21st INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016

COMPETITION THEME :

REFRESH SPACE IN VINEYARD Wine Centre for Adventure and Open-air Museum in Vineyards of Svätý Jur

Motto:

”Wine and architecture have a lot in common in sense perception of their characteristics, providing experiences and creating feelings and favourable climate. They are part of cultural heritage”

(Ján M. Bahna, architekt)

INTRODUCTORY IDEAS AND INSPIRATION

Drama, controversy and bipolarity of the terms of reference are a challenge Regular and net rows of grapevine vs. hardly accessible, rocky plot of broken topography in a hollow

Historical vs. modern methods of viticulture Interior vs. exterior exhibition

Modern exhibition in form of multimedia performance vs. traditional forms of exhibition in the vineyard watchman´s hut and open-air museum

Modern constructions vs. archetypal vineyard watchman´s hut Terraced vs. pavilion layout of buildings

Vertical dominating features – view-points vs. horizontality of landscape architecture of the buildings Merge of the buildings with the landscape vs. exhibitionism in the landscape

Utility architecture vs. architecture of symbols

Transformation of the life-cycle of a bunch of grapes and experiences into architecture has different forms.

Tradition, history and local habits of viticulture transformed into modern landscape architecture. Wine and architecture are connected by “terroire“.

The term of “terroire” means unique geographic character of the product (namely wine, coffee, tea, tobacco, chocolate, corn or tomatoes): unique character of wine from one region or vineyard,

resulting from unique combination of geological and climate conditions, or human activities. The set of all environmental factors affecting qualities of the crop grown in specific habitat

Let architecture, similarly to grapevine, “grow” strongly affected by the general character of the locality and surrounding environment, let the form and layout of the architecture be influenced by

the landscape typology in which it is embodied, by orientation, direction of wind, kind of soil, energy of the sun.

Without human contribution – of an architect or vine-grower and wine maker - wine could not originate: they complement natural components of the terroire and put their unmistakable character

into it.

Wine and experiences _Experience of stay or work on the vineyard flooded with sun, its strong positive energy stemming

from those incredibly vital plants called grapevine, withstanding wind and rain, often dependent on water from the very depth of the Earth, taking energy from the sun to concentrate it in their sweet

grapes. _Experience from discovery of Svätý Jur´s history and tradition of viticulture

_Experience from discovery and comparison of traditional and modern wine making and wine storage by being involved in the process

_Experience from discovery of taste and smell of tasted wine complemented with savour of food.

A. COMPETITION TERMS OF REFERENCE

Objective The task of the competition terms of reference is to design so called wine-lovers´ destination typical of its exceptionality, special character and informality which are added value for the visitor, attracting the whole family, in other words: to revive interest in viticulture of Svätý Jur, sustain tourism in form of agro-tourism or currently popular oeno-tourism, in particular. Tradition of viticulture can be newly interpreted by contemporary architecture which should be inspired by traditional technology and forms; it can, however, revive conventional typology, and experiment with new relation between grapevine cultivation and surrounding landscape of vineyards. Reasoning The description of the competition task has to start with ideas inspired by documents of Svätý Jur Viticulture Association involved in activities related to the project “Open-air museum of viticulture” that is part of the terms of reference (ToR). Educational trail together with the open-air museum of viticulture will serve for presentation of vine-growing and wine making tradition. Research of the Slovak Academy of Science (2009-2011) documented the existence of unique historical structures of vineyards that had no analogy in Malé Karpaty region. These are preserved medieval landscape structures, such as extensively tended pole and wire vineyards, orchards and chestnut plantations mainly in hilly landscape, a small-scale mosaic of plots with more or less preserved runes, dry walls, terraces, catch-water structures, original wells, sheds and vineyard watcher´s huts. Namely these features are the reason for construction of the open-air museum of viticulture in open landscape, but also the experience centre of vine-growing disseminating awareness of grapevine and viticulture that even during bad weather will become the resort of education and entertainment offering a possibility of active spending of leisure time.

B. THE SITE

Locality and area Community lands of Svätý Jur are part of Malé Karpaty vine-growing region and they are characteristic by steep slopes with small terraced vineyards situated on sun-heated southern, south-eastern and south-western slopes of Malé Karpaty. Thanks to their tradition of vine growing and wine making it is called Tuscany of Malé Karpaty. The plot in question situated at Panciere on Bratislava´s crofts is accessible on foot, by car or bicycle from Svätý Jur centre along Letohradská Street or from Bratislava´s crofts. It is also accessible from Svätý Jur educational trail on foot or by bicycle. The site is sloping, rocky, with detectable terraces and uneven terrain of former vineyard. The location on the hill summit is strategic also from views of the surrounding countryside point of view. The plots Sloping plots with hollows and scours, bushes and stones difficult to access are a challenge. The plot that is not of permanent use for growing grapevine can provide space for unconventional architecture. The plot that was probably never used as a vineyard will serve for viticulture presentation and to general public. Our ancestors cultivated these stony baulks by picking out stones and building terraces with runes and walls. Where grapevine could not be planted they placed buildings – sheds or vineyard watchman´s huts from which watchmen could safeguard the vineyard against thieves and pests.

Page 8: 21st INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION …...- architectural and space solution, general layout and functional scheme of designed buildings - comprehensibility and force of graphic

Plot A _destined for the open-air museum of viticulture is part of the property of the Town of Svätý Jur, _plot No.2815, currently in lease of Svätý Jur Viticulture Association Plot B _ destined for the experience centre of vine growing and wine making

_ difficult to access plot with broken topography, unsuitable for a vineyard, situated in a hollow, covered with bushes and trees of natural seeding that can be cleared,

_ plot No.2793, 2799/1-2, 2800, 2804/1, 2806, 2808, 2816. Plot C _extended possibility to place the experience centre and open-air public space _plot No.2803/2-9.

C. COMPETITION TASK

The refresh space in vineyard will consist of exterior exhibition – open-air museum of viticulture and interior exhibition – wine experience centre Exterior exhibition will consist of scenic setting of the open-air museum of viticulture with various possibilities of use: it will introduce the tradition of viticulture in an attractive way to all age categories. The topography of the site enables to design a lookout platform with views of the surrounding landscape. Interior exhibition will be situated into a building or a set of designed buildings of the experience centre, which will offer the visitors of all age groups experiences of grapevine growing and wine making in form of traditional or multimedia exhibition and presentation, wine tasting or other social interaction together with beautiful view of the landscape of vineyards in any season of the year. The buildings´ architecture can combine tradition with innovation the way good wine complements well chosen food. The only existing building is the traditional vineyard watchman´s hut that can be somehow incorporated in the design.

D. CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME – SPACE AND LAYOUT OPTIONS OF THE DESIGN

The terms of reference are divided into two tasks - binding parts of each competition design: 1. The area of the open-air museum of viticulture _ plot No. 2815_ exterior exhibition _ with various possibilities of use: _landscape exhibition of grapevine cultivation in a model vineyard (presentation of original ways of grapevine growing and vineyard cultivation, growing of traditional species of grapevine typical of Svätý Jur), _orchard _ examples of traditional species of fruit trees connected with vineyard (vineyard peach, medlar, quince, nut or almond), _stone runes and walls supporting terrace shaped terrain. _relaxation zone for visitors of all age groups with a shelter for get-togethers and seasonable events, wine tasting or activities of the viticulture association, fire place, _ traditional vineyard watchman´s hut – with possibility to furnish it with traditional interior of the watchman´s hut, or another exhibition; it can also be used as permanently open shelter for cyclists, tourists, visitors, and the like, _lookout platform over the open-air museum with view of the surroundings 2. Buildings of the wine experience centre Interior exhibition of the centre of wine and experiences can consist of one multifunction building with one joint entrance, or of one building with more entrances and different functions, or of more buildings – pavilions with independent entrances with following possible use:

Page 9: 21st INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION …...- architectural and space solution, general layout and functional scheme of designed buildings - comprehensibility and force of graphic

_exhibition space for multimedia or traditional exhibition focused on history and development of vine growing and wine making (historical and modern ways of planting vineyard, demonstration of grapevine species, vineyard tending, demonstrations of work in the vineyard, way of picking of grapes, etc.) _space for demonstration of wine making and storage: picking of the grapes, de-stemming, pressing, fermentation, wine “fining”, filtration, aging in barrels – arbitrary form of presentation or performance, or direct involvement of the visitor into mini-scale production with a possibility to be placed underground, the layout of exhibition spaces can copy the spaces for wine making and storage _archive and wine salon of Svätý Jur wines, _multifunction space for exhibitions (art and wine), presentations, picture shows, concerts, seminars, _space for wine testing and refreshment – combination of food and wine, visual contact with the vineyard and exhibition space, storage and preparation of simple refreshment from home production, _multifunction space for experience programmes for various age groups, _entrance hall with information desk, cloak room and rest rooms for visitors, _wine shop, bookshop selling books with wine topics, souvenirs, _ utilities The scope of use is definitely not limited to the above-mentioned options. The competition designs can contain further, not mentioned, use relating to the competition theme.

E. RESTRICTIONS, LIMITS AND REGULATIONS

On the plots of the open-air museum of viticulture besides public space landscaping only small-scale constructions of recreational character in the vineyard may be designed. The building of the centre of wine and experiences will be situated in rather broken topography with difficult access that is not suitable for planting a vineyard. Dimensional solution of the buildings, relation to the landscape Dimensional solution of the buildings should respect natural character of the vine-growing landscape and its morphology and prefer principles of landscape architecture using terrain unevenness, with optimum one underground and one above-ground floor in terrace layout, except for the lookout platform which can create a dominating feature in the landscape. There is a number of options of the exhibition building´s design consisting of more solitary exhibition units dispersed in the landscape, or one compact building meandering through the landscape, ascending and descending above and below the level of broken terrain, a building “submerged into the landscape” – cut into the hill or levitating above the adjacent terrain with the aim at disturbing the landscape morphology as little as possible – i.e. the architecture should be derived from the topography of the site. Architecture of the buildings Bipolarity and dramatic features of the ToR can reflect in the architecture of the buildings. Archetypal constructions of local architecture of vineyards (traditional vineyard hut with a cellar) can be transformed into a modern stone-glass building with inspiring view of the landscape. Dominating features _Existing vineyard hut as an archetypal landscape dominating feature (originally there was a hut of the watchman who safeguarded the vineyards during vintage season against thieves and pests) _Designed outlook point (can breach the limit of one above-ground floor), which as a walkway leads above the vineyards

Page 10: 21st INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION …...- architectural and space solution, general layout and functional scheme of designed buildings - comprehensibility and force of graphic

E. TRAFFIC AND COMMUNICATION SOLUTION

The site is situated in locality Panciere on Bratislava´s crofts and it is accessible: _ along Letohradská or Bratislava´s crofts Street on foot, by car or bicycle from the centre of Svätý Jur; _from Svätý Jur educational trail on foot or by bicycle. Preferred access is on foot or by bicycle. The design does not prefer access by cars, since there will not be parking possibilities except for several emergency parking places for short-term parking of handicapped visitors or supply, and except for necessity of emergency and rescue teams intervention. _Supply and waste transport shall be designed along Bratislava´s crofts Street.

F. CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL SOLUTION

Construction and material solution is not restricted in any way and it is in competency of the designer based on responsible professional assessment resulting from the concept and purpose of the building. Application of assortment of construction materials Xella - Ytong, Silka, Fermacell and/or Multipor is desirable. Material concept of the buildings and small-scale architecture in the open-air museum or the terraces can be developed in sense of symbiosis of the traditional and the contemporary, and underline the local colour of the traditional materials of the vineyards, such as wood, stone, clay as well as contemporary ones, such as steel, monolithic concrete and glass that may be used in form of large “windows to vineyards” – southward oriented glazing facilitating maximum effect of passive heat gains. The window to vineyards can represent a strong design as well as expressive instrument of the architecture.

G. ECOLOGY, SUSTAINABILITY AND UNIVERSAL DESIGN

Ecology and sustainability Advanced architectural solutions offer a possibility to apply intelligent technologies and innovative materials, alternative ways of power generation and its efficient and effective use in line with principles of ecology and sustainable development in construction engineering. Universal design The experience centre as well as open-air museum have to be barrier-free and opened to the

handicapped as well as seniors or families with children in prams.

H. ENERGY PERFORMANCE SOLUTION

Energy performance design In the design, increased attention should e paid to energy efficiency of the construction as well as the whole facility operation. It should be efficient as to energy management, intelligent, effective in its layout, orientation towards cardinal points, material and structural design and technologies and cost-effective during construction and operation. Energy performance design of the building partly submerged under the broken terrain level can consist in specification of the building´s compactness rate, taking advantage of optimum orientation toward cardinal points, ideal design of glazed surfaces on facades, using innovative technologies in

Page 11: 21st INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION …...- architectural and space solution, general layout and functional scheme of designed buildings - comprehensibility and force of graphic

facades design, solar gains, type of shading, ventilation, way of heating, application of renewable and

non-traditional materials, etc. Large part of the construction will be situated underground and together with green roof can contribute to heat losses reduction. Energy self-sufficiency In the past, each rural farm used to be energy self-sufficient. Its inhabitants provided not only for energy, but also for support. It is necessary to put efforts in partial energy self-sufficiency in the design of the experience centre building. It could be a real self-sufficient house – it means the house not connected to electricity network and/or gas pipeline or heat distribution network, which becomes necessary when a construction is located far from populated areas. There is no technical infrastructure built directly to the site, not even electricity connection. Therefore, the building or the set of designed buildings should as priority use their own alternative sources of heat as well as electricity (bio-fuels, recuperation, solar system, photovoltaic system, heat gains from glazed walls) and other alternative technologies. Water management of the building shall include own well, ecological waste water treatment plant (e.g. root treatment plant) or efficient utilization of rain water.
