Choice of Genre

The genre that I have chosen for my music magazine is “POP”. Pop music (a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of "popular") is a genre of popular music which originated in its modern form in the 1950s, deriving from rock and roll. The terms "popular music" and "pop music" are often used interchangeably, even though the former is a description of music which is popular (and can include any style).

As a genre, pop music is very eclectic, often borrowing elements from other style including urban, dance, rock, Latin and country. nonetheless, there are core elements which define pop. Such include generally short-to-medium length songs, written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), as well as the common employment of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and catchy hooks.

Thus "pop music" may be used to describe a distinct genre, aimed at a youth market, often characterized as a softer alternative to rock and roll. And so the target audiences for my music magazine are teenagers and young adults.

Target Audiences

The target audiences for my music magazine, as mentioned before, are teenagers and young adults firstly because of the selection of the genre. Secondly because of the content of the magazine. Lets see each component one by one.

How does the Cover Page of my Music Magazine represent my Target Audience ?

Starting off with the main image of the cover page of my music magazine, the models and their “style” seems more appealing to a younger audience. Given the changing fashion trends of today, the black leather jacket, the bands, the sunglasses, the posture of the models (hands in pocket) and their clothing is reaching out to a larger number of younger audience rather than grown ups.

Secondly, the color scheme of the magazine cover page i.e. black, white, yellow and red is representing a social group that is neither for professional grown ups, nor is it too childish and hence, young adults.

The content of the music magazine cover page such as the name of the band “TrebleMakers” and additional offers offering “an autographed guitar” is a kind of content that reaches a younger but not too younger audience and hence helps to identify the audience for my magazine.

The price of my magazine is in the reach of an ordinary person, I have kept it in a reasonable price limit to attract a larger “price conscious” audience, but another reason is that my target audience is willing to pay within his limit of price.

How does the Contents Page of my Music Magazine represent my Target Audience ?

Starting off with the color scheme of the contents page, again these colors i.e. red, yellow, black and white are more appealing to a younger generation.

Secondly the content is all about the latest music, parties and interview with the young band (that too falls into the same age category as that of my target audience) and so the content attracts teenager and young adults. Similarly the slogan at the bottom of the page “for music lovers that speak their minds” is really motivational and attractive for a younger audience.

Thirdly the images, the main image and the subsidiary images, are again of the people that fall under the same age category as my target audience and an image that shows multiple musical instruments has the instruments that are appealing to younger audience like the guitar, the drums etc. plus the gestures and postures of the models is somewhat casual which also shortens the list of admirers of the magazine to a younger audience.

How does the Double Page Spread of my Music Magazine represent my Target Audience ?

Starting of with the image of my double spread page, the models and their get up is representing a particular social group that not only likes pop music but is somewhat a admirer of the color black. This along with the fact that the models fall under the same age category as the target audience for my magazine it is easier to reach out to them.

Secondly the color scheme of my music magazines double page spread i.e. red, yellow, black and white is appealing to a younger audience.

Thirdly the content again is attracting teenagers and young adults that are fans of the band and want t o know more about them.
