Workshop Focus The pace of change in the world is accelerating, and teachers and administrators must lead the charge. At 21st Century Skills Workshop, attendees learn teacher-friendly strategies to use problem-based learning, clear communication, and metacognitive reflection to inspire and engage students.

With learning being relegated to the quantifiable, only easily scored and identified accomplishments are recognized. Classrooms must be reimagined as places where students connect and collaborate to do work that matters. Critical, Creative, and Collaborative Inquiry for the 21st Century

For schools to remain relevant in an information age, the focus for learning must shift from acquiring knowledge to using knowledge to solve meaningful problems. Workshop Profiles 

William M. Ferriter 

William M. Ferriter is a sixth-grade teacher in a professional learning community near Raleigh, North Carolina. A National Board Certified Teacher, William has designed professional development courses for educators nationwide. His trainings include how to use blogs, wikis, and podcasts in the classroom; the role of iTunes in teaching and learning; and the power of digital moviemaking. William has also developed schoolwide technology rubrics and surveys that identify student and staff digital proficiency at the building level. He is a founding member and senior fellow of the Teacher Leaders Network and has served as teacher in residence at the Center for Teaching Quality. An advocate for PLCs, improved teacher working conditions, and teacher leadership, William has represented educators on Capitol Hill. He has received the rare honor of being twice-certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, earning his first certification among the first 100 teachers in North Carolina and the first 1,000 in the United States. William has been a Regional Teacher of the Year in North Carolina, and his blog, The Tempered Radical, earned Best Teacher Blog of 2008 from Edublogs.

Garfield Gini‐Newman 

Garfield Gini-Newman is a senior lecturer at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. With a deep understanding of effective curriculum design and a focus on critical thinking, he has worked with numerous schools to develop learning frameworks that combine stimulating activities with authentic assessments. His interest in learning in the digital age has led to major

projects that explore the use of technology to support critical and collaborative thinking. Five years as a curriculum consultant for the York Region District School Board and 15 years of teaching experience have prepared him well for working with teachers in a manner that is engaging and practical. Garfield has spoken across Canada and internationally on critical thinking, brain-compatible classrooms, curriculum design, effective assessment practice, and nurturing 21st century skills in a digital world. He has authored several articles, chapters in books, and textbooks and has taught at York University and the University of British Columbia.

Cheryl Lemke 

Cheryl Lemke, an author and a consultant, specializes in public policy for K–12 learning technology, working at a variety of levels with governors, legislators, superintendents, business leaders, and teachers. Her 25 years of experience in the public sector includes service as a teacher, technology director, policy expert at a national education laboratory, and cabinet member at a state education agency. Cheryl served at the cabinet level for the Illinois State Board of Education where she administered a $60 million budget. During her tenure, she initiated and directed the development of a $40 million state technology backbone for Illinois K–12 schools and ensured the inclusion of 21st century skills in the Illinois Learning Standards. She left the public sector to serve as executive director for the Milken Exchange on Educational Technology. Cheryl was a keynote presenter at the National Education Technology Conference in Washington, DC, in June 2009, and she has presented at the state, national, and international levels. Cheryl is author of the annual “National Trends Report” and the architect of three national frameworks on educational technology and 21st century learning that are used in thousands of schools.

Will Richardson 

Will Richardson is known internationally for his work with educators and students to understand and implement instructional technologies and, more specifically, the tools of the Read/Write Web into their schools, classrooms, and communities. A former public school educator for 22 years, Will’s own Weblog (Weblogg-ed.com) is a leading resource for the creation and implementation of web 2.0 technologies on the K–12 level. He is a leading voice for school reform in the context of the fundamental changes these new technologies are bringing to all aspects of life. His critically acclaimed, best-selling book Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Tools for Classrooms, now in its third edition, is used by tens of thousands of teachers to reinvent their practice, and his presentations and workshops for audiences around the world communicate a fresh and inspiring vision of what schools can and must become. He is a national advisory board member for the George Lucas Education Foundation, a monthly columnist for District Administration Magazine, and a frequent contributor to

magazines and journals such as Educational Leadership and Edutopia. Will is a founding partner of the Connective Learning Group, which is dedicated to helping educators contextualize and implement Read/Write Web tools into their schools and classrooms. He is cofounder of Powerful Learning Practice, which provides long-term, job embedded professional development around social online networking tools to educators around the world.
