Dear Friends,

As we do every year, we are living through a feast of Jewish culture in Krakow. Jewish artists come to us from all over the world, and the audience comes from all over the world. At times I think: If it hadn’t been for the war, if not for the Shoah, we would probably have a festival like this here eve-ry day. In Krakow, in Wrocław, in Warsaw, in Łódź, and in many other large and small cities and towns. Poland was a place of Jewish life, and life is above all culture – religion, art, learning – in a world, civilization. However, our yearly me-etings are not devoted solely to remembering. We remember because we will never forget – not the good things, nor the bad things. Just as it is in life. Yet in our annual gathering the most important thing is something else. The most important thing is the future of Jewish life, the future of Jewish culture – in Krakow, in Poland, in the whole Diaspora, and in Israel. That is what the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow has really been for about 24 years. I welcome you most heartily to hospitable Krakow, to Kazimierz, where the past, present, and future of Jewish life – of Polish- -Jewish life – come together.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I cordially greet all of you arriving to the 22nd Jewish Culture Festival to Cracow.

Each year early summer, Cracow’s Kazimierz Di-strict gathers artists, art connoisseurs and lovers of the tradition which had been for many centu-ries developed by the inhabitants of this District and of many others cities, towns and villages scat-tered across territories of the Republic of Poland. Inconceivable crime of the Holocaust perpetrated by the German Nazis seventy years ago was me-ant to wipe out Jews from the map of Poland and whole Europe. Thanks to you: Festival’s founders and organizers, thanks to Holocaust survivors and their descendants, and also thanks to people of other nationalities who are fascinated with the ample cultural heritage of the Jewish community, memory of Polish Jews continues to be alive, and their achievements in art and science find a cre-ative follow-up to this day.

Each time, the Program of the Krakow Festival abounds in interesting concerts, exhibitions, workshops, meetings and literary discussions. I have no doubt that the extensive offer of Festiva-l’s events will suit every taste. May the next ten wonderful days leave all of you: artists, partici-pants and visitors alike with many unforgettable impressions, may they further inspire you to explore the world of old shtetl’s where, as poet Antoni Słonimski put it: “the shoemaker was a poet, the watchmaker a philosopher, the barber a troubadour”

Janeck Altshuler arrived in Germany in 2001 as a Jew-ish emigrant from south-east Ukraine, in a time when dancing to Eastern European rhythms was not a fully established trend. But the crowd in Germany was receptive to Altshuler’s new sound from “the other side of the Iron Curtain”. Mix of Balkan tuba bass and Klezmer melodies from Ukraine fused with Latin music, swing and electro-swing have inspired devoted clubgoers of his crazy “La Bolschevita” parties. Let’s do some Yiddish swing!

Traveling around the world I often hear the question: “How many Jews are left in Poland?”

Not many, for sure, far too few...

But it’s more important to me whether people are good and wise, and at the same time beautiful inside.

I also often hear: “That world will never return.”

Surely not. But where should it return to? And why?

Far more important to me is where the survivors went,

where their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren went

and what kind of world they are making today, far away and here in Poland.

I see them every day, not so many, I admit, as once...

Yet they bear witness that death cannot conquer life.

Ever.

Blessed art Thou, Our Lord and King of the univer-se, Giver of all life.

The award of the Jewish Culture Festival in KrakowVoice of Joy and deliverance

The words of Psalm 118 are the motto, the messa-ge of the Award that we have given since 2009 to persons and institutions who support the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow. Thanks to their tangi-ble, material generosity and spiritual inspiration, “Voice of Joy and Deliverance resounds in the tents of the righteous” (Psalm 118: 15) at the Kra-kow Festival.

Our Award is an expression of respect and grati-tude to those who support us in the work of safe-guarding the memory and broadening familiarity with contemporary Jewish culture in Diaspora and Israel.

Our festival would not be what it is today without them. Previous recipients of the Award are Bog-dan Zdrojewski, Minister of Culture and National Heritage; Sigmunt Rolat, Honorary Chairman of the Friends of the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival Society; and Tad Taube, Chairman of Taube Philan-thropies and of the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life and Culture, Professor Jacek Majchrowski – Mayor of Krakow, Professor Władysław Barto-szewski, and Corinne Evens – cofounder and Presi-dent of Evens Foundation.

Although the majority of Jews support Zionism, there are two specifically Jewish strains of anti-Zionism. One is secular and leftist, questioning the need for a Jewish state. Even if it does not postulate the liquidation of the existing state, it has specific expectations of it. The second anti-Zionism is religious and has completely different expectations connected with the state of Israel, as proclaimed by tradition: the Messiah, rather than political means, should have brought it into existence. Although it would seem that the leftist and traditional religious views have nothing in common, certain parallels can be found in both their criticism and their suggestions. Moreover, both of these approaches point out real problems that Zionists, those sympathetic to Zionism, and post-Zionists must deal with.

Voice of Joy and deliverance (Ps. 118:15)

This year’s cycle of concerts in the Tempel Syna-gogue opens with an exceptional performance. In Psalm 145:4 it is written “Generation to generation will praise Your works, and they will recite Your mighty deeds.” Singing together for the first time in Krakow will be the younger generation of can-tors, the successors to the greats who have gone before. They are young, exceptionally talented, and have already won renown around the world: Can-tor Yaakov Lemmer, Cantor Chaim Shimon Miller, the son of the great Benzion, and Cantor Yaakov Rosenfeld. They are the guardians of centuries of the art of synagogue and Hassidic singing, engaged in its creative continuation. The three Cantors will be accompanied by the Kolot Min Hashamayim Choir of Israel under the direction of Rafael Bitton.

Haferflocken swingers (Germany)

The Haferflocken Swingers are known for cross-ing borders. This underground swing band from Berlin juggles musical categories deftly. Swinging rock and roll à la Louis Prima, the blues, calypso, and brass sounds can be heard in their music. From the very first days of the group, Talis Morta-lis and Jimmy Mohan, its founders, developed a highly original and authentic style of their own, with its roots to be found in primal jazz. The quest began with traditional New Orleans sounds inter-mingled with the funk climate of Berlin. Over time they began adding gypsy and Jewish sounds to their repertoire and to this day they continue to explore an incredibly inspiring Zornian vision of jazz. A swing circus on wheels. Thou shalt not make Graven imagesWHAT IS ALLOWED TO BE REPRESENTED IN JEWISH ART?

Jewish art developed in the shadow of the prohibi-tion in the second commandment against making “graven images” and, more broadly, against present-ing figures. But was this prohibition taken literally? It is contradicted by countless examples from mosaics and paintings in the ancient synagogues of Asia Minor to the interiors of wooden synagogues filled with painted and carved animals. On the other hand, there are many instances of avoiding figures, and especially the human face, which bore fruit in the form of a wealth of symbolic representations. We will see examples of “grappling with the second commandment”, before going on to create a graphic narrative that “avoids” the human figure.

The history of this instrument reaches back to the 10th century, and its construction and sound have inspired phi-losophers, painters, visionaries, and poets from the Middle Ages to the present. The Maćko Korba Ensemble, inspired by oral histories of the Baal Shem Tov where facts blend with fantastic narra-tives, takes a very personal and naïve, or down-right childlike, approach to Hassidic mysticism.

Taking part are outstanding musicians, intuition-ists, a sound engineer, and Cinemanual, who uses original visual technology based entirely on ana-log light. The project is an exclusive for the Jewish Culture Festival and will be heard only once, in the Tempel Synagogue.

Despite the biblical prohibition against making “graven images” of the creatures living on the

ground, in the waters, and in the air, Jewish ceremonial art teems with animals and birds. Their sources are biblical texts, midrashes, and folk tradition. The painted and carved decora-tions of wooden synagogues were a true paradise for animals, but we also find them in silhouettes and on gravestones, Hannukah lamps, and Torah crowns. The participants, inspired by the examples of animal motifs and asso ciated allusions presented, will have a chance to create their own compositions, using details from reproductions, decorative paper, and so on.

Almost 70 thousand Jews lived in Krakow before the war – a quarter of the city’s population. The gates of the Krakow ghetto, erected by the Germans, were gates leading to mass murder. Each year on the anniversary of the liquida-

tion of the ghetto, we set out on the March of Remembrance; during the Festival, which com-memorates death while celebrating life, we re-visit those places from which there was once no return: plac Zgody, now plac Bohaterów Getta. In reflection, in prayer, and in song, we pay tribute to all our murdered Jewish brothers and sisters. Blessed is their memory!

Ben Zion David, an eighth-generation Yemenite Israeli silversmith, presents the magical art of Yemenite filigree. In every master class, the artist exhibits the creation of a jewel of five different types of filigree threads – strands of fine sterling silver twisted and shaped into unique designs.

Inspired by traditional bridal jewellery, the reinvented ethnic patterns of the past are trans-formed into contemporary works of art. Each handmade craft symbolizes a precious heritage, the heart and soul of the artist, and brings out an air of mystery that exists in us all. In addition to five other items, Ben Zion David will be creating one particularly special piece – a single bracelet which will be created incrementally over the course of the week. On the last day of the work-shop, there will be a special lottery and one lucky person will win the bracelet. All participants in the workshop are eligible to win!

Cuisine is an important element in every nation’s culture. By sampling foods and listening to stories about eating we learn more about the people we sit down together with at the table than by reading volumes of books. This is not a matter of scholarly knowledge, but rather the authentic ex-perience that touches the soul and the memories of generations, something that cannot be put into words. This is especially so in the case of Jewish food. The flavours and the aromas transport us into a world thousands of years old.

We are invited to join in preparing the delicacies of Jewish cuisine by Malka Kafka (owner of the Tel-Aviv kosher restaurant in Warsaw and the DeliCafé chain of local vegetarian outlets, host of the Kosher Macher program on TV Kuchnia+, the author of Jewish Delicacies) and Ben Zion David (the Israeli artist who stems from a Yemenite fam-ily and is well known to Festival audience for his Yemenite jewellery workshops) together with Tal Arshi from the Yemenite Culture Museum in Jaffa.

Not for the first time, we venture outside the boundaries of Kazimierz in an attempt to imagine prewar Krakow and see it through the prism of a quarter of its inhabitants – the Jews of Krakow. This time, they are the assimilated Jews who had their shops, schools, prayer houses, and newspa-pers, who had their own flourishing life before the war, and who disappeared not only from our city, but also from our memories. We revisit this forgotten life during the “Jewish Krakow” walk.

For the first time in our Festival tours we would like to show you, in order to gain a fuller image of the religious life of the prewar Krakow Jews, not only the synagogues but also the prayer houses. There were more than 120 Jewish places of wor-ship in Krakow, the great majority in Kazimierz. We think first of all of the synagogues, but in fact there were smaller or larger prayer houses on almost every corner. Agnieszka Legutko, author of a guide to Kazimi-erz, and licensed guide and Krakow native Anna Kiesell will endeavor to show you this history.

We associate the formerly Jewish part of Kazimierz with religious life, with the Orthodox residents strolling the narrow streets on the Shabbat, and with pilgrimages to the Remuh Cemetery. Thoughts of Podgórze, on the other hand, evoke images of the ghetto, deportation, and death. In fact, secular life flourished in both Kazimierz and Podgórze from the nineteenth century on. There were markets, there was Jewish theatre, and Podgórze was a prosperous, tolerant city where only many years later would a tragedy be played out.

The Remuh Cemetery is the oldest extant Jew-ish necropolis in Krakow, and one of the oldest

in Galicia and all Europe. The walk through this small but fascinating cemetery will be a journey through the history of the Krakow Jewish com-munity from the mid-16th to the end of the 18th century. In today’s necropolis there are about 700 gravestones that are beautiful examples of sepul-chral art covering the important names and often the extraordinary histories of the Jews who lived in Krakow for hundreds of years, who created and loved here. We invite you to the Remuh cemetery to see why Jews from all over the world make pilgrimages to this place.

Everyone – both children and grownups – is in-vited. We hope we can encourage you to learn in depth about the work of Janusz Korczak and to analyze his pedagogical methods, which are wor-thy of being used in education today.

Gad Baruch Hinkis – Dirty Honkers (Israel / Germany)

Gad Baruch Hinkis, a prominent musician in the Israeli hip-hop scene and based in Berlin since 2009, works as a producer and singer for the bands Dirty Honkers and Jewdyssee. With both projects he has been mixing traditional elements

with electronic sounds and hard hitting dance floor grooves, shaking up clubs around Europe. Developing a unique approach to music creation with a self-made midi controller, he explores transcultural musical communication, incorporat-ing African rhythms into the digitized beats of European night life.

Gad will present an interpretation of the story of Abraham and will try to paint the Jewish nation as a tribal culture. He will talk about the importance of music in tribalism, as well as perform examples with his midi controller. During workshops, own percussion instruments are encouraged, but not mandatory.

Jewish paper-cutting is a folk art that reached its apex in the 19th century before fading away at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the sec-ond half of the 20th century, it was reborn in two centers, Israel and the USA. Jewish paper-cutting workshops have been a constant feature of the Krakow Festival since 1994. In these workshops you can learn about the history of the silhouettes, their varieties and symbolism, and above all the techniques for cutting them. Each participant can design and cut his or her own work. We issue an invitation to everyone interested in learning the secrets of this unique art.

Strolling through the New Cemetery we are surprised how many names are familiar to us and how much they mean to Krakow. After stopping at the ghetto museum “Apteka pod Orłem” to learn about the wartime history of Krakow’s Jews, we set off on a walk around the ghetto, pausing at the two extant fragments of the ghetto walls. This is a very special journey through time, in a place that witnessed the twilight of a significant Jewish community with centuries of tradition, and a way of paying homage to the Jews of Krakow.

Rabbis known throughout the world once lived and taught in Krakow – Moses Isserles known as “the Remuh”, Nathan Nata Spira known as “the Megale Amukot”, Joel Sirkes known as “the Bach”, and many, many others. They were the pride and the light of our city. Their learning and wisdom brought Krakow fame as the “Polish Jerusalem”. They left behind their work, places associated with them, stories, and their memory. We shall walk in their footsteps.

MuSiCO muLakuŻ

MuLaKuŻ (Polish abbreviation for Musical Laboratory of Jew-ish Culture) is a music project implemented by the Jewish Culture Festival Society at the Festival’s official coffeehouse, the Cheder Café. The laboratory presents new Jewish music as the living organic tissue reacting to contemporary trends and music genres, vivid and fertile, rather than be-ing a klezmer museum piece. MuLaKuŻ is an inter-section point for those artists on the fringes whose activity in essence revolves around the crossing of boundaries. The fresh new perspective on Jewish music pre-sented by the artists participating in the MuLaKuŻ project is a combination of profound knowledge of the tradition and classical canons and simul-taneous creative inspiration, at times marked by heresy. In 2011 MuLaKuŻ CD New Jewish Music out of Poland was released, a selection of nine musical pieces recorded during concerts in Cheder Café between 2009 and 2011. You will get this CD for free along with your tickets to MuLaKuŻ concerts.

After years of the nighttime Jazz Klez Session, the time for a change has come. The 22nd Jewish Cul-

ture Festival is launching a new formula: MIDNITE SESSION, during which different groups, includ-ing some formed exclusively for the Festival, will appear each night on the Alchemia stage. Every night will see not only a different group but also a different style, from swing and 60s surfer music blended with nigunim through jazz performed by great musicians from New York. After each of these concerts there will be an ALCHEMIA JAM – a wild jam session in the best tradition of Festi-val nights at the Alchemia, during which we will invite all the musicians to improvise together.

The Hebrew word for “revelation,” hitgalut, has as its root galut – “dispersal” and “exile.” This is the price of revelation: God “exiled Israel among the nations for the purpose of gaining converts” (Pesachim 87b). We will talk about five films with today’s Israel as their subject. In Israel, the sense of Diaspora persists in a society that is no longer “dispersed” and the sense of revelation in a society that is no longer “religious”.

“In every Torah story,” said the Maggid of Kozienice, Israel ben Sabbatai Hofstein, “an eter-nal lesson is contained.” We shall concentrate on one such lesson, derived from the life of Abraham, when God tells Abraham: “Lech Lecha,” or “Go forth” (Genesis 12:1). The settled, established, and affluent Abraham, together with his family, goes forth to the Promised Land, but in fact into the unknown – he knows neither the direction nor the destination of his journey. Whenever we must make an important decision in our lives, we are basically in the same situation as Abraham. We shall try to see ourselves and our life experi-ence from this perspective, making use of Biblical texts and later commentaries as hints toward solutions. We will try to answer certain questions. What is the Promised Land of my dreams? What are my private Promised Lands – love, financial success, health, creative renown? What hinders me on the road to them? What supports me and helps me move forward? We will study according to the Jewish tradition, in chevrut, several per-sons together, and then share with everyone the things that are important to each of us.

We first experienced Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow 20 years ago.

We came, we saw, we enjoyed and we were convinced that the Festival is a great opportunity for all people to learn, enjoy and celebrate Jewish culture in its many great historical, national and modern developments.

We kept returning every year and have developed into our current organization committed to participate in the Festival and support the goals of the festival and its leadership under the direction of Janusz Makuch.

Thanks to the heartfelt gifts of many righteous persons Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow connects us to our roots, presents, educates and celebrates richness of Jewish life in Israel and Diaspora and makes Jewish heart of Krakow beat continuously again.

We thank all Friends who have supported this year-round effort and commitment of Janusz Makuch and his team and we invite all those who would like to experience the many facets of Jewish culture during the annual Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow and throughout the year.
