Alarming Trend in the 1990s
• the number of ships in German ownership was reduced from some 1.700 in the end of 1980s to around 1.500 in 1996• the number of seafarers in the German fleet reduced from 19.591 in 1993 to 10.465 in 2003 accordingly• a number of shipping companies took into consideration to remove their offices from Germany to other countries
