* The BA Music major requires a complement: Philosophy/Theology minor (20 credits; 12 upper division; one must be an ethics course) or four semesters of foreign language. The PHI/THE option is displayed in this curriculum plan.

* Applied Music-Piano may substitute for Class Piano. For transfer, four semesters of applied piano may substitute for Class Piano I-IV. The curriculum guide lists the minimum requirements for the completion of the degree. Most music majors are active in more than one ensemble, and often in more than one applied music area. These credits are in addition to the courses listed. A minimum of 44 credits must be at the

300-400 level.

+Due to the transfer limit, the credits for some courses, applied music and ensembles will not count as transfer courses for the BS degree.

*Lessons must be taken in voice and primary instrument. A total of seven semesters of applied study in a single area is required starting with MUSC 146 (vocal or instrumental). If voice is the secondary area (MUSC 145), Class Voice may substitute for Applied Music-Voice. Four semesters of Applied Piano may substitute for Class Piano I-IV.

• Theology electives may be taken in Summer Session(s).

Notes for All Incoming Transfer Students:

* The maximum number of credits that will transfer from BSC to U-Mary is 64.

+ Please note: the additional courses required for the completion of an Associate’s Degree at Bismarck State College are not listed here – please see your advisor for more information.

Notes for All Music Programs:

Department Proficiency Assessments

All incoming U-Mary music students take assessment exams in the areas of music theory, music history, aural skills, and piano proficiency. Based on these scores, students are placed in classes to ensure their academic success. Deficiencies in required music courses may result in students retaking those courses, and a course of study longer than two years may be necessary. Study guides or descriptions of proficiency levels are available upon request.

Grades

Academic music classes (e.g. theory, aural skills, methods, conducting) require a grade of C or higher; applied music (private lessons or class) and ensembles require a grade of B- or higher. This applies to any class that is a required part of a major curriculum.

Scholarships

Music scholarships for 2x2 transfer students are guaranteed for two years as long as students maintain the eligibility requirements in the scholarship agreement. Scholarship amounts are based on auditions.

Acceptance into the Department

Students must apply to a specific degree program and be accepted by the University of Mary Music Department. The application includes recommendations from BSC and U-Mary music faculty, completion of the appropriate piano proficiency requirements, statements regarding music and career goals, and an audition in the primary performance

area. Graduates of Bismarck State College may choose one of the following two options to apply to the U-Mary Music Department:

1. Complete the audition for U-Mary faculty and the department admission paperwork during the final semester at BSC. Successful completion results in admission to the department prior to the first semester at U-Mary. A degree audit and successful completion of the assessment exams will ensure transfer into the program as a junior, and completion of the degree in two years.

2. Complete the audition during the first fall semester at U-Mary, and paperwork by the following January 15th. Students are conditionally accepted during the first semester at U-Mary, but there is no guarantee for admission to the department or for completion within four semesters prior to formal admission to the department.
