only real to the extent to which we are living in the present here and now

ndash David Steindl-RastThe Music of Silence

At our first session my then-new spiritual director Carol asked about my spiritual practice I told her that my very best time for practice is early morning

ndash before my monkey mind gets too revved up My favourite practice I told her is embodied prayer Embodied prayer can be mindful gestures yoga qigong dance or complex sacred movements When my prayers are expressed in and through my body I am more fully in the present moment less distracted and more whole

Carol asked why the movement is so important to me I explained that I pray and meditate better when I remember that I live in a body and when all of me is awake and present

Carol persisted ldquoWhat makes the dancing a spiritual practice and not just exerciserdquo she asked

Such a good question ldquoItrsquos the quality of presencerdquo I answered ldquoItrsquos about

my intention to be present to the moment itself to my own body and experience and thereby to be as fully present to the Beloved as possiblerdquo

The world is full of interesting and not-so-interesting distractions And I can be very distractible When I am present I am awake to wonder discovery and a sense of being part of the seamless Onenesshellip

A Practice of Presence1 Sit comfortably in a chair with your feet flat on the floorearth Observe your grounding to the earth by paying attention

to your sitting bones and buttocks being supported by the chair yoursquore in and visualizing its connectedness to the ground Be aware also of your connection to the earth through the soles of your feet

Stay with this visualization until you know at both cognitive and physical-sensate levels that you are solidly supported in this moment ndash held to the earth by the pull of gravity

Pause and enjoy this awareness

2 Visualize a cord of light that starts at your tailbone and extends upwards along the vertebrae that channel your spinal cord In your mindrsquos eye picture this cord continuing up and out through the top of your head and connecting you to the sky

Allow this connection to the heavens to hold you upright spine relaxed yet awake in comfortable vertical align-ment

While experiencing this connection to sky remem-ber your relationship to earth

Rest in this sense of being held and supported be-tween earth and sky

3 Turn your attention to your breathing Without changing anything become aware of the natural

rhythm of your breath Notice the inhalation pause exhalation pausehellip As you notice the rhythm of your breathing say to

yourself I know I am breathing in and I know I am breathing out

Be mindful only of your breathing for a few com-plete cycles inhala tion pause exhalation pause

Whenif you find your thoughts wandering gently come back to observing your breath

This practice can be done very slowly to give ample oppor-tunity to sink ever more deeply into the awareness that you live in a body that is held and supported between heaven and earth and that moment by moment the gift of life enters the body through the breath

Bible Story bull November 10 2019

A recording of this story is available in MP3 format in the Audio Stories folder

Davidrsquos Song of PraiseBased on Psalm 1451ndash5 17ndash21David awoke to the sound of a songbird on his window ledge The sun was just starting to warm the sky and a cool breeze blew across his face ruffling his hair David smiled and stretched He was happy He breathed in deeply smelling the fresh smell of earth and the aroma of something baking in the kitchen fire He wished he could just stop time right there in that moment Everything was so wonderful and warm and alive He reached for his harp and sang a song to God

I will praise you sovereign God and bless your name forever

Every day when I wake I will sing and praise your name forever

I will praise you O Godand my children will too

and their children and all children thereafter

I will think about the beauty of all that you doand your wonders

that fill me with laughter

You are kind and fairand you always draw near

to the hearts of the ones who give praise

Irsquoll sing of your loveand all ears will hear

how Irsquoll praise you all of my days

I will praise you sovereign God and bless your name forever

Every day when I wake I will sing and praise your name forever

David wished he could feel this way forever but as the sun climbed higher in the sky the duties of the day began to weigh on his heart and he pulled himself from bed But from time to time he would sing this song again and feel that special happiness and peace that only God can give

Questions for God The practice of bringing our questionsMaterials Childrenrsquos Letters to God by

Stuart Hample (Tom Bloom Eric Mar-shall Workman Pub Co) newsprint markers notebook copies of direc-tions displayed where all can see

DirectionsLuke 20 27ndash38 the gospel reading for this week is an example of human ponder-ings There are many mysteries riddles and conundrums in life The questions have importance on Earth Rules and expectations help our societies function However Jesus teaches that life with God is a different reality1 We all have questions about God and questions we would like to ask God Some

questions are frivolous others are quite serious Together brainstorm questions for God List on newsprint

Examples Many people say ldquoGod is on our siderdquo With so many opposing teams nations and religions whose side are you really on How are you able to love everybody Did Jesus have brothers and sisters

2 Our questions may hold clues to how we imagine God Is God a judge a referee a healer a Santa a teacher When you pose your questions to God with whom are you talking

3 Read selected entries from the book Childrenrsquos Letter to God Who is God to some of these letter writers

4 As a group compile a list of questions you may want to ask God Write them down in a notebook that can be shared with others throughout the church

5 You may decide to write short letters to God and compile your own ldquoLetters to Godrdquo booklet

6 Close with prayerHoly One you who made us and are with us and within us we have many questions about life death and life beyond death Thank you for listening to our questions Help us accept that every question need not have an answer What a relief Amen

Seasons of the Spirittrade is based on the semi-continuous readings of the Revised Common Lectionary

David wished he could feel this way forever but as the sun climbed higher in the sky the duties of the day began to weigh on his heart and he pulled himself from bed But from time to time he would sing this song again and feel that special happiness and peace that only God can give

churchAll The spirit of God abides among us We do not fearOne Take courage all you people of the landAll The spirit of God abides among us We do not fear One Come let us worship

Opening prayerGod of rest and renewal we come to worship seeking what you alone can genuinely giveBreak open our gratitude that we may fully embrace your good gifts Calm our hearts minds and spirits so we may bask in the fullness of your glory Amen

Prayer of confessionBased on 2 Thessalonians and Luke 20Life-giving Godyou alone are the resurrection and the life Too often we listen to the myriad of alarms in the world around us and are shaken to our cores We see brokenness and death that cause us to doubt your power to restore life Like the Sadducees of old we say there is no resurrection Help us to trust again in your power to bring life out of death Give us the confidence to claim the strength of love in the face of fearProvide silence for individual confession Remind us again O God that we are children of the resur- rection We are the fruits of your salvation Amen

RespondReAdeR 1 Being together with one another and being

together with God gives us much needed rest and encouragement

ReAdeR 2 Almighty One we bless your holy name with songs of joyful thankfulness

ReAdeR 3 Some of us cry out for healing Some of us cry out for comfort Some of us cry out for safety Some of us cry out for protection Some of us cry out for wisdom All of us long for your nearness

ReAdeR 1 Knowing you are always God with us we look for your resurrected life in the world around us

ReAdeR 2 In the quiet of the early morning and late evening we see you In the cheers of crowds at games performances and celebrations we see you In the weeping of grief and the weeping of joy we see you

ReAdeR 3 Now may we take courage as we proclaim your works and declare your mighty acts

ReAdeR 1 God you have chosen us to be children of the resurrection Basking in our identity gives us hope for all of creation to know your love Amen

RespondReAdeR 1 Being together with one another and being

together with God gives us much needed rest and encouragement

6 Close with prayerHoly One you who made us and are with us and within us we have many questions about life death and life beyond death Thank you for listening to our questions Help us accept that every question need not have an answer What a relief Amen

my intention to be present to the moment itself to my own body and experience and thereby to be as fully present to the Beloved as possiblerdquo
