Listen, Lord, and answer me. Save your servant who trusts in you. I call to you all day long, have mercy on me, O Lord. - Psalm 85:1-3

Reflection on Today’s Readings:

St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California 21st Sunday in ordinary time August 21st, 2011

^ Ì The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita at 310-216-2001, or call the Rectory Office at 310-670-2243, x42.

FOCUS: Like Peter, we are to be open to God’s grace working in us - Jesus knew that Peter had the ability and the openness to God’s grace that would enable him to be a powerful witness. Recognizing this, Jesus placed Peter as the rock on which He would build His Church. Like Peter, we each have a calling. We are to listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and be prepared to step out in faith to fulfill it. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The Lord announces that He is giving Eliakim authority over the house of David. He says He will place the keys of authority on Eliakim’s shoulder. In the second reading, we are reminded of the depth of God’s wisdom—too much for us to comprehend. In the Gospel, Jesus entrusts Peter with the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill,

and those in need of our prayers … Please let us know about the condition of those we’re praying for. We’ll keep/remove their name(s) as requested, after the first few weeks.

ËTo receive Holy Communion (for those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound) please call Gloria Bowen, 310.670.5971, Eucharistic Minister to the Sick. To have the name(s) included in our prayers, call the Parish Office at 310-670-2243.

_ Please pray for those who have died, especially Linda M. Lang-Curran and Karen Allan, that they may rest in peace.

FACT OF LIFE Every Child Should Grow Up in a Family Each and every child, for the full and harmonious development of his or her personality, should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere

of happiness, love and understanding (cf., Convention on the Rights of the Child, Preamble). It is precisely this environment which will promote good and responsible citizenship that is essential to the common good of humanity. The family is where young people first learn moral responsibility and respect for others. The family has an important role to play in educating children to develop all their faculties and in training them to acquire ethical and spiritual values and to be deeply attached to peace, liberty and the dignity and equality of all men and women. The family, founded on the marriage between one man and one woman, is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and must be guaranteed protection by society and the State (cf., Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Art. 16,3; International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Art. 23,1). Archbishop Francis Chullikatt, the permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations. July 28, 2011 Prayer for Life: We praise you, Father, that you sent your Son to reveal to the world that all people are His brothers and sisters, that all people are your children. Through Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.

“Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;

And whatever you loose on earth should be loosed in heaven.”

- Matthew 16:19

18th Sunday of Ordinary Time - In today’s reading, St. Paul reminds the Romans — and us — that all things come from God: “For from Him and through Him and for Him all

things are.” Good stewards understand that all is gift and share generously the gifts of time, talent, and treasure with which they’ve been blessed. See Romans 11:36

St. A’s Bible Study - We are currently on break for the summer. We will resume our study of the Gospel of Matthew on Sept. 6th. If you would like to join us in the fall, please call Susan Senia at 310.822.6511 or e-mail at [email protected].

Teach Kids to Protect Themselves at Home - We consider our homes to be safe places for our children. But being home alone, especially during

the summer months, can pose risks for children. Here are a few tips to teach kids that will help keep them safe when you are not with them at home: Never answer the door if alone. Do not invite anyone in the house without the permission of a parent or babysitter. Don’t tell anyone on the phone that your parents are not home. Instead tell them that your parents can’t come to the phone, and take a message. For more tips, please visit www.kidsafe.com. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

SRE FIRST EUCHARIST FAMILIES — PLEASE PICK UP YOUR DVD AND YOUR BANNERS IN THE RECTORY!

RCIA – Are You Interested In Becoming Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is our greatest joy, as well as our Mission as a Catholic community, to welcome new members. The RCIA is a process of formation and education for those interested in learning about and experiencing the Catholic faith. The process is designed for those baptized in other Christian traditions, baptized Catholics who never received the Sacrament of Eucharist, some who have been away from our faith, or anyone interested in our Catholic faith. It is a faith journey that encourages individuals to broaden and deepen their prayer life, to know God through the Scriptures, to come to know themselves more and to participate more in the parish life. For questions or info, please call Jonette Mauch at 310-670-2243.

Welcoming the New Roman Missal, Third Edition

“Words of the Week” - Some of the words used in the new translation of the Mass may be unfamiliar to some Catholics. Each week we will provide the definitions of some key words which may help to increase your understanding of the rich theology that underlies these texts. Definitions are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition. Consubstantial: The belief, articulated in the Nicene Creed, about the relationship of the Father and the Son: that “in the Father and with the Father, the Son is one and the same God.” (CCC, no. 262). Contrite: To be repentant within one’s heart and mind for sins committed and to resolve not to sin again. (...will continue in the following weeks…)

St. Anastasia Social Events Group - Parishioners, and family and friends of parishioners, the Social Events committee has put together another year of exciting and fun-filled excursions to please, entertain and even educate! To kick-off the new 2011-2012 season, come to the September 14th meeting at Noon and hear an informative presentation by Anthony Ramos, LAPD office, regarding crime in the area, the difference between an emergency and “non-emergency” and what to do, how to contact the police and much more. Importantly too, you can sign-up early for the upcoming events… Remember early payment assures best seating on the bus. Want a hint? How about Christmas on the Queen Mary! Bring your lunch to the meeting—we will provide the drinks and dessert.

From the Music Director… "Behold, I make all things new." For prayer and reflection, here is the new text of the Nicene

Creed with the changes in bold: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. And one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. (Next: Why has "one in being with the Father" been changed to "consubstantial with the Father?) - Greg Koppenhaver

The Mission Co-op Collection takes place this weekend, August 20/21 - Fr. Ildelfonce Mapara, a Benedictine monk of St. Maurus Hanga Abbey in Tanzania is our guest speaker. His Benedictine religious community in southern Tanzania is serving people to have access to clean water. This is an acute problem; many children there die because of using water from contaminated sources—rivers and hand dug wells. Abdominal problems due to unsafe drinking water is the second leading cause of infant mortality in southern Tanzania after malaria. Our need is to have/buy pipes to tap clean water from the mountains. Envelopes are in the pews for your convenience. Thank you all in advance for your generosity.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time FAITH FORMATION and more … august 21st, 2011

Living Faith for Kids… ””I will give thanks, to you, O Lord… When I called, you answered me; you built up strength within me.” Psalm 138:1,3 “Thank You” is so easy to say, but often we just forget to say it. We take our families and friends for granted. Beautiful sunsets come and go without a word of thanks to God. Focused on what we are without, we forget all that we have. We all need to be reminded from time to time to say thank you, especially to God. That is one reason for attending Mass each Sunday. You probably know that Eucharist means “thanksgiving.” Let us pray that our weekly Eucharist will lead to thanksgiving all week long. Lord, thank you for all your good gifts.
